Each person is individual, so whatever works for you.
In my case, I tried the 'every hour' thing, and couldn't get that to work for me. I also guess that after some time you would get too used to the eg. watch beep. And get lax about it.
The main way I get lucid at the moment is with some dreamsigns that have come naturally to me, over time : being attacked, and getting panicky or worried.
I have managed to get MILD right, but I found my lucids were difficult to stabilize. Not the most vivid.
Best thing you want is to check often and it be something you see often in a dream. Other than that it doesn't really matter. Every hour thing works but a lot of people get kind of lazy.
Actually, RCs by a watch beep are generally ineffective. This is because it simply teaches you to do a RC when you hear the watch beep. Thus, in the dream, when you DON'T hear it... no reality check.
It's like, watch-beep RCs are questioning reality because you have to, and RCing when you experience something strange are questioning reality because you want to question reality. Much more effective.
The watch-beep technique does work, however, if you put your watch next to your bed at night. If you aren't too heavy or light a sleeper, you'll hear the beep in your dream, and voila, reality check.
Good advice here.Quote:

.
Everyone is different, find out what works for you and do that, and try to find other things later!
Eh, I just had an analog watch and looked twice at it to look for a massive change in time. Analog watches also help with dream control, but that's another topic...
analog watches work, but it's not that obvious as digital clocks.... When
you look at LCD display and see 16 digits instead of 4, you know you are
dreaming :D
I've finally bought me a digital alarm clock and put it next to monitor... Now I have best RC aviable right in front of me. Let's see if it'll work...
8) Ya i believe you should one that always works for me is the POKE technique every time you see a wall or mirror you poke it . It sounds retarded but it works because there are always mirrors and walls somwhere chances are you would do that and your hand would go through the dream wall and you would say to your self  hey my hand didnt go through the wall before i must be lucid and walla you become lucid. It worked with me except i became excited and woke up.
One thing I started is to take advantage of the following for RCs:
1. reading the paper
2. checking email
3. reading snail mail
4. microwaving stuff
Those are four things that I do at least once everyday, so they usually work their way into a dream. So if you force yourself to do at least one RC during those times, chances are that you'll rc in your dream as well and possibly attain lucidity.
I'm trying to increase the list to 10 things instead of 4, so that I'll have 10 guaranteed RCs per day (except for snail mail on sundays  ).
Hope that helps!

I think that the best most reliable RC that is efficiant while at the same time being safe enough to use in front of friends is the hold nose RC, i like it especially becuase it is based on the body and not the mind, while most RCs use the brains mistakes in the construction of the dream world the hold nose RC works simply because you cannot hold your nose in your sleep, and it is reasonably foolproof(i dont think anything short of a cold will cause it to fail if done correctly) Ive put a twist on it in the last few days by also reciting 3 words in my head when i do it, i hold my nose and say my name, the day, and where i am, that way even if i do do the RC too fast in a dream i will still reflect apon my situation and hopefully gain a LD :D
Yeah... I started a poll about this..
If I remember correctly, the results showed that the top 2 methods were
to hold your nose and breathe, question your surroundings and memory, attempting the supernatural (eg. finger in palm, flying) and look at watches.
