Yes, stuff like that does work. I actually hear people suggest to sleep in different positions a lot. Like sleeping on your back, if you always sleep on your side, and its suppose to make it more difficult to fall asleep.
Anything that makes it more difficult to fall asleep, such as discomfort, makes it easier to LD. The idea is that whatever is keeping you up, keeps you at a higher level of consciousness, and thus makes you more aware once you do fall asleep.
The downside however, is that obviously its harder to fall asleep. If you do fall asleep however, it does help. So you might as well give it a try. If it keeps you awake for an hour, then its to much. If your the type of person that can sleep any where, then it might work very well.
