Yeah I figured it'd be an intense trance rather than just relaxing, but am not sure how to induce it yet. Marijuana induced trance gets me a good idea of what you mean. Allthough it sounds more like the Mushroom induced trance. Like overcome by a trance that leaves no room for distractive thoughts, because it is so strong and paradoxal, and makes one an observer of Reality with no thoughts or opinions about it. Something I call "Just being".
Allthough last time I came quite close using the Breath Counting method, I have yet to succeed inducing this trance state of awareness and maintaining it untill I fall asleep. Practice makes perfect? Or would you rather say that an understanding of this trance and how to induce it would be required?
The only way I have managed to WILD is 1)being extremely tired or 2) waking up after about 6 hours of sleep and trying.
2) I'm going to start with this first because I think it is the harder of the two for a few reasons. At this point you are not completely in your right mind to actually follow through with WILDing instead of just falling asleep because you are too tired. I can do this sometimes around 6am if I go to bed around midnight. However, if your family or the light of day is a problem to your concentration I would recommend changing things around. Also, after sleeping for a while and then trying I feel that you can be too rested vs. too tired to actually slip back into REM. That is why I recommend personally...
1) By being really tired late at night you are alone, everything is silent, and your mind is slipping into the right mindset for a WILD. I usually jsut take advantage of this after a couple of days with reduced amounts of sleep otherwise I MILD with Stephen LaBerge's method. You can immediately slip into REM sleep if you are tired enough. But anyway you know when you are really tired and lay down and kinda slip into some weird thoughts almost falling into a dream and catch yourself and wake up? Well this is what I use to enter in WILDs and have had about 6 WILDs consecutively over about an hour and a half period.
First, relax your body and imagine it sinking away into your bed which shouldn't take long. I usually ignore the full onset of sleep paralysis because once waking up from a failed WILD because my eyes opened I just do it again and get back in. Also, it can be easy to fall asleep or in my case impossible to fall asleep once I click something on to wait for SP.
Then let yourself fall asleep almost, and catch yourself before you do. You want to be somewhere in between falling asleep and being mildly concious. Where you are so disoriented that random things are happening for random reasons but you know you are there. Like having movie-like hypnogogic imagery. When you catch yourself from falling asleep you can easily wake up so if you gain consciousness to your body, don't move because you are probably in sleep paralysis or close enough. DO NOT think to hard about it either or you will reverse the whole process of "drifting off." Some people will think they are back in their real body but be in a dream but I just know when i'm there.
Next, when you are "drifted off," quickly while your consciousness is disoriented use your hypnogogic imagery or your implanted thought you had when starting to fall asleep (what I do) and "feel" everything. Imagine coming to life in the dream. Your new body is your dream body. DO NOT THINK TOO HARD ABOUT THIS. Just drift into it letting your mind do whatever it wants in the mire. Just start to feel everything in the whirl and blurr and "fall" into place or into your body from 3rd person or whatever suits you. All of the sudden everything should be extremely clear and your thought should not be repeated over and over in your head like you might have before. You should just live it. The thing I like about WILDs is that everytime I do them I have 100% lucid dreams, not semi-lucids or anything.
Overall, the object is to disorient your consciousness enough where it loses awareness of your body, and then gain awareness of a dream body while your real body is in sleep paralysis. You can use any method to do this that suits you but that is what a WILD is. When you do it the name fits it because it is "wild."
I've noticed how much more Empty my mind is and how much closer my body to SP to begin with when I'm REALLy tired.
Last night I only slept for about 2 hours. All day my body has been very sedated-feeling and my mind going a nice, calm pace. This calmness allows me to concentrate much easier. A natural, Sleep deprivation induced-trance for body and mind, or "sleepyness"
I can imagine how being that tired makes it all 70% easier to WILD.
I'm going to experiment more with Sleep Deprivation, which is easy given the fact I am suffering my usual wintertime Insomnia episode, in order to fine tune my level of wakefullness/sleepyness to be optimal for WILDing. I'll try 3 hours of sleep one night and then attempt WILD early the next evening. Then 4 hours of sleep one night.."....." .etc
SKA, I think sleep deprivation makes it easier to WILD b/c of REM deprivation. Once you're REM depraved, you go into REM rebound the next day which basically means that you spend more time in REM sleep than you would in your average night b/c your body's trying to compensate for the missed REM sleep. This is a very good technique that Im about to experiment with again. I did this one time for three days and was smacked in the face with four (back-to-back-to-back-to-back) vivid LDs followed by two vivid non-LDs. I was amazed how well this worked so I had planned to do it again but have been too lazy to do so. But since I've been experiencing a lot of insomnia lately, Im thinking that I might as well go for it.
Wolfe, you are exactly right. Sleep deprivation makes it easier to gain lucidity because your REM cycles have been suppressed. Your body tries to compensate for the loss by cramming in lots of REM. As we know REM is the period of the sleep cycle when the majority of dreams are held in. So overall, if you nicely lack on the REM cycle and not be an idiot and try and overdue it with no sleep for two nights, you should have much REM stage and not too much to make you pass out.
Another technique I have used is alcohol. Alcohol suppresses the REM cycle as well causing the body to try and overcompensate the following morning (if you are sober, and not having a hangover). By lightly drinking before bed and trying a lucid technique early morning I have a very high success rate.
Both of these techniques (mild sleep deprivation, and light drinking in the evening) have yielded me many lucid dreams especially amongst dry spells. For anyone that is having trouble but knows what a lucid feels like I recommend trying slight sleep deprivation (shave a couple hours off of the two nights before you try) to try and stimulate a lucid. If you are going to try drinking that is up to you, but I recommend about 1-2 beers about 45 minutes before bed (depending on your tolerance for alcohol) for lucids during the night/soon after you fall asleep. About 1/3 to 2/3 what you can take (of the type beer/liquor that does not give you hangover) for mid-late morning lucids. Personally if I drink I try a combination of MILD and WILD after I wake up in the morning to try and drink a glass of water.
O my god. I went out last saturday and didn't sleep that night, but stayed downtown. Then I was awake all day and couldn't sleep untill about 4 o clock that folowing night.
Slept untill 11:00 o clock and I feel pretty wierd.
Wintertime Insomnia time.
Think I'll sleep pretty tight tonight though and I wonder what dreaming will be like in this state.
It would be great to have more guidance on this. I'm very familair with the movie like HI. It seem to readily get to this stage. The problem is, I get lost in it. Whilst its there it readily takes up my attention. Then I snap out of it, and realise it was HI. And so on.....
How do we get a grip of WILDing at this stage?
