I decided to try this last night, and successfully got to SP.
Instead of counting, every minute or so I would force my brain to focus till I felt sharp again.
Anyone done anything like that?

WILDing right when you lay down is waaaaayyyyyyy harder than WBTB, it takes much longer to make it to REM, if you even make it at all. I've never made it right before bed, but whatever works works.
It was the first time I have ever made it to sp without passing out. It was fun. But it wasnt exciting after that, very boring.
