Tolerance?
Just as the body creates a tolerance for things like drugs and the sort, is it possible that the body builds up a tolerance to LDing attempts like MILDing and/or dream recall? I know I'm not the only one who goes for a long time on a great recall streak and then eventually fades into zero recall, the so called "dry spell". It is said that if you take a break from LDing that your dry spell should end, and I know this often works well for me. Is it possible that this is because the brain is just so used to what you are doing that it fails to register on a subconscious level as important?
Also, on a note taking more place in fact rather than theory, can you build up a tolerance for Apple Juice? Or, more specifically, the ingredients that are helpful as lucid aids? Usually if I've been drinking AJ every night and my recall is still bad, I'll stop for two or three nights and when I use it again it works beautifully.

I'm not sure. I've always thought of lding as a skill that you improve in over time, unless of course you're a natural, which i'm not :(. The more you ld, the better you should get at it, and the more frequently you should be able to do it. But if that's the case, where do dry spells come from? The only thing that i can think of to explain dry spells is stress. The stress of life seems to have a huge impact on lding ability and dream recall. I think lding just takes a certain amount of focus. Sometimes real life requires more focus than other times. Since we have to focus on real life, that takes it away from lding, which results in a dry spell or a drop in lding frequency and dream recall. This is just my opinion though. I would like to see what a more experienced DV member has to say.

there are some great threads here on how your mind makes ld's happen - or not -
what you believe WILL happen is a huge factor
so a dry spell is self reinforcing - as is a string of successes.
i think mind control (also MILDing) is good no matter what else you do, because you put your faith in process first, not what happened last night or this week
i've had ld's come out of nowhere and then i am always glad i kept on trying no matter what
as for lucid aids, yes i think your mind builds tolerances. that's my two cents.
i still take vitamin b's but i think it's good for me anyway.

I really don't think that we can develop a 'tolerance' to our attempts at lucid dreaming because a tolerance is something physical and this is something mental. I think that dry spells are just something that happens, we get comfortable with our techniques, we get lazy or we don't find it as exciting so our focus changes and we have a hard times with the dreams. The mind is also extremely powerful with suggestion, if you think to yourself that it's been a while since your last dry spell and you start to dread it then it will happen. Just like when you have a song stuck in your head, the more you try and get rid of it the louder it plays.
As for your apple juice question I think it's possible to build up a tolerance. If you use it for stimulating effects it's just like coffee. The more you use it the more you need to reach the same effect. Why must our bodies be so adapting?:roll:
