Experimentation With Billybob001's Wild Tutorial

BillyBob101's WILD Method Experience:

I went to bed @ 9:30PM, and awoke at exactly 2:00AM. I thought it'd be a great time to try the newly discovered method for WILD. After awakening my mind for 5-10 minutes, I went back to bed and got myself comfortable. I was lying on my back with my arms at my sides as I started to count my breaths. With each inhalation, I counted up one more number. With each exhalation, I said to myself, "I'm dreaming." I also tried visualizing the number I was on, and the words: I'm dreaming.

After around 250 repetitions, I experienced sleep paralysis. My body's method to paralyze my body was not harsh at all, the feelings of my body just seemed to intensify tenfold. I felt everything being intensified, and noticed that I also felt extremely heavy. It was quite a fun ride, indeed. I kept my eyes closed, and kept counting... I knew that I'd soon be in a lucid-dream. I made my way all the way up to seven or eight-hundred repetitions, and started seeing increasingly vivid colors.

I thought that I was for sure ready to "open my dream eyes" and walk around in the dream-world. So, I opened my eyes, but it turned out that I opened my real eyes. :(

I shook my body out of sleep paralysis and felt refreshed like I would if I'd gotten a normal night of sleep.

I have a few questions for anyone who's experienced with WILD, so that maybe I can progress a little further next time:

1. Will I be able to control my breathing even in sleep paralysis? I thought, at least, that I was controlling my breath last night.

2. Will my external senses be dulled or suppressed gradually during the WILD process? For example, when I was around 500 counts, I still noticed my brother turning and tossing in his bed.

3. Will I have to force my "dream eyes" to open when I want to enter the dream-world, or will I just find myself in the dream?

4. How far did I make it?!

read my post, i followed the same tutorial and it worked.

firstly, as billybob001 says, you should wait until either:

- you find yourself out of bed.
- you feel a jolt (read my post!!)
- a unique thing that happens to you.

also, try being more tired. when i WILDed i went to sleep at 11 and woke at 4.
therefore i was farther in REM Cycles.. that might be your problem too.

my senses dont get dulled either, its part of your mind staying awake while you fall asleep. i even swallowed a lot because saliva kept accumulating at the back of my throat. as long as you dont move your limbs, its fine :)

i found myself in the dream. i just had a huge jolt. dont open your eyes until you are 110% sure you are in a dream. trust me, you will know when the time is right.

Don't worry about it - breathing is automatic, its ultimately under the control of the autonomic nervous system. Also you don't need to control your breath to WILD, but if you want you can slow it and/ or watch it (like in Vipassana meditation). BTW - During sleep paralysis, its only the big muscles like arms and legs, that are suppressed. Supposedly this is to stop you acting out your dreams and hurting yourself. None of the ANS is affected. Eyes and lips etc are also not paralysed (hence REM and sleep talking).

I got a little further last night with this WILD technique:

I went to bed at 11:30PM, and awoke at 4:45AM to start my WILD. I went to the bathroom and walked around a bit just to awaken my mind a bit. Then, I went back to bed and started counting breaths as I had in my last attempt.

Luckily, SP had hit way quicker than it had before; it only took 140 counts to reach SP this time!

I thought that this time, for sure, I'd make it into a lucid-dream state. I kept counting inhalations, and my SP deepened and deepened until I could hardly feel where my limbs even were.

Eventually, I made it all the way to 865 counts, and I realized that I felt a gentle, soft pressure on the left side of my face. It was like there was a soft pillar leaning against the left-side of my face.

Also, I experienced something I hadn't before: my eyes were struggling to stay closed... they kept blinking to try to stay closed. I thought that this was the call to open my 'dream eyes', so I opened my eyes only to realize that I was back in the waking state.

Ugh, it was 6:00AM!

What happened? :(

865 counts sounds alot!
On the one hand - I would expect results earlier than this - maybe.
Perhaps count with more conviction??? (In a casual kinda way!!!)
On the other hand - if an hour or more passed then - you were counting very slowly (1 minute to get to 14 or so) so... perhaps you drifted into a dream/asleep?

You could also try to focus on the relaxation/self-hypnosis - "as I count I am falling deeper and deeper asleep..." etc.

Maybe try a different thing to say e.g. - "I am lucid", "Am I dreaming?"

At some point - if it doesn't happen automatically (it usually seems to but perhaps not with everyone) you will need to 'step into a dream'. If you are just counting - that might be your dream - i.e. a dream of counting, even a lucid dream of counting - not what we are after!!! So you may need to actively engage in/ control the dream at a certain point - and for this, some research on DV about changing the dream scene may be useful (spinning, mirrors, doors, etc)

Have I asked this before? What is your learning type? Visual, auditory or kinesthetic? There's a link in my signature, to a post with VAK tests. The reason I ask is that I'm beginning to think that many of the LD induction techniques would be more effective if they play to the strengths of our learning modes. So if you are visual then I would suggest, visualisation WILD methods...

My own preferred methods are visual (in brief):

'Seeing with close eyes'
Relax.
Visualise your bedroom.
Visualise it more & more clearly until (after some time...) it is real (LD dream real) and you can't tell if your eyes are open or not.
Stand up!
- or, if in doubt, first change the dream scene. I would do this by mentally 'growing' grass and plants in the room... "That night in Max's room a forest grew, and grew, and grew, until his ceiling hung with vines and the walls became the world around." (from 'Where the Wild Things Are')
Then[i] stand up!

My visual counting method
I relax, then imagine I am in a small drawing room at the top of a tall thin tower in the middle of a forested valley leading down to the sea (or something like that - perhaps Da Mo's cave?).
I then sit down at my desk, where I find a large sheet of vellum, a pot of ink and a quill pen.
I begin counting by writing "1. Am I dreaming?" - then turn a page or write over the previous as it dissappears - "2. Am I dreaming?", "3. Am I dreaming?" etc until you need to recharge the quill with ink. At that point the dipping of the pen into the inkwell becomes a reality check or sorts. Of course its all a RC!

Tibetan Dream Yoga
I won't describe this one - but it works!!! Its basically mindfull relaxation - but with some twists - for example part of the visualisation is imagining thingles at various parts of your body, which I theorise encourage energy/ Chi to flow in a way beneficial to the technique (at least that what it feels like!)

i've just started doing wild and i'm glad you mentioned the swallowing thing 'cause i thought i might be fing it up.

lately i've also being trying the counting method, but i am FAR too lazy to drag myself out of bed, so my counting tends to meander alot :) - i forget which number i was at and then start from somewhere where i think i should have been and so on.
Usually as i am in my 50th count or so i feel slight relaxing waves vibrating through me like sudden cold shivers and as i get to about 150 in a period of about 5 seconds i feel extremely strong vibrations both in my body and in my mind (kind of like pings. sometimes they come alone and indicate that the body vibrations are gonna kick in any second now) + hypnogogic imagery is much more energetic and powerful and colourful.
could this be my bodies version of sp? after the vibrations i can move my body easily, its just very heavy.

Hey, this definitely helps a lot! I finished the VAK test and it said that I was VKA-Mixed (MULTIMODAL [i.e. no clear preference]).

And that counting method is very, very creative and imaginative! I predict that this method will work much better than just having consecutive numbers run by my mind's eye every few seconds.

Well I have yet to have an LD or reach SP, mainly because i'm lazy and don't like to get out of bed and don't like to count for very long. lol well this post inspires me to try this method again the right way and count to 1000 if necessary. Well I'll post my results.
