Am I getting close?
I have kept a dream journal for close to 4 weeks now. I have remembered at least one dream almost every night, and the average is now a little over 2. I'm happy about that. Last night, near the end of my dream, I realized I was dreaming, but it was fading already and too late to do anything, so I gave up. There was a red mutant in my dream, and he suggested I do a DEILD. I tried, and almost fell asleep, but then my dog licked me and woke me up. Am I making progress towards lucid dreaming?

Yes, you are really close! Keep at whatever routine you are following. Next time you become lucid and the dream starts to fade, start spinning on the spot, arms out to your side. DON'T GIVE UP! You said it was too late to do anything; it probably wasn't. You'll get it next time you try :)
Good luck, and happy dreaming!

Yep, you are definitely progressing towards lucid dreaming. A good idea for you would be to have a simple, but precise plan of what you are going to do next time you realise you are dreaming. That will give you something to focus on which helps keep you in the dream. It is lethal to just stand there thinking "wow I'm dreaming!". You'll wake up super fast that way. Interacting with the dream environment is a very helpful way to prevent waking up. An example would be to immediately perform a simple RC such as looking at your hand or the nose pinch test and then find some solid object to put your arm through. Practise these actions during the day so that you are used to doing them and they come naturally to you.
Every night before I go to sleep I run through my current lucid goals and refresh them in my head. I like to have at least 3 goals to do when next lucid. I find if I stand still and think for too long while lucid I'm likely to wake up. I need to keep focused on the dreamscape. It's quite a cool feeling when you achieve a lucid goal! I achieved one just last night when I put my hand into a mirror for the first time :)

I actually have had lucid dreams before, I was just working towards inducing them. Because I didn't know how to ground them, all but one have faded within 30 seconds, and I think the longest one was around 3 minutes.
