Accidental telepathy?

I know that this isn't under the catagory of lucid dreams, but I'm not sure where to go with my problem without being called insane.

I believe that I've inherited my father's "talent" to hear the thoughts of others. It was extremely frequent when I was a child, as both of my parents will confirm that I commonly replied to their thoughts as if they'd said them out loud. Since this accidental telepathy turned out to be a huge problem for my dad in his early 20's until he figured out how to silence it, I was discouraged from using this ability, and it eventually went away. ( or so I thought ).

However, in the recent years, it's been returning. It began with me frequently asking people what they said when I heard them mutter something, with me being told that they hadn't said anything at all. It's progressed to where I can hear certain people thinking very clearly. I think perhaps some people think louder than others?

The point of this post is that I don't want this ability, and would like advice on how to get rid of it. I feel as if I'm invading the most fundimental aspects of human privacy by listening to the thoughts of others, and I want to turn it off. Although I've asked my father for advice on silencing this numerous times, none of his suggestions have helped at all. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this, and do they know a cure? :|

He's very smart, although a bit strange. His suggestions have been useless.

Do you just hear everybody's or the person you're talking to or what? If it just blurps out random things you should try to somehow get in control of it. I don't know much anything about this so I guess I don't have anything to say.

I'm seventeen. I'm positive it works, I've even passed tests that I knew nothing about using it. The problem is that I don't want it. I don't think that it's morally right for me to be hearing the thoughts of others. It's like reading someone's diary, but a lot worse.

To answer Queen's question- I can't choose who I hear. It happens when I'm near someone, like within talking distance. Usually I just hear the person muttering, but it's hard to make out words. However, people who are especially strong-willed, smart, or loud I can generally hear very well.

if you really can read minds you should earn yourself a million dollars http://www.randi.org/research/ the james and randi foundation is offering a million dollars to whoever can show they have paranormal abilities ect. you could retire at 18 :wink:

No- I'm afraid that if I bring this problem to a doctor, I'll be considered insane. I want to be a preschool teacher, so I can't risk being written up as legally insane.

I don't think a doctor will be able to solve your problem.

Instead, go see a hypnotist, they should be able to help. Or you could try something like self-hypnosis.

I don't think a hypnotist would say ANYTHING about your condition.

Just my thoughts.

I would suggest (if your willing to try) to research and acquire some medication that may suppress your condition. I would research the types of medication that people take in order to suppress multiple personalities (or something in that area) and then try to obtain the prescribed medication on the Black Market.

If you decide to go that route, I would suggest maybe talking to Merck (a DV member) who is somewhat knowledgeable on the aforementioned suggestion.

i dunno.. i wouldnt want to mess around with medication...

maybe something homeopathic, but i dunno...

Although most people would want an ability like yours I can see how it could bother you not being able to turn it off. The hypnotist suggestion seems plausible to me I think their supposed to have confidentiality with thier patient. Maybe look into it as a possible solution. I'm a skeptic at heart when it comes to most paranormal things but my dad told me how he met a telepath before (he dated her for a short time) and he would have no reason to make something like that up so I'm open-minded to the idea. The impression I got from him was this girl probably could not turn it off ether but managed to cope with it. I hope you can find a way to turn it off, learn to control it, or that you can find a way to live with it comfortably.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice, especially about the hypnosis. That never occured to me, but it sounds like something that I'll be looking into.

If anyone has any other ideas in case hypnosis doesn't work, I'm listening.

Ya well you shouldn't take advantage of anyone then if u feel guilty about hearing other, you should try and help them but not directly, and I'm not sure if anyone agrees with me with this but I whouldn't go around telling your friends if you have any, etiher they won't belive, freak out at you reading there thoughs or maybe a bit of both, and it's like going into a bank it okay to go in as long as you don't rob it, but agian don't listen to me I'm don't know anything about nothing

So you said it isn't everyone you can hear but how often do you hear people? Not a day goes by where you don't hear someone else's thoughts?

It sounds to me like your condition is similar to schizophrenia. You are hearing mumblings or voices and it is driving you crazy...easily a form of schizophrenia.

I recommend trying any of these natural remedies for schizophrenia and/or psychosis and anxiety:

St. John's Wort
Ginko Biloba
Ginseng

You can purchase any of those in a drug store or a store like Walmart. They help to clear mental functions and help you think clearly, and to put your mind at ease. I think if you try those, especially in combination, you will notice it going away.

But I do suggest for the interest of science and further understanding of this little-understood and unproven condition, that you apply to be tested by the James Randi foundation, so they can see this phenomena first-hand. You can refuse an offer of money of course, but it would sure help in advancing science. But anyway, you can try out those herbal supplements I suggested.

