Self Hypnosis Induced Lucid Dreams (S.H.I.L.D?)

The other day I was wandering around at the library, and I came across a book on self-hypnosis. I thought it looked interesting, so I checked it out, and read it. The main technique of self hypnosis is to enter a relaxed state, and then once there, to give yourself 'suggestions'. These suggestions, like 'I do not smoke' are repeated over and over again. At this level of mind, suggestions go past the normal filters, and are taken as true - thus they happen. One of the chapters was about how insomniacs could use suggestions like 'I can sleep easily' in order to control their ability to sleep. It mentioned when you are about to fall asleep, you are at the level of relaxation critical for self-hypnosis. As I was reading that, I made a connection. One of the ways to attain lucidity is to repeat to yourself 'I will lucid dream tonight' (or something along the lines of that) over and over again as you fall asleep (during which you are deeply relaxed). This is the same as any other command given at a deep level of relaxation. Whether it is conscious or not, I believe the 'suggestion technique' for lucid dreaming is really self-hypnosis.

I wonder if you could do something like, "I can WILD easily." That would rule.

You are right, that is EXACTLY what it is. By suggestion, you are implanting the command into your subconcious, exactly the same technique used in hypnosis and self hypnosis.

It does help some to meditate as you make these suggestions to yourself. It helps get your concious mind out of the way so that it is easier to implant the suggestion.

I look at it this way, suggestion might take 1000 repititions to implant, Meditation might take 100, and self hypnosis, maybe 10.

Another thing I have found to be helpful is to implant suggestions while you are in a lucid dream. Next time you have one, spend a little time to implnt the suggestion that it will be easier next time for you to be lucid, or next time you attempt WILD, you will succeed.

suggestion and commands in LD's are something I thought of and wanted to try pretty hard, because if it works, you might just be able to help yourself out with ALOT of things.

This is exactly how I go into LD.

I meditate (tanscendal meditation) and I repeat Buddhist Mantras, and eventually I get to a state of blackness, and being one with the blackness.
Here I repeat the mantra i devised to induce LD "I will fall asleep and will lucid dream" this is reapeated as many times as possible till i fall asleep.

when i started doing LD Last year I used the mantra "I will wake up and remeber my dream after every dream" to start of and after about two weeks replace it with the Ld mantra. I really works if you are devoted to it, it realieves stress aswell.

Self-hypnosis is a cool thing, and surprisingly easy to attain in my opinion. I think that suggesting to yourself that "I will lucid dream tonight" is a brilliant idea, and I'm adding it to my list of techniques.

I think it can go a step further tho. You know how it's important to intend/expect to LD (or remember your dreams) as you fall asleep? Well, I think using self-hypnosis could be super useful to make yourself intend to LD. In other words, suggest to yourself that you will intend to LD or remember your dreams as you fall asleep. I think this may reinforce the falling-asleep-mantras of LDing or recalling.

Considering the point of lucid dreaming is for the consciousness to transcend the subconscious, this might only make it harder to lucid dream.

That is, if the point of lucid dreaming is for the conscious mind to control the subconscious. By implying and undergoeing the metality that you must ask your subconsciousness for "permission" to have a lucid dream, there would then be limitations.

Simply meditating and concentrating on trying to remember dreams will keep you consciously focused, however, self-hypnotic lucid dreaming would probably just make you wake up.. Not remember any dreams. I can imagine a small margin of possibility of a lucid dream, but I don't see a high probability of it with the concept that lucid dreams is the trascending of the consciousness over the ambient subconscious.

thats why you need to have different goals, not to "lucid dream tonight" but to "preform a reaility check when you get into a dream" so that your conscious can take over the subconscious, and have a LD

Usually just autohypnotism, though. A lot of people I meet either think it's evil or it doesn't work, so they won't hypnotize me. They're just crazy. Lots of times I've been able to get into hypnosis, but since I live with a loud family, it's hard to stay in one for very long.

I've got some good websites on hypnosis if anyone wants 'em.

So far without success
I remember the dreams, but no lucids

Actually, what self-hypnosis is trying to do is to intstall an unconscious predisposition for certain dream goals. I can consciously wish all I want that I might have better recall or notice dreamsigns or do RCs, but when I'm dreaming it is my subconscious that is running the show.

Self-hypnosis does things to weaken the strength of the subconscious hold on dreams. If I implant a subconscious desire to RC more often, then when I'm am dreaming I won't need as much conscious objectivity, just a strong core desire to RC. Once I notice I'm dreaming, I can easily take off from there.

Saying that self-hypnosis will lessen your odds of reaching a dream-related goal is like saying stretching lessens your abilities as an athelete.

