I was just wondering since all my LDs started with that i already knew i was dreaming. I never did a reality check because i didn't need to but my LDs happened after a WBTB except one of my WILDs so i was just wondering what got me lucid?.

It's spontaneous lucidity. It can happen.
This happens to me all the time I just realise I'm dreaming and use a rc to verify or see how it fails.
It actually happens to most people, you just KNOW that you're dreaming, verifying by RC is optional.
On the other hand for more occasional LDs, a good habit for questioning your reality should be followed by a RC.
RCs are not required to become lucid but they can confirm that you are dreaming. I'm not using RCs when dreaming at all, they have no use once I'm lucid or I wouldn't be lucid by definition.
RCs are used to train yourself to frequently ask yourself if you are dreaming or not. That's why it's a good idea to do them during the day and to do them frequently. That increases the chance of becoming lucid while dreaming, because when you ask yourself out of habit in a dream, you'll most likely realize that you are dreaming. So it's: Train RCs when awake -> become lucid when dreaming.
There is one situation when an RC may be required in a dream. That is when the dream strongly resembles your waking reality and you really can't distinguish if you are dreaming or not. This often happens after a false awakening.
When I first started having LD's I never once did a RC but now when I have them it's the first thing that I always try to do, it seems even if you realize you might be dreaming the RC proves it and gains you full lucidity if you didn't already have it or were unaware of having it, the only down side to doing an RC is that sometimes it fails and then you may of thought you were dreaming but since the RC failed you you start to think you're not, so now I'm starting to try to think of a secomd quick RC check that I can do on top of that incase the first one fails.
I still suggest you do a quick RC to make it more clear because with out the RC sometimes you accept certain elements of your dream as actual reality and this could cause you do lose lucidity but with the RC you know it's a dream for sure.
Yeh i have had times when i just notice that my surroundings are off, so then i become lucid, thats pretty rare though and i usually get lucid doing Rc's.
I have a watch that beeps ever hour, and everytime it beeps I sit down and really think to see if I am dreaming or not.. and I do a bunchf of realty checks, like trying to fly, trying to shoot people with my hands, trying to walk through walls.. People look at me funny when I am not dreaming though O.o
Very little of my lucid dreams start with a reality check, I always just notice something strange.
Whan I have FA I do not do RC I just know I am dreaming from the feel of the dream. Also when I have DILDs I do not need to do RCs either because again I just know I am dreaming or what sparks me to become lucid is floating into the sky or something that I know can not possabily be real or happen in waking life.
But I wouldn't sweat it much how you became lucid. Our mind works in very strange ways. :)

ive never had to RC in a dream, i instincitvely know im dreaming just as i am about to ask myself if i am dreaming. However, my version of an RC is not in a physical context such as holding my nose or checking my hands, but mentaly questioning whether or not i was dreaming or awake.
Maybe thats my RC?

I know this is an old thread, but I'll add to it and bump it incase someone wants to talk about this again. I'm confused about reality checks.
The way it started happening to me is that all my life, anytime I look in a mirror in a dream, I can tell by the way my eyes look that I'm asleep. Also any time I look at my hands, I can tell if I'm asleep. This didn't start out as a reality check, just somethign that I noticed while dreaming. Then I realized that any time I wonder if I'm dreaming, that automatically means I am. What I mean is, if you are awake then you never wonder if you are asleep. So if you are starting to wonder if you are asleep, then you are. (Or else there are more serious problems in your mind! lol)
So then a few weeks back, a friend told me about lucid dreaming and that these are reality checks (we were talking about that movie Inception and the spinning top, I guess you are hearing that a lot from newbies) and I realized that all this time I'd been doing reality checks without knowing it. So my friend told me that this was the first step to lucid dreaming and that after doing the reality check, I could control the course of the dream. So far that has not been the case.
I've always been aware off and on when I'm dreaming. Doesn't mean I can do anything about it!
WBTB stands for wake back to bed. It where you sleep for 5-6 hours (or more), and you wake up and then go back to bed. You can just stay up for a little bit and go right back to bed or you can stay up for like an hour. The whole point is to wake up your frontal lobe, so that you have a better chance of going lucid. This is usually combined with MILD or WILD or whatever method .
WBTB, is the practice of sleeping around 4-6 hours, waking up for an hour or so, and then going back to bed. this has been proven to greatly increase your chances of having an LD.
You seem to have naturally come into LDing. Once you are aware you are dreaming you should try doing some fun things like flying or altering the dream. Have you tried this? Dream control is indeed separate from lucidity, and there are various paths to both.
You should try some indirect dream control methods:
-when i walk around this corner, there will be a beautiful girl waiting for me
-when i reach into my pocket, i will have a remote control that will let me change scenes
-when i turn around, i will be on a lovely beach
And some direct methods:
-when i wish it to happen, my friend will appear out of thin air
-there is a wall i want to go through. i will look away and then back and there will be a door
Thanks! I tried to control the dream for the first time ever and had bad luck with it. I posted elsewhere about it. I'm going to read the stuff here about dream control and then try again.
One thing I've already picked up on is that I should have tried controling what I do in the dream rather than what other people do. I spent my one attempt trying to make the people around me or the setting around me change or do something. It will probably be much easier to just change what I'm doing first and practice that way.
I will normally do a few reality checks, anyways. It helps me stabilize things.
I agree with the above. A lot of times, knowing you are dreaming is just a result of autosuggestion, and not any RC.
RCs certainly prevent you from forgetting you are dreaming.
Ive never had a lucid dream by RC. Is that weird?
All of them are spontaneous.
LDs rarely happen because of reality checks, it's usually spontaneous, sudden awareness. If one was to become lucid "by doing a reality check", they were probably already aware and the reality check just raised it to the point of lucidity.
I had a lucid dream by doing a reality check - I pinched my nose, I found that I couldn't breath and so concluded that I wasn't dreaming - doh! (a lucid dream of about 2 seconds!)
Yeah, I usually just "notice" something strange and think "Oh. That cat shouldn't be flying around the house. This is a dream."
I've only actually gotten two lucids by Reality Check. My reality checks basically function as a "habit" to sink into my dreams, but awareness is key.
in my opinion , you dont need reality checks for knowing its a dream.
Lucid dreaming is all about awareness.
When ur in a dream and ur aware enough , u ll get notice ur in a dream.
In my dreams the atmosphere is way different , like higher gravity.
But since its a dream , its not exhausting.But its noticable.