I can't hear everyone clearly, but I can hear the people who are thinking loudly- especially angry or upset people. It averages about five times a day when I'm at home, significantly more if I'm at school, work, or somewhere similarly crowded.

What I'm experiencing is definitely not a form of schizophrenia. I've tested it many, many times. As a waitress, I see tons of customers every day, and I can always hear what the louder thinkers are going to order beforehand.

The supplements you mentioned don't in any way cure schizophrenia. There is currently no cure for schizophrenia. The only way to improve is with the combination of psychotherapy and drug therapy, usually with use of neuroleptic drugs, though I think there are some newer drugs that don't have the normal long term side effects of other neuroleptics(tardive diskinesia and akathisia).

Also Quitch, I don't think you have schizophrenia. But this is just what I have gathered from what I have read and I'm not a psychiatrist. I honestly don't know how you would go about trying to make these things you hear stop. I suppose you would have to try different methods of thinking to maybe try to focus your mind away from the thoughts you hear from other people. I personally am a little skeptical, but if people can have shared dreams I suppose a lot is possible so I guess I'll be open minded. Anyway, I wish I could help you more but that's all I got. I hope you find a way to solve this problem.

As one of the people suggested, try going to psipog.net and learn their shielding techniques.

You could also try to use your gift to help people, this way it won't seem like a burden to you and more like an actual gift.

The only way to make that stop that I could find involved burning you on a stake. But I'd much rather you join my team of super villains. So far it's just me and a guy who can light his farts on fire, but we're still pretty bad ass!

But in all seriousness, pay attention to how you have your awareness focused on these people when you hear their thoughts. You may notice that you latch onto them, so to speak, with your awareness in a way you can avoid doing in the future. Really the way to make it stop is learning how to make it happen whenever you want.

Happens to me from time to time, a cure? Didn't consider it a disease.

yea dont go to a doctor ! they will say you have bi-polar and ruin your life.

No experience in the field, but it sounds like you compare this to hearing. It is possible to block out things that you can hear, right? You just kinda gloss over outside sounds, like when you are concentrating hard on something. Maybe telepathy works the same way, but takes practice(note that my method will require you to use telepathy to learn to stop it)

Find a friend that is a loud thinker. Come up with some cover excuse to go somewhere with them, somewhere with a crowd of people. See if you can keep yourself focused on the thoughts of your friend, and not on the others in the crowd. Hopefully you can learn to only hear the things you want to - and then choose to hear nothing!

If all else fails, it could be a useful tool as a teacher.

i try to keep an open mind about things and have long since learned that there are many things in this world that are stranger than most people would believe could exist. however, I have a hard time believing that what you're experiencing is actually telepathy in the way you're leading us to assume it is. I'm not saying that what you're experiencing isn't real... just that i'm skeptical that it's really what you're making it out to be. Everyone gives off energies, and I'm sure its possible for the subconscious mind to be able to detect specific feelings of someone and be able to put those specific feelings and the current scenario into words. There are a lot of things the subconscious mind can do that just seem crazy sometimes. But actually hearing exactly what someone is thinking... sounds a bit hollywood. Either you're starting to show signs of schitzophrenia, in which case I would probably see someone about that. (and if your father experiences these same things... i dont know... studies have shown that schitzophrenia show strong signs of hereditary cause) Or you're more in touch with the abilities of your subconscious mind. Abilities that everyone has, but not everyone knows how to use. If that's the case, I wouldn't worry about it or feel like I was invading someone's privacy. If you really don't like it and can't learn to ignore it, maybe you should see a therapist?

No offence, but even though you may not want this ability, think about it. What if by getting rid of this ability you are cutting a future race of humans who inherently have this ability right out of the gene pool? Any inherent psychic talent is not something to be squandered.

Consider it.

EDIT: Btw, the correct term for your ability is 'empathy,' not telepathy. It's different. Your ability is not telepathy (active communication between minds) it's empathy (ability to sense others moods and thoughts without trying).

EDIT EDIT: Actually I may be wrong on that, I'm no psychic-ability-termage expert. Look it up to be sure. :tongue:

Cool ability, how do you do it? Do you hear their exact thoughts to the letter, or do you hear something similar? Do you hear their thoughts verbalized in their voice or in yours or in some neutral voice? Can you always do it, or does it happen once in a while? Does it happen with everyone, or only with certain people you are close with it?

It´s all in your head. There is no connection between your brains and the brains of other people. You are just thinking things, and cuz of some reason you hear your thoughs. When you know, what people are gonna order, well: you are a good guesser.

