its not mandatory :) you just need to be in a comfortable posistion.
You could try WILD all twisted up like a pretzel if you wanted, as long as it was comfortable for you.
;)

It's not really required but apparently being on your back helps.
If you have trouble staying awake during a WILD (as in, you unintentionally drift off before entering a dream), laying on your back is an option.
If you are too restless during a WILD, sleep in the position you most easily fall asleep in.
Some believe that laying on your back helps you remain "aware" since most people don't normally sleep on their backs, however if you have real trouble sleeping on your back.. then WILD in any position that is more comfortable for you.
I usually am on my side.
I think the lying on your back is meant to have comfort, but not enough to let you drift off easy. If you can keep your mind awake while your body is still comfortable you would probably do it faster.
I find that on my back it is easier to get the sinking feeling, which leads to the rest.
I usually WILD on my side. Laying on my back is just TOO uncomfortable most of the time.
Lying on you back is bad for your back. Lying on the side is best on the back.
Anyway I actually find whenever I wake up from a really vivid dream I've been sleeping on my side, so...yea, personally I think side would be best for the healthiest WILD.
I lay on my back until I start to snore. The snoring indicates that "my body" in a semi conscious state, but it is also distracting. Once I start to snore, I turn on my side. I think that laying on my side is my natural position for WILDing.
Another thing that goes along with laying on my back and snoring, is that I get “restless leg syndrome”, at about the same time. Laying on my side fixes it. However, they are both good indicators of my state of consciuosness.
I’ve read that Buddha dreamed/slept laying on his side.
"Lie on one side with your legs together and knees slightly bent. Let your bent arm take the weight of your torso by resting your head on your open hand. This is the posture of the sleeping Buddha, as he has been traditionally depicted at the moment of passing into nirvana (death)."

Like I'm sure many people above have said, you can WILD in any comfortable position. I WILD in the strangest ways sometimes.
I heard you have to be on your back because any other position will cut off key stimuli to your brain.
I remember hearing on a podcast that sleeping on your back makes you five times more likely to feel sleep paralysis, and this would help WILDing. I don't know the dude's source of this, but as it comes from a skeptical podcast, I'd say he did his research, and that it can't be too far from the truth.
I usually start off on my back and then roll on my side after about 15 minutes if I haven't already fallen asleep. You wanna be comfortable, but not TOO comfortable. If I lay on my stomach, I fall asleep too fast.