Umm, maybe it's because I live under a rock, but what in the media portrays hypnotism as evil? And by what rationale could a person think hypnotism, especiallyself-hypnotism, is evil?

Cults putting people into a trance, and.. thats all I can think of.

Basically the thought that someone else has control of your mind is scary, isnt it?

Personally I dont think hypnosis is that crash hot - but as I read hypnosis.com I am definitely open to 'persuasion'...

A few weeks ago i tried trance breathing before falling a sleep.
I noticed i entered a hypnosis trance and i gave myself the suggestion to have in the morning a lucid dream.
Indeed it was so, a good one also.
The hypnotic trance was fun because i was awake and yet i was sleeping already, i call that split consciousness.
And that is always such a free experience.

Last night I tried to count on every beath I let out, and wanted to get to a 100 and from 100 count back.
Gosh, the first few tries I couldnt get past 5 before my mind wandered off. Whenever that happened I made myself start over... Seesh I started over like 398798 times, usually losing track around 20, but finally I got to 100 with a little bit of cheating... which I set as my goal when I noticed how hard it was, so i didnt count back from 100. But damn' that was hard. Heh.

Was thinking about this but, there are two things about repeating words.
1) Verbally saying the word.
2) Making a connection with the words, giving them meaning.

You can keep saying stuff and it might not have meaning, so in connection with saying it try and understand and mean it. ;)

I must admit that I'm a beeeg fan of self hypnosis, since the time I started using it (around the time this thread started :P)
If only I had more time to do it :/

I use it in about 3 ways actually.

1) I break habits with it... eg I dont bite my nails any more. However I need to do self hypnosis about once a week ATM to not have a relapse. You probably think 'so what, thats easy'... well, read my post somewhere about belief, willpower, etc... in my case this was NOT easy at all. Not for my subconscious. My most difficult habit to break ever was my nail biting ;)

2) I use it to make myself more receptive to lucid dreams.
Eg - I'm a lucid dreaming master. I notice Im dreaming really easily. I lucid dream every night.
I was actually quite impressed how well this worked for me, but it had a day or two delay. Coincidence? Maybe. But I was having about 1 LD a week. After this I had 1 LD a day for 2 weeks straight

3) If I happen to do the self hypnosis in the early hours (ie WB2B), then I use it as a means to get into a wake induced LD. I've always found WILD's to be quite difficult for me, but not if I use self hypnosis to skip the hypnagogic imagery and distractions.

After doing my self hypnosis, I use Seeker's method of imagining myself on my back on a raft, drifting in the ocean. Feeling the
waves. Eyes closed. Then after some time, I either open my eyes and look around, or have the raft beach itself and then get off of it, and look around.

This works consistently, and lucidity is high. But I find a dream induced LD to be more vivid.

Personally, I think self hypnosis ROCKS.
LDGuy has a new method he's got in progress ATM, that he reckons causes multiple LD's a night.
I'm trying it out, but just don't get enough time lately for self hypnosis. Kids out there - dont get married or have children :P

I bought a hemi-sync tape series of lucid dreaming tapes from the internet which have something like hypnotic suggestions on them in addition to subliminal suggestions intertwined in the hemi-sync sounds which I am having a fair degree of success using as they are causing me to wake up all night long in the middle of my dreams, in addition to one night actually becoming aware during and controlling my dreams. To keep from burning out my repeating cassette player I purchased some software to convert the cassette tapes to MP3 files which I can play on my computer all night long.

I liked Soths suggestion of giving oneself suggestions to perform a reality check during ones dreams. Instead of programming to have a lucid dream, it programs one on how to actually achieve a lucid dream. Great suggestion. I'm going to start trying that.

I did just 4 days ago and since it said it was supposed to take a night to work, ive had 3 lds after the night of none, so it seems to have been working so far... I think I will redo it again tonight to reinforce the subconcious implantation, hopefully it will work even better...
hmm maybe ill try your idea of RC programming instead of "I will lucid dream" instead, that makes more sense...

ya, i LOVE self hypnosis. can help you do anything. im TRYING to do a full session, but ive been interupted jsut when im about to state that im gunna have an LD... it pisses me off... :mad:

I used LDmans HILD tutorial, and once, i counted to 100 (the first time) breathing in and out.... and i reached a very deep state of hypnosis, i thought it was like, an accidental wild... and i was waiting for the dream to take shape (because i was conscious) and then i woke up gradually, and i looked at the time, expecting it to be about 4 am, but only 20 minutes had passed too bad i didnt get anything done in there... :?