Just know this: It is no "telepathy". But it is something inside your head.

I've known what people have said before they've said it, I guess I am just a good guesser!!

Yeah indeed, a lot of people claim it's all in your head, you can't read other peoples thoughts because it's scientifically impossible. But they forget the fact that it's also still scientifically impossible to read your own thoughts. Meaning, science has no clue yet how we do it.

Feel free to try and explain how you read your own thoughts... I'm all ears.

I would like to say that no one can tell you the absoute truth in this matter. Only you, through your experience, can tell. Also, don't let anyone tell you you're crazy or otherwise silly through a message board. What do they know?

I have an extremely similar....ability. It can be very disconcerting at times, but I find an easy trick is to just focus your complete attention elsewhere for a time, until they fade into the background again. Or, simply demand that they get behind a "door" in your mind, until such time as you are willing to speak or deal with them. In your mind, you are in control, regardless of groupthink or the group unconscious, whichever your prefer to call it.

You are not schizophrenic. That is a poorly understood condition in people with even poorer methods of treatment and has a very negative connotation. DO NOT FOCUS ON THAT WORD. Ever. Rather, hear when you want to, send when you want to, and have absolute faith in yourself. And most of all, don;t try to talk to anyone about it if you already know they're not going to understand or theyre going to call you crazy. You're wasting your time and hurting yourpublic image in the meantime....you don't need the hassle trying to convince those who can't or won't understand.

But fighting this....ability of yours is only going to hurt you, I think. Also, don't use it for self-gratification....whatever powers that be exist in this universe mete out quick and...underhanded punishment for those that abuse their gifts.

well learn how to block it in some ocassions. Because I'd like an ability like this, it's very usefull , specially when you want to help a dear friend that has problems comunicating, I'd recomened you to tap into feeling people's emotions and to some extent feelings to know if they're fooling themselves.

I don't believe this at all, but presuming that it's true, you're extremely selfish to try to shut this out. There are so many ways that you could progress the study of Science through this, you could save humanity.
Maybe you don't want it, but giving it up would be the biggest mistake of all time.

i had this problem for a while. the only way out of it is to cloud your own mind with a million thoughts (and keep it that way) just make sure ur always thinking something and u wont hear anyone else's thoughts anymore. (and some people do think louder than others). u gotta make ur thought louder than everyone else's. oh u might wanna see if u can communicate with your mind (speak in ur mind to someone and see if they hear you). ive only been able to do that a few times.

Well, lots of people have the ability to "Tune Out" someone who is talking to them. Like during class, you can tune out a teacher, or if you're getting yelled out, tune out your parents. Just try to train yourself to only listen to people who are directly talking to you. If you could learn to control it better, I'm sure it wouldn't bother you nearly as much.

Yikes! Since when is it okay to suggest psychiatric disorders on the internet? And St. Johnswort is a mild antidepressant, good for people with mild depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder. Ginkgo Biloba is good for tinnitus and for keeping older people like me mentally clearer, because it's a natural blood thinner, and as such should not ever be taken with prescription blood thinners. Ginseng is used to increase energy. None of these have anything to do with schizophrenia. Please, never take herbs recommended by anyone, including me, without doing your own research first! I do not know of any herbs that help schizophrenia... and I have a 36 year old son with drug-induced schizophrenia as part of his substance abuse problems, so if there were herbs to help, I'd likely to have encountered them by now.

I do not believe the original poster is schizophrenic! I just hadn't posted sooner because I also don't believe she's going to have any success turning it off! Once psi open, they open spontaneously. They are there for a reason. The trick is to discover the reason! I can suggest reading anything about psychic Edgar Cayce, or reading _The Psychic Pathway_ by Sonia Choquette. I found them very helpful. Along with prayer for inner guidance on how to use these abilities.

There are a lot of different theories about how and why psi abilities exist. Scientists that are strict self-titled "rationalists" or "critical thinkers" will not believe in any of this until they can get a computer read-out that says it's okay and it works. That's not likely to happen anytime soon.

I might also say you shouldn't really try to tune it out. You can learn to have that psi-conversation and still complete tasks and speak to people. It's sort of like reading between the lines of existence. More people than I thought can do this sort of thing. It seems to me that it started when I was a kid, rehearsing convertsations and then later just seemed to happen in my head of its own accord. I thought it was just the usual mouse on the wheel, spinning spinning spinning - which, as a Buddhist, I was seeking to quiet. As I found peace and quiet in my mind, I then discovered there was a whole new level to conversation and interaction with other people that many of them don't know about but many know more than they let on. It's very difficult to tell the difference and extremely difficult to speak out loud about...people get mixed up in semantics and when you start tossing out words associated with so-called "pseudo-science," you will lose many people. Trust me, I've been going through this very hardcore for at least a year. I can hear very many people and have become mildly clairvoyant, I think. Where the lines are drawn, I can't tell.

