How do you wake up without an alarm clock?
It seems waking up to my iPod music alarm hurts recall.
Does that seem probable? Hows it done?

Alarm clocks hurt my recall as well. Its hard for me to recall during the weekday when I'm being woken up by my alarm clock, but on weekends, when I wake myself up, my recall is dramatically increased. Thats why I don't use my alarm clock anymore.
I try to use autosuggestion. Basically at night you repeat phrases such as:
"I will wake up after every dream period and remember my dreams"
In theory, after a few attempts, you should start waking up during the middle of the night. I've had but one success with this technique and it was also my first lucid dream. Ironically, I woke up about 2 minutes before the alarm clock was set to go off (I was with my friend, who wanted to use the alarm clock).
It defiantly is a working method and worth a shot at for a few nights. That is if an alarm clock is out of the picture.
Eh I guess ill try both, and try to autosuggest before 4AM or whenever my alarm is set for WBTB.
As you are falling asleep, make sure the only thought you are thinking is "I will wake up during a dream and I will remember it." If you find your mind wandering a little bit, redirect yourself and keep that thought at the front of your mind. When you wake up, just make sure your write your dream down in your journal.
Last night I did this and recalled 3 separate dreams. I went to bed at 1:00 AM and woke up at 4:20 AM; roughly three hours later and during my second REM cycle. A REM cycle comes around every 90 minutes at first and then it starts to be more common (and longer) after 8+ hours of sleep.
Funny thing is, during one of my dreams I did a reality check in which I looked at some writing to see if I was dreaming. I remember the writing being all screwed up, but I was justifying it to myself haha. Needless to say, the RC didn't work and I continued through the dream w/o any lucidity. Too bad, but I'll keep practicing...
I finnd that getting into a proper routine really helps. You will almost always get up a few minutes before the alarm rings but not notice that you are up most of the time. Its "noticing your up" that takes practice.
Just try to routine it for a few days to a week with what time you sleep, when you get up, etc... Also as seeker said, the most important thing about LD'ing is motivation. WILL IT to happen.
You can do it!!
WILL it but don't FORCE it. Just have confidence in your ability to achieve one, and one will eventually happen. Once you have your first LD, you will start to understand sort of what to expect. Before I had my first one, I didn't really know what to expect. Just have confidence and it will happen.
if you develope a system with your clock, then It wall become automatic after a while
You can buy alarm clocks that light up instead of make noise. Your brain can automatically wake you up based on the amount of light coming in through your eye lids.
I'm pretty sure it would be impossible for me....I really would love to not have to use one though.
auto suggestion worked for me once. I just said i will wake up at 7:00 to myself till i went to sleep. made sure there wasnt any distractions or anything and i woke up within 5-10 min of 7:00 :)
Dude i really dont understand how it works by me, but i just get to know at what time i have to get up, and i wake up exactly 10 minutes before, thats some freaky shit - i had that for ever...
Thanks! I also just thought that you could get one of those timers for when
you go outta town, and hook your light up to it.
heh I might try that...
Hehe worked like a charm! I just set up a lamp pointing at my face and set
the timer for 4:30AM. I wonder if it will hold up over time...
that's really interesting! I should get one of those timers, I know my parents have one. I should have thought of that before! thanks!
It's easy for me. When you're lying in bed, just look at a clock and say what time you want to wake up. Then count how many hours are from now til then. Then go to bed. It almost always works for me.
