How I had lots of DILDs.
A while back i was into lucid dreaming like crazy (about 5 months ago), I was WILD-ing before i went to sleep at night just for practice (none succeded), on my afternoon naps, almost whenever i wanted to sleep. This resulted in lots of DILDs, not exciting ones like the lucids induced by WBTB+WILD, but still. I have to say I didn't have a dream journal or tried anything to get DILDs. I didnt even do reality checks I just wanted to LD so badly that I was in a state of mind where I would have DILDs almost everynight. What helped me allot was that whenever i read something on these forums I was like I can do that it's easy. The downside of all this trying to WILD before bed was that i would wake up very tired and had to sleep like 13-15 hours a day.
I believe WILDing before going to sleep (and failing) keeps a part of your brain awake and when you dream you kinda feel the dreamstate and plus you have dream recall. Again, I had great dream recall without a dream journal and realized i was dreaming without RC it was just this weird feeling that i had that got me lucid.

I strongly believe on what you said about failing to WILD and how it keeps your brain more alert as you fall asleep. I've had many successful DILDs from failing a WILD. Hehehe that's why I haven't given up on WILDs yet.
