Yesterday I did this and got my first lucid dream.
Step 1: Peripheral vision. Try to look at everything around you at the same time.
Step 2: Choose something around you.
Step 3: Look at all the details of what you chose.
Step 4: Choose a detail and look at the details of the detail.
When you don't see any more details you can start over from step 1 and choose something else.
