Hey sunflower. I had my first sucessful self-induced LD last night. And I've only been practicing LD for a week now.
Although Im not a professional, just a beginner like yourself, here are some things that helped me:
When I started practicing I could always recall atleast 1 dream a night, whether it was vivid or just a bunch of scattered notes. One thing I found that worked for me with my dream recall (found in tutorials) is to tell yourself verbally not just in your head but actually say the words, "I will have a Lucid Dream", and "I will wake up and remember my dreams" . I usually wake up about 3 times a night. Never really had problem with that.
Just think REALLY hard when you wake up try to remember anything you might of just dreamed. You also need a journal if you do not have one. Also read everything that this site has to offer.
But everyone has dream signs, but before you get to that step you got to remember your dreams. You could of had a LD and just forgot about it. Dream recall is key step 1.
Lucid dreaming remains an art rather than a science. At this point, I can only conclude that some people have a natural gift for it, and others, like myself, are virtually incapable of it without special assistance. For six months, I did all the recommended stuff. I kept a journal. I got up at 2:00 in the morning, and then went back to bed. I set my intention before going to bed. I did the reality checks during the days, and the mnemonic exercises. I even tried self-hypnosis. And I was lucky if I managed even one lucid dream a month.
At this point the ONLY thing that has given me any success is taking supplements (specifically galantamine and others recommended by Thomas Yuschak in his book Advanced Lucid Dreaming). I am not trying to advocate that approach, but there are people that will tell you that lucid dreaming is just a matter of setting an intention. For some people that obviously works. For other people, it just is not going to.
I don't know if it's brain chemistry, or what, but different methods may only work for certain people, and it pays to not waste time beyond a certain point with a method that is not working for you.
If you do a search of the various lucid dreaming forums, you'll find a ton of different techniques. It is defintely worthwhile to try them out. Just be aware that no technique can be guaranteed to work for you.
Look. LDing involves mental resolve above all else. It takes time. I got my first LD within about 2-3 weeks after beginning to practice. However, there is a DV member who recently reported their first LD after 2 YEARS of practicing. My point is to just stick with it and stay positive. Also, you should buy the book "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" by Stephen LaBerge. It's really helpful. :)
How long have you been trying for?
What techniques have you tried? Are you just hoping for a DILD or have you tried WBTB/WILD/VILD/MILD/DEILD etc....
just keep on goin....its really worth it
