      Really odd meditation experience!

Today I was trying to meditate in my room and it was going really well when all of a sudden this really odd thought popped into my mind. I saw the hamburger helper dude, ya know the Glove guy on TV. This thought kind of broke my train of concentration so I turned on the TV and guess what commercial is coming on....Hamburger Helper Guy.

This made me think of the fact that as humans we only use 10% of our brains so maybe for a few seconds I was able to use a little extra of my brain.

I've experienced this with astral projection twice but I thought it was just coincidence even though I have heard of people seeing the future like this but I've never heard of it happening in meditation and I've been meditating for a while and I've never had this happen before. What do You guys think?

I'm pretty sure the 10% theory is bogus-- last I heard, anyway. Perhaps its only 10% that we use for conscious thought or something, but we most likely utilize most of our brain all the time.

We use a large proportion of our brain, but only 10-20% at a time, I think.

That's really awesome though yesac, little things like that are really trippy!

I'm going to start paying a lot more attention to non-lucid dreams and during meditation now but yea it was very cool.I just wish it could have been something a little more substantial ya know.

I'm also not sure on the 10% of our brain thing i mean let's think about it. You use different parts of your brain for different things such as sight taste memory etc etc you have a complete nervous system you use the hypothalamus for homeostasis etc etc so tbh all those things are simple things and im sure that is more than 10% already.
Another thing is why would your brain develop and the human race evolve to have such a large brain to only use 10% of it when awake. Maybe it's true that we only use 10% of our brain, but one time the Earth was flat, so ill stick to beleiving in me making more efficient use of my brain for now.

This reminds me of an experience I had a little over a year ago. I was in the backyard sitting in a lawn chair halfway meditating/relaxing and listening to the breeze. Thoughts were floating in and out of my head as I was relaxing with my eyes closed, but all of a sudden I had this REALLY strong thought of Molly (my roomie's Dog), flash into my head holding a tennis ball. It had a "white" aura around it I cant explain it. It was unlike the other passive thoughts I had been having. It hit me like, "BAM!" Almost as soon as I had it Molly started barking (she was in the backyard) and freaking out as if something was wrong. She started running around the backyard in erratic patterns only to disappear about a minute later into the house.

She came back out a few moments later with a ball in her mouth. I simply watched the event unfold and made no gesture to influence her until she came back out with the ball. Astonished, I called her over to me and threw it for her, reflecting on what the hell just happened to me.

      So I believe you entirely.

aren't these things similar to small instances where we know that the telephone/door bell is about to ring, maybe a little more evolved.

Yeah, it's the nature of the one consciousness, thought is so so very powerful, and because on one level you're connected to everything, you have the capacity to be aware of other consciousness around you too, like the dog thing, the dog picked up on that thought and im guessing because it was especially powerful for whatever reason she went nuts. Once I was lying down on my bed looking up out of the window just relaxing and thinking about the world and philosophy and stuff, when suddenly a really "rushed" thought entered my head, it was like, 'bird fly head!' not really words but more of a concept, rushed into my mind like that. A split second later a bird flew past my field of vision which I was looking at, outside.

Time is most definitely an illusion too, lol. I've had countless dreams of the future, nearly everyday now.

I think its true that we are using a very small percentage of our brains, and that theres so so so much more to unlock. But I think there are limits like..., could I experience 'God's view', ubiquitous knowing of everything and feeling of everything that has occured, is occuring and is yet to occur in the universe? That would probably kill me.. I'd say, yes, there are limits to our brains, but to soul.. no. I have a feeling that's what we'll experience after our souls fly on.

Wikipedia is of a different opinion, but even though that is probably a myth meditation does have significant effects on brain activity.
