Theoretical Method, Should Work 100% of the Time For Everyone

Hey. I just read a post over at lucidpedia about a guy who set his cellphone to play a clip of him saying "I am dreaming!" in the middle of the night at 5 minute intervals. This seems like it will work 100% of the time if you have the luxury of doing that. It works on the same principle of NovaDreamer with one MAJOR difference - in dreams, the lights are warped by your mind to be other signs, like sirens, flood lights, etc. Your brain might not pick up those signs as your cue all the time. However, if you could hear the sound (which you can in the dream), then once you hear it (it would make sense that sounds are much less distorted in dreams than lights) you will automatically realize your dreaming, because its telling you you are!

Now heres why this technique wont work for me and others, and my modifications. One, my cell phone cant play back sounds I record as an alarm (hell, i dont even know if I have a recorder). Two, if anyone in my house heres that mp3 of me saying it, they will think I'm crazy and it wont be pretty (theyre die hard christians). And finally, you might play the mp3 at the wrong time when your not in a REM cycle if you just set your phone to ring in the middle of the night. SO, here is my plan:

1)Buy wireless headphones. You can find ones from 50-100$ in stores like circuit city or ebay/amazon. Hook these up to your computer and make sure you can hear sounds from where your sleeping (in other words make sure the signal can reach). Be sure to take any cordless phones out of the room to minimize interference.

2)Create an mp3 on your PC of you saying "Im dreaming", and loop it for five minutes. There are plenty of easy and free tools that can do this, just use google. When the final tutorial comes out (after I have bought the headphones and tested it) I will recommend my favorite one.

3)Now, see what time you normally go to sleep. Say its 12, then you are going to want the sounds to play in one of your later REM cycles, six hours after you fall asleep (or 7.5 if you have the time), so you will want it to play at 6:00 AM.

4)Now your going to schedule a task telling your computer to play the sound at 6 am. Go to start, then run, and type in cmd. then you will use the command:

change the path to the full path to your mp3. This will open up the mp3 in your default mp3 player at 6 am :D

5)If you find that one time isnt enough, instead of making the mp3 longer, you can schedule more tasks, at 6:05, 6:10, etc. Fool around and find the perfect time for you.

So, if anyone has wireless speakers try this method and see if it works well, the theory seems great and i believe it should work like a charm. It seems like a better alternative to pricey things like RemDreamer and NovaDreamer, which don't work all the time in the first place, because, as I said, their cues are easily ignorable. However, sound isnt :D

One final note: Make sure you dont make the volume too high or you might actually wake yourself up. Just adjust your system volume before you go to sleep to a volume where you can hear it clearly but its not blasting - again, just fool around and you will get the perfect setting for you.

Some stupid things I realize slower people may ask :P

1)YES, you do have to leave your computer on all night. Scheduled tasks dont magically turn your PC on :(
2)yes, you have to sleep with the headphones one, not leave them by your bed and hope you hear them. When I sleep with my iPod I find the headphones are still on in the morning, so it shouldn't be too hard to keep them on. (If you have a problem, duct tape can help :P)

I think this is what they invented the i-Home for, the fact that it slowly raises volume until the max you have it set to is awesome :D I just taught myself to do a RC whenever I hear of/think of a certain song, and have that play every few hours quietly on my iHome.

I wouldn't consider any technique 100%, and especially not one like this since all sorts of people have experienced the:

DC: Hey, this is a dream!
Dreamer: It is?! Oh, reality check!
*RC fails*
Dreamer: I guess it's not a dream :(
DC: Hmm I guess not. Want to play volleyball?
Dreamer: OK!

Nah Stephen Laberge has tested this...It definetly doesn't work for everybody as the message is either not heard in the dream or you do not act on the "obvious" message

That's a good idea though man. I never thought of that - relate a song to dreaming. I'm going to try that.

I've heard that your sleeping mind does better with non-obvious messages. Like messages you can barely hear, or need to decode. I think the only way the signal will enter your dream is if it is interpreted by your sleeping mind, and integrated into the dream. Similar to how you described the Nova Dreamer's lights being integrated into the dreamscape. That is sort of the point.

The reason the nova dreamer works (for some people) is that it shows you a signal in your dream, that reminds you to question whether you are dreaming. It doesn't just flat out tell you you are dreaming. The important part of that equation, is you noticing the signal on your own, and remembering to do a reality check. That is where your logical mind wakes up. When you interpret the sign, remember what it means, and remember your intention to RC. It needs to come from yourself and your own curiosity.

But I've never tried. I've just known people who have.

Been there done that. Even just turning on the radio when there is a talk show going on, will increase your base level of awareness in sleep, which is good. It may even perk you up enough to pull out some lucids for the first nights but nothing consistent.

I recommend Winamp instead of low level cmd magic. Make some records with nothing than silence then load them up in sequence with your signal in a playlist. Or you can use ClockWise or other similar programs.

I used to interrupt sleep after about 4 hours then tape an earphone in my ear. I wanted to build a system using bedshaker but the project died from lack of technical expertise. Anyway, I would recommend 3<T<15 minutes between signals, slightly randomized in order to break down subconscious expectation.

You need to condition yourself to attempt separation immediately after you heard the signal otherwise you will be tricked into doing nothing so many ways that's not even funny.

So practice with the same signal while you are awake. When you are hit in the midst of your daily activities simply left hanging everything, including your thoughts. You can set the signals further apart if you wish so you can talk to people without being zombified in every 5 minutes.

If you practice this way for a couple of hours each day for a week you will experience great results or your money back.

ah cool, good idea :) I still thing the AT command is easier than making hours of silence, but its the same idea. the randomizing the signals is a great idea too. im gonna use the phrase "i am dreaming" a couple of times, then use a loud three-tone beeping sound which I will practice doing RC's to during the day. Of course, I needa buy those headphones first :P I hope I'm not wasting my money :D

The lulz. I have experienced something very close to this. It went something like this. From context you can gather what my dream was about.

"This flying is great practice for when I lucid dream!
Hey wait a minute, this is a dream! I'll not make the same mistake last time. I'll go land and then gather my marbles and make sure my logic is still working."
I then proceed to fail at landing and awake.

OK, on to the actual method discussed in this thread. This seems like a good way to do things. I have a possible improvement.

Make a 5-minute long mp3 that says "you are dreaming" and then silence for the rest of the time. Or, have it say some subconscious signal, like some people above mentioned. Put it on a playlist on your iPod to play 30 times or so, I don't know. I believe it's possible to have the iPod play a playlist as an alarm. I mean, my iPod mini can do it, and it's a few years old. Unfortunately, I have terrible luck with those earbuds and they never stay in my ears all night. I must find a way of fixing that. That was a tangent. The point is, you don't have to have your computer running all night and wasting power if you use an iPod.

i made a 5 minute long mp3 saying 'check your reality, you are dreaming' every minute. i will hook up some ipod speakers and set the alarm to play this song tonight on repeat and see how it goes.

How to make it play the same part again and again? Is there a software for this?:shock:

Once I had a dream that I was reading a test question on a final regarding lucid dreaming. I thought it was neat because I was actually studying lucid dreaming out of school, but it didn't occur to me that I was dreaming! Hah, I slapped myself after I realized this the next morning.
