Just curious to know What's the difference?
Hey DreamingGod,
I think the main difference is that of perception. With an OBE, the person experiencing it knows that they are out of their physical body and not dreaming, where as with a LD, the person knows that they are Dreaming. Opinions vary on whether or not OBEs are actually just extremely vivid Dreams, where the person is highly coherent, but just not aware that they're Dreaming - as in a False Awakening.
Arguments aside:
Lucid Dream - you're in a Dream and you know it (but don't think you're out of your body)
OBE - You're out of your body and you know it (usually somewhere in the physical world, and you are certain you're not Dreaming).
These are my ideas on it, based on what I've read and experienced. Anybody else got more input on the subject?
By strict definition, MrBlack pretty much hit it right on. A lucid dream is a dream where you know you're dreaming, while an OBE is when you separate from your body, but are still in the physical world, can see your own material body, and can also see things happening in real life, as if you were walking around awake. I'm not exactly sure if OBE implies also being able to travel to some sort of astral plane, but I think so.
There's a lot of debate however as to whether OBEs actually exist, or whether they are a form of dream or something similar, like MrBlack said.
LD = OOBE
OOBEs are what some people call the vivid kind of LDs where the dreamer's expectation causes an experience coherent with the waking world.
My LDs are always vivid so that would make me a OOBE guy uh?
But then how do you explain people knowing/hearing things while in a "LD" that really happened in real life- that they couldn't possibly have known if it wasn't an OBE? I don't know that much about OBEs, but they're a bit like NDE's right? Except, you're having them without almost dieing!
a lucid dream and a OBE are the same thing but not how you might think. I personally believe that people think there out of there body when they see themself in a dream. A real OBE can't happen! its a ridiculous idea, I'm sure many people will disagree with me on that. I've seen myself in bed while in a dream and I'm quite sure its just a DC.
This is still just opinion.
I don't think anyone truly knows. I do understand what Jules is getting at though. I have had Dreams, and LDs in particular, where information about something has been "revealed" that I couldn't possibly have known, and I've even seen the consequent results of the particular situation. And no, it wasn't just a piecing together of different pieces of information. What I learned in the Dream I couldn't possibly have extrapolated from any available information. I don't know how it is explained, but I do know that it happens. I've read that this is more common among people who LD or OBE, as is Déjà Vu apparently. Whether one is actually the other though, like I said, I don't think anyone truly knows.
Just another opinion.
Short answer to your question Jules, there isn't really a solid explanation for the "knowing/hearing things". If you look, you can find a lot of ideas out there though.
As someone who started having OBE's before I ever had a lucid dream, yet have went though various periods of not knowing if it is real or a lucid dream I can say that all of my WILD's have started out as OBE's. The difference is that you actually feel yourself floating out or seperating from your physical body, I am almost always in my room when I get out, and also I usually have to open my astral eyes in order to see, and sometimes it is difficult to do, like I have to strain to get them open, then I can fly around and feel my ceiling and walls, I haven't yet been able to go through the walls, though I started through the ceiling once. I have been able to put my hands in the walls though. It is a weird feeling. Most times I am not aware of having a body, untill I want to touch something, other times I am just as a point of awareness, I have looked at my arms and hands though when I thought of it, they were clear, I could see through them. All of this proves nothing, and I have seen things in my house that were not there when I woke up which made me think that it was just a dream, yet something tells me there is more to it then that, I now believe it is real, yet your mind is in the dream state, you can see things that are there and you can also see dream things that are not real because that is the state of mind you are in.
Some people believe you actually seperate from your body when you dream, and are connected by what is termed the silver cord, your body continues to function, yet is asleep, in regular dreaming your consciousness is also asleep, in lucid dreaming your consciousness awakes yet you continue to dream and make imaginary landscapes, etc. in OBE's your consciousness awakes and you can explore what is really there as well as other dimensions, (I haven't got there yet), as well as pretty much do what lucid dreamers do.
I have more OBE's than lucid dreams, my lucid dreams are always DILD's and I know that I am dreaming, it is usually day time im my dreams, when it is really night, I am usually, though not always somewhere other than my house, I can think to do something or make a door apear in a wall and walk through it and be in a totally different place, this hasn't yet worked during a OBE.
I have also been told information in dreams that has come true, and there was no logical explanation for it. I now beleive anything is possible.
I also a couple of days ago had an OBE where I floated to my ceiling and was pulled back into my body, my eyes were open when I returned, I watched the ceiling seem to get further away as I slowly went back into my body, I felt my astral body rejoin my body, and my physical eyes were opened, there was absolutely no break in consciousness, no shift from a dream to reality, though there usually is a jolt I have to open my eyes, not this time, and it isn't explanable as a dream because I was awake the entire time.
There are alot of people who claim that OBE's are actually projections into the astral realm, in the plane closest to the physical world.. so what you see is actually whats really going. I have yet to find out for myself wether this is true or not, but as long as you can't OBE and check it out, I don't think you should claim they are the exact same thing...
OBE = supposedly realtime
WILD = lucid dream
Here you can read all about it

Quit sure? I don't understand people like you, why don't you go and find out wether it's real or not? Oo
