This is an important point, I agree. As an analogy, consider this: When people read, their mind sometimes wanders off of topic. At this point, people tend to remember little of the text just read.
That feeling you have when you are attending to text with full attention is what you need to maintain when WILDing. Indeed, you may need to visualise things to facilitate the induction, but do this consciously; do not let the subconscious take control--also, imagine as if you're projecting them onto your eyelids, and not the mind's eye. If you're successful, then the images shall become very real, and this is when you observe and let go. You'll feel the transition from here.