You can't save humanity - don't give yourself up to scientists or the government. All that you can and should do with this ability is let it happen, allow it to advise you on proper courses of action and speech, keep your thoughts to yourself if you can (or do what I do and think them so fast most can't keep up) or figure out if the person is a left or right brained thinker [watch out for ambihemispherical ((???)) thinkers!] and then think to yourself in the opposite mode, if you can. There is a difference between verbal and visual communication. Animals, for instance, think much better in images and sensations, obviously. Try it out on your dog or cat. Send pictures when you're giving commands or requesting their presence. They're very good at it.

Well, I believe we do it all the time, though it's located in the subconscious, it seems it's over flowed into your everyday thing.

Try to forget about it, you'll go crazy.. I've had a few friends go crazy from this. :P Be careful, our brain is a million and a half different things firing and trusting each other, if you mess one up, it can really turn your world upside down, seeing how we live completely in our head.

I believe we have an energy cloud of thought floating above us, that we kind of exchange with and between, without knowing it.. I like thinking of it that way anyways.

get yourself on medications i take abilify and seroquel before i used to hear shit all the time. exactly as you describe it. but i just declared it hearing voices so i dont argue with my doctors. i didnt hear voices, i heard people talking when they were around me. could have been their thoughts could of been a lot of things. but what i take took my mind off what was being said so the things i heard would just drift away.

oh i was diagnosed as bipolar with mild paranoid schizofrenia a long time ago(pot smoking makes me paranoid). now its nothing when on meds.

Well, if you are convinced you have an ability, an ability that is so overwhelming and consistent, that you want to get rid of it, then it should be pretty much a walk in the park to prove it to others.

Considering the stakes of 1 Million, it's hardly going to be that hard work to prove something, if it's true is it?

Then you can invest the money into finding ways to rid yourself of the issue.
Or, perhaps by the time you've become world famous, and every magazine, newspaper, tv show etc. etc. wants to pay you huge amounts to interview the first ever GENUINE proven psychic... you could just live on your own private island, relax drinking cocktails in your giant pool... and be far away enough from everyone that the thoughts no longer matter.

Even though this is an old post and Quitch probably doesnt frequent these forums any longer, I would still like to post my input for the consideration of the herd.

My brother in law has the same "ability" however it is a small part of his paranormal experience. I have also experienced this from time to time however my experience is centered more around dreams at this point (that is why i joined this forum). I have been able to expand my abilities in the paranormal through meditation and lucid dreaming; it is my view that these practices enhance and discipline your conscious mind to interact with and intuit the subconscious, your own and the collective unconscious.
Having voices randomly popping into your head showing others thoughts or intentions can be frustrating since so much enjoyment in life is due to the immense pleasure we derive from experiencing surprise and "the moment". Hearing these thoughts seems to tear away at our fundamental experience and personally i fear what others would do or say if they knew i was "listening in" so to speak.

I understand how knowing more than the majority of people can feel unnerving. However I mentioned my brother in law at the beginning of my post to offer his perspective as well, that is if you are still reading these posts.

A side note: There is no such thing as privacy, that is just a creation of the human ego in an attempt to preserve individuality which consequently doesnt exist either. Your subconscious has tapped into the energy which our brains all emit and your conscious mind is listening. This is my explanation, definitely not scientific but it makes sense to me. If you except that explanation then there is no reason to fear or object to your ability. Perhaps if you embrace it then you might be able to harness and direct your energy. Guided meditation to limit your receptivity might also work. Anyways, good luck to you and all us 'gifted' people. Living in a society of the blind can be a struggle, but shit, someones gotta do it!! lol

OK, I know this thread was started in 2005, but I'm going to respond anyway.
If I had this ability, whether or not I wanted the million dollars, I would take the challenge for the purpose of advancing science. If you could prove telepathy real, you'd completely change the way people view the world.
If I didn't want the million dollars (I probably would take it, but if I didn't) I would donate it to some charity or organization.

Hmm... and interesting thread. I've often been wondering what if someone could read my thoughts. I have come to the conclusion that if someone has that ability, the one with the ability has also the wisdom to use it right. Of course there are ways to shield thoughts, the easiest is simply not to think them. If you know that someone is reading your thoughts, you can also think of a wall or a barrier. That is what they will encounter: a barrier.
