So I'm reading a book about OBEs

and I read that some of these inner signals are associated with the initial phases of an OBE. I've had 3 of them occur in the past which are

      hearing your name called out
This happened to me a long time ago I think and it woke me up. I wasn't sure if it was a real person though but I thought it was strange

Footsteps or other sounds of a person's presence
I recently moved within the last few months and in my apartment I live alone but I thought someone was there.

Any noise out of the norm
I heard music and I think I might have begun to have an OBE but then I think it turned into a dream in which I tried to change the lyrics in a song...

There are more phases in the book but I thought I'd just share the experiences I had.

Those sounds or hallucinations are what you may or may not have when going OBE or LD. I would not wait for them though. I have had OBEs without any HH, and LDs with all kinds of different HH or none at all.

Those 3 things sound like something you'd experience in an altered state, whether the state is achieved through drugs, meditation, or some other means--naturally I would have to agree that those things would precede or be present with an OBE given that OBEs occur during altered states. An OBE is merely one "symptom" or manifestation of being in an altered state. Hallucinations, both auditory and visual, delusions, unusual thought processes/patterns, logic "loops", new ideas, spontaneous creativity, etc. are all able to be experienced while in an altered state. At least some level of dissociation is also common when experiencing an altered state of consciousness. Depending on the level of dissociation, you may have little enough just to feel like you're on the outside looking in at yourself and that your actions are not totally your own, or you could have it strong enough to feel completely disconnected from your body and seem to be above yourself or existing on another plane entirely (here most people would probably call it the astral plane or something, but it's really up for interpretation).

If you look at the effects of dissociative, deliriant, and/or psychedelic hallucinogenic drugs, you will find that what you described are pretty common experiences. Deliriant drugs especially cause the specific hallucinations you pointed out, and dissociatives have been known to cause OBEs on their own.

What are deliriant drugs and dissociative drugs? I don't do psychedelic drugs but I do take a few meds for mental health reasons.

Thanks gab. I don't know what HH stands for. What does it stand for?

great book. i love to listen to this guy. you can tell he's just totally passionate about OOBE and he explains it so well. Buhlman is definitely my favorite. as far as auditory hallucinations, myself i haven't experienced this to any great degree (yet). you'll also read about sleep paralysis (experienced this a LOT as a kid and teenager) but not for years, I'm 32 now. for me the only big sign as far as sensations go is vibrations and every time they come on there is no doubt that i'm about to exit body. everybody is unique though and experiences are going to vary a lot so don't get discouraged if you don't experience some of the signs he points out.

Drugs like Benadryl and Dramamine are deliriants in high doses. They make you crazy for a few hours and you can't tell the difference between your hallucinations and reality, so you're basically schizophrenic. Dissociatives are drugs like ketamine and DXM.

Thanks Woodstock. I'm pretty sure I don't take any of those. Unless they are in Trazadone, Abilify and Busbar...
