Meditate in the lucid dream

Hello dreamers,

The reason i join is this forum, is mainly to talk about meditation in the lucid dream state, to experience a connection with your inner self beyond reason.
Does any one here experienced the feeling of intense joy, a so powerful and extreme sensation of happiness and inner peace, that you can take with you to the wake world? For some time i am try to improve this technique, i am still try to perfect it, because in this state of your true inner self, the mind try to distract you from your objective, it means that many times being lucid is not enough, you need to be extreme focus in your objectives, other times the noises from the outside world, like birds singing on your backyard, or the rain or a car passing on the street is enough to distract you, and you may also wake up prematurely once enter in this state of meditation on the dream world itself.
But i have had a so powerful sense of inner peace, that nothing in the world in that moment could affect, is so powerful and wonderful that there is no world to express it.

Does any one ever try the same, of experience this same feeling of extreme peace and happiness in your heart and mind? If so how does that influence your life's?

I think i am a step closer to illumination.

My opinion is that the distractions of the outside world, as well as the inner distractions of unpleasant thoughts, are as much an expression of the true inner self as the meditative experience.

I also think that belief in illumination as an achievable goal, along with the pursuit of it through forced mental quiet, is a significant cause of distorted and destructive experience in other areas of life.

With those rather large qualifications, I agree meditative experience like what you describe is the most interesting part of dreaming, and that its has a positive impact on life.

I may have similar LD'ing goals, with my occasional transcendental dives into my Self (that actually means something very non-kitschy to me) being the most similar to what you're talking about, I think. Though my focus during these special times is more about solitude and peace, I have experienced profound joy a few times; it really can't be avoided!

Also, though I've never considered these experiences the result of meditation (in waking life I can't hold my mind still for more than a few seconds, so meditation and I never got along well), I think that the precursor to these dives -- bathing my self in as perfect a sense of nothingness as I can manage -- is very much like meditation.

What have these experiences added to my waking life? I guess an inner peace, or more likely a calm of distance -- the noises and distractions that once plagued my life don't seem to matter as much as they once did.

That was all pretty vague, I know, but I wanted to post something to let you know that there are kindred spirits drifting around this place (Shadowofwind included, of course!). If the potential for clarity taps me later, I'll post again.

Yes i experienced inner self in my dreams many times, after meditating in waking life and perfecting it, it went into my dream state and i can basically get lots of higher self experiences in dreams currently and in the past few years that also led to discovering ones past life from a previous life before this one.
I sometimes wish i can get similar epic positive dreams again or repeatedly because that's how great it is.

i have never heard of this technique before this morning.. the strange part of it is that this was next on my list of things to do when i became lucid. its been about 20 hours since i had this idea.

What exactly is the technique you guys are talking about?

This meditative joy during an LD is a state of mind, or a condition of consciousness, and not a technique, I think. In other words, there are techniques to precipitate or enable meditation, and then there is the result, which can be, for instance, that feeling of intense joy the OP suggested.

Again, there was no technique noted in the OP; just its result. Though there are certainly many many techniques to encourage or enhance good meditation, meditation is not a technique ... indeed, it can be done without any technique at all; the same goes for LD'ing, BTW.

This may sound nit-picky, but I think it's actually quite important: The word "technique" is thrown about so much on these forums that readers (and now very often posters) have come to see the various techniques as the overall goals, rather than the states of mind, like the resultant LD's or condition of joy mentioned in the OP, that ought to be the actual goal.

This is not semantics; the OP mentioned a very high-end and presumably desirable state of mind brought on by (I now only assume) the combination of LD'ing and meditation, each of which are states of consciousness, and not techniques.

If I'm wrong, Novadream, and you were discussing an actual technique that was omitted from your OP, then please forgive .. but also it would be great then if you could let us know what this technique was that brought about a condition of joyful meditation within your dream.

Advance apologies for my being a bit of a curmudgeon; I guess I have a little tick about the eclipse of conscious states by technique on these forums, with technique often completely obscuring that which we all are truly seeking.

Though MILD is indeed a technique,* it has little or nothing to do with meditation, beyond using meditation during pre-sleep MILD prep. So I'm not quite sure what that statement means; was there more to it?




* WILD and DILD are not techniques, BTW; they're events that somehow became incorrectly, and sadly universally, considered techniques over the years of forum chat.

Not everyone can meditate in a dream lucid state. js.

