      Discomfort and False Awakening

      I've suffered from terrifying FA and SP at various times of my life. I've always tried to avoid it and I've come to know the kind of circumstances/conditions that make it more likely to occur. Now that I'm understanding more about LD I'm wondering if I should actively seek out these circumstances/conditions in my pursuit of LD.

      Here's the circumstances that have triggered FA for me in the past:

      Having an afternoon nap (The nap was just a normal nap, not featuring SP or FA). The FA would occur early evening, between 10pm and 1am usually.

      Sleeping on a hard floor. At a party once, there were so many people there I ended up sleeping on the floor.

      When a bright light is on. (My gf was still up and about while I was trying to sleep.)

      I'm not sure about the afternoon napping (I'm guessing this alters the REM times, but I'm not sure) but with the other two a key component was discomfort. So, would actively seeking a mild source of discomfort (I'm thinking of something like a clothes peg on one finger, or literally sleeping on the floor when attempting WILD after WBTB) make a FA and thus a LD more likely to occur?

      Yes, stuff like that does work. I actually hear people suggest to sleep in different positions a lot. Like sleeping on your back, if you always sleep on your side, and its suppose to make it more difficult to fall asleep.

      Anything that makes it more difficult to fall asleep, such as discomfort, makes it easier to LD. The idea is that whatever is keeping you up, keeps you at a higher level of consciousness, and thus makes you more aware once you do fall asleep.

      The downside however, is that obviously its harder to fall asleep. If you do fall asleep however, it does help. So you might as well give it a try. If it keeps you awake for an hour, then its to much. If your the type of person that can sleep any where, then it might work very well.

      In my experience with FAs they are a sign of mental stress and inability to sleep properly. They ocour at very near waking up REM stages and mine are very real and exacting to the real thing. I only get FAs when I try too hard to LD and stress the mind.
