First off, Cas, while I realize it's frustrating you're having trouble stepping through the threshold of dreaming - be very thankful that you are remembering this "zone" you're stuck in. If anything, it's good practice to what I belive is going to lead you to a successful WILD.
The more practice you have on recognizing the "feeling" of balancing between awareness and dreaming, the more you'll be able to do what I think is the last step of WILD:
letting go.
WILDing can be like scaling along the side of a building on a very thin ledge. You look down, you get a bit dizzy and feel like you're about to fall (that's the dream pulling you down). So, you quickly pick your head up and grab onto a brick in the wall to keep yourself steady (that's you trying to stay "aware" so you don't fall into a non-lucid). The trick is to fall, BUT land on one of them inflatable mattresses like those stunt dudes do (that would be slipping into sleep, BUT remaining aware or lucid).
So, while you're studying the HI of SP, there will be a time when you'll have to let your awareness fall. Let go of the wall and take the plunge. The hardest part is somehow staying focused on your target. I guess the closest analogy would be like guiding yourself towards the mattress on the ground AFTER you leap and not to line yourself up to the mattress before you leap.
Make any sense?