According to Stephen LaBerge, the guy who invented the term (along with DILD and WILD), and for that matter the DV wiki, MILD stands for "Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams," and is centered around memory exercises with little reference to, or call for, meditation. I suppose you can call something Meditated Induced Lucid Dream if you want, but, though it is an interesting concept, about all it would share with MILD as originally defined is the acronym.

I can't tell you what I thought was wrong with your statement because I had no idea what "about meditating in a dream, like MILD" even meant -- which is why I sincerely asked for clarification. I promise I was not attacking or being snide, though I can see how you might have thought so, given our disparity on what MILD stands for.

And yes indeed, not everyone can meditate in a LD; it is a fairly advanced activity. If everyone could, then I doubt a thread like this would matter.

You don't need to be still to meditate. Ever heard of walking meditation?

Hello Dreamers,

Sorry i have forget this topic, even this forum, when i place this topic i was not even expect any one to reply, so i will reveal my theory, that it goes beyond sleep and dream.
First of all sorry for my English ability. I will discuss what for me is a sleep state and a dream state, before i go any further.

Scientist defend the theory that we sleep to recover our physical body and mind. What i totally disagree, maybe sleep must have some part of regenerating the cells, but is not for rest at all, because if it was, it means once you do an intense physic exercise you will fall asleep imidiately, what you don't. You slow down your heart rate, and you ingest liquids and food to recover what you lost, you don't sleep, the body never stops, if it does you die, and when you dream your brain is very active. So sleep for me goes beyond resting, and don't have nothing to do with rest at all, is a way our conscious mind communicate and express itself, so we sleep because the mind have the need to enter in a deep state of consciousnesses, and our dreams are confused images of an conscious mind try to express itself to communicate with the rest of the body. Is a need the mind have, a ability we lost but don't forget, is imprinted into our genetic code.

So for me there are states of awareness, and no awareness at all, a suppressed mental condition that express itself without order or control (normal every day sleep and dream).

Now i will enter into my theory, and what my intense study of Lucid dreaming, Dream Yoga, Hermetic, esoteric and alchemy reveal to me.
First of all what is sleep? We learn to call it sleep, because is what our society teach us, but does sleep shouldn't have a different name? In my opinion yes it should, it should be called "Meditation" for me sleep is the only real meditation, and the only way of enlightenment and deep states of consciousness or Nirvana itself, the rebirth or enter into paradise, only possible during lifetime and not physical death. But this is another realm, and i don't want go this road.

For me meditation is sleep nothing else, what we call meditation on occidental culture, is a pre-meditation state, a relaxation of mind and body, only! Is like a warm up before a race, a spiritual race this time, or a practice for a deeper understanding.

1º the body and mind need to be relaxed, (pre-meditation state).
2º we need to learn how to remember our dreams
3º gain the lucid ability to dream
4º have total control of the dream state, manipulate the dream world, and dream matter at will, only limit is imagination
5º overcome the dream and karmic images of the dream itself, enter a state were there is no dream no more or reflection of karmic seeds, or uncontrolled chaos. (All karmic debts need to be payed)
6º learn the state of natural light, and dream with only light, this should be the only image the conscious mind should project into the mind
7º be one with the light, be the light itself, feel the light, be the All in All, connect your conscious with your superconcious, your divine essence your soul, gain enlightenment. The microcosms and the macrocosms,

This is my theory and in my practice, i don't reach this level, i'm in the state of understanding the deeper meditation state and the dream world mind itself, or learn how to connect with my super conscious.

i finally did it.. after like a month of having it in the back of my mind i finally actually remembered to meditate while i became lucid. i remember i became lucid in some bedroom in a dream. the first thing that came to mind was to sit down and meditate. so sat down, relaxed, and closed my eyes. i remember the blackness of closing my eyes in a dream feeling strange. i remember feeling pretty good and happy that i could finally do this. i felt like a part of me was completed or fell back into alignment. then i just changed dreams and lost lucidity lol. :3

It take me about one month as well, after i have place the seed in my mind. I have 2 meditation dreams in the same night, the 2º was not so intense was not totally meditation, but a total sense of joy. And in the 2 attempts i wake up once i start meditate. All my further attempts have result in failure after that.

