Reality check - Any process by which you check if you are dreaming. The reason these work is that they exploit natural inconsistencies of the "real world" and dreams. The proverbial "pinch me" doesn't work, because you can indeed feel pain in dreams. However, by exploiting things like the stability of dreams, reality checks are very good. For example, text and numbers change frequently in dreams. Check your watch several times, in a dream, the numbers will change each time you look at it, or change while you are looking at it.
Do any type of reality check you want. Think about your mental state. Is it dreamlike? This often does not work, as in your dream you will feel like you are awake and thus conclude that you are indeed awake. Do things like breathe through a pinched nose, put your finger through your hand, draw a neon ring on your palm, check a watch, clock, or read some text over.
In regards to its necessity, it depends on the method that you are shooting for. In a reality check method for inducing lucid dreams, of course that is what you are going to want to do. However some methods like WILD don't require this (though some people prefer to do a reality check once they get into their WILD). It's all about your preference and if it works for you.
I see that biting your finger works best when your dreaming it feels like your biting a sponge aka its not really there :yumdumdoodledum:
block ur nose, and try to breathe through it...
Jump and try to stay in the air, you know float. That's always a useful one [unless you haven't gotten down fly or floating yet].
i blocked my nose in a dream but for some reason i couldnt breathe so i continued to talk to someone through a wall

What I do is look in the mirror, and lol, I look like a woman.
I pull my finger and see if it stretches, Or I check a clock twice and make sure it's consistent with what time of day it should be. It's just a test to see if you're dreaming.
Since we're on the topic of Reality Checks, I just wanted to ask, how often do you guys do them when you're awake?
I've been really slacking off on mine lately since I've only remembered to to one once in my dreams, and that was after I had started, never worked for me after that. So, I've decided to start up again and I want to know basically how often I should do them [I try to do one every time I walk under a door frame but I got frustrated with it since I'd have to do it about ten times just to get ready for school]