I'm not experienced in meditation, but i tried tonight the simplest technique and it helped me stabilize the dream.
I was lucid dreaming and, all of a sudden, the environment became to fade, and all was grey. Suddenly, i crossed my legs while hovering in the air, hands on the knees and became to breath slowly. An image of a tree became to flash. I'm hovering in circles. Then, in front of me appeared a drawing of a figure meditating inside a circle with symbols. Then, disappeared and the image of the tree became vivid. The dream was stabilized.

Excellent, so i'm not alone in this technique. Can you describe what technique you use to stabilize your dream?
I have failed all my further attempts to meditate in Lucid Dreaming after my last successful experience. After that even become lucid have been a big problem for me. But i have experienced exactly the same you do, i also hovering on the air, cross my legs and start meditate, but this experience was not so profound like the first two times i did it.
What you describe is very interesting. Do you know the meaning of those symbols? Do you know what the message represent? The mystics tell that the inner God communicate with you trough symbols and images, and that those are to been understood only by those ho get the message. Since is interconnected with your subconscious.

At the moment i am study this subjects more deeply, i become a meditation practitioner, i start study Buddhism and Dream Yoga in particular, Esoteric and Metaphysical subjects, and i am training my mind to overcome my biggest fear, i feel this is the first step to enlightenment, is overcome our own fears, realize they are just a production of your mind, and that you must be above your mind, since the mind is just a tool.

I have found great knowledge in a deep spiritual level, in the lectures of Manly Palmer Hall. Everyone should ear them, they should made available to everyone, in order that we all may understand our purpose on the master plan.

The technique i used is very simple. Just crossed my legs, hands on the knees and breath slowly. But here's the thing. I have to keep my eyes open. If i close them, all is lost.
On this dream, it took only 10-15 seconds for the dream to stabilize. I don't know the meaning of the imagery. Unfortunately i didn't have the time to see what the symbols were. The image was on for 1 second only. But i guess it could mean that i'm on the right track, that i should learn and try more of meditation.
This was the 2nd succesfull attempt. The first one, i assumed the position and asked the dream to take me whererever it wants. And it took me around the scenario i was in.
Apart from meditation, i use the rubbing of the hands and the focusing on a object a lot to stabilize the dream.

Thank you for sharing, one person on DV mentioned 'giving in' to the dream and let it take you wherever it wants. Dreamhighlander has gotten the hang of this i think.

I've had one experience to share, in which a non-lucid dream was invaded by an external source. What this source is is not very important. It triggered some lucidity and drove me around in a taxi. In this rush of lucid awareness i was still doubting being in a dream or reality. I took my chances, stepped out of the vehicle and started meditating in lotus position in the middle of the road. But i was so absorbed in just meditating. Symbols formed around my body, Actually. They where Chakra points. All of them in position of where the mystics tell us they are. I simply floated up into the clouds and felt pretty great. The dream ended. Feelings from dreams Always have an effect on my waking day. So i felt very peaceful on that day.

I'd love to explore more of this. From what i have heared, Dannon Oneironaut mentions exploring each individual chakra as if each chakra is a world/dimension. From his words, the Akashic records are accessed with the Throat chakra (For example). I have derived from my own experience that from the heart chakra you can explore the emotional plane. In my experience, i have felt extremely strong sensations in my heart. So strong even, that i feared heart-attack. There is no danger though, because i suppose it is entirely non-physical. The world i entered was one of extreme high frequency, telepathy and intense emotions. The joy i felt was literally out of this world.

A word of advice, never let the things around you influence the mind in a negative way. For instance, if you happen to experience nightmarish Visuals around you. simply tap into your own being, and meditate in peace.

Calling upon the clear light has been helpful for me as well. If you happen to believe in angels, i've heared Michael and even Jesus is a powerful protector in dreams. Other sources mention immense power in oneself and don't need protecting angels. But i suspect since jesus is the son of god. He is a powerful helper in dreams. Again, from what i've heared, the presence of an angel is scary for any negativite entity and flee upon the sight of seeing an angel.

There is much to be explored in lucid dreams. I completely agree, the mind is not on shut-down when sleeping. The mind is simply in another state, one which has terrotiry unexplored and completely unknown for many.

I have in my dream house a Meditation Room, and I meditate in my dreams frequently, or I used to. Falling asleep in a dream is also very fascinating. nova, thanks for reminding me about the beauty of such an inner peace acquired from meditating in dreams.

I recently was able to meditate within a lucid dream. It was an interesting experience. It went as follows:

There is a guy Charlie Morley who is becoming more prominent in the lding community that had a talk at TEDx. You can find it on youtube. He has done extensive research into western and eastern techniques of lucid dreaming. According to him, a Buddhist dream yoga practitioner said that one lucid dream of meditation is worth a week of a retreat. Coming from someone who practices meditation in dreams and in waking life on a regular basis, that seems like quite a powerful statement.

My first experience was amazing and I am sure I have not even scratched the surface. In the future, I certainly plan to meditate in lds.

Sometimes I think that I don't know what meditation really is :hrm:.

For me meditation is a state of mind, where only consciousness remains. No sensory input. No thoughts. I'm without weight, without thoughts, floating in nothingness... I only am. There is no need, no want, no love, no hate, no anger, no... nothing. So dream as such is not existent since you don't see and don't feel anything outside of your self, your consciousness.

Walking meditation... you have sensory input. You can't have even singular concentration...(concentration on one thing). Yet I know what you are talking about. It happened to me many times. Even when I was running and driving bicycle... I wouldn't clasify it as meditation, but some lesser type of concentration.

Also it is hard to think about sitting during meditation. When I don't feel body, nor have sensory input, how would I control balance of sitting body? Even by singular concentration on one thought I don't have sensory input... even if there is light shining on me I don't see it. I don't hear, I don't feel surrounding. My muscles are completely relaxed. So only position for meditation and singular concentration remains resting on bed...

Meditation, according to wikipedia is; training the mind or inducing a specific mode of consciousness. Whether you do that by contemplation, disassociation or focus. These are all methods to train the mind.

Now, when your in a dream. That's when you can do other stuff with meditation that simply doesn't work while awake.

@psionik, while awake you can try to disassociate yourself from your body.
While in a dream, these is no body. Any body you have is simply an illussion. In this dream you can imagine removing yourself from these constraints. Buddhists talk about oneness. We can try becoming one with our entire dream environment and it would probably work easily.

We can do energy work in dreams, another form of meditation. Since we are in such an imaginative state in lucid dreams we can do visualization and energy circulation to the max. Sitting on lotus position is just an archetype for meditating. In dreams, there are no boundaries.

OK... Well I had other criteria. It doesn't matter I think.
Only, then it seems that I meditate through my normal day nearly constantly, and it seems to me silly. I used to name as meditation only that state of being when I close all sensory input , when thoughts stop to stillness and only pure consciousness remains. And that is not so simple as it seems... but simpler than OBE, for me.

In normal dream probably not as much... I think I'm less meditative then in normal life. Mind seems to be constantly in flux. But lucid dreams are then meditation through and through. OBE even more so. Again, it seems to me silly. I thought about meditation as something special, something I couldn't reach so easily. I can describe OBE as constant deep concentration on being here and now and relaxed, detached, but focused consciousness. In about half of my OBE I don't have body. It is like when I want to touch something I either feel it without body parts, or I materialize automatically part I need. It doesn't exist till my focus creates it when need arises. And there were a few OBEs, where I had point like body or small fire ball body with full spherical vision...

I'm not sure whether Buddhists are describing oneness in dream. Buddhists are trying to go out of imagination (is that right???) and what other is a dream?

The term meditation covers a variety of experiences. The basic foundation of meditation of any kind is inward focus.

Many higher level meditation practices are specifically meant to connect one with their body. There are also ways to dissociate. Either way, the focus is always inward. It is possible to use sensory input to assist with that focus. Zen meditation is known for its ability to concentrate on a single point. The candle flame is a popular physical object to use to focus. That is because you can allow your senses to rest on a physical object while your mind is free to focus inwardly. The other end of the spectrum is allowing ones self to drift into the ocean of endless consciousness. This is usually done with closed eyes and takes one to a place of pure consciousness. You can go to that place with or without sensory input. That is because the entirety of creation is based upon consciousness. Once you reach a certain level, sensory input or no, you will be fully aware of that consciousness and fully in tune with your Self.

In that state which I mentioned sooner, I'm fully aware of my self, at least I feel it so... Without that state, not yet. It will take time... maybe I will never reach it without "my" meditative state.

I have to recommend this. Last night, this helped me a lot to stabilize the dream.
I had kinda a WILD where i entered in the dream and it was dark. I knew i was in front of my window but i was seeing pitch black and then all grey. I asked for light and clarity but nothing happened. I was afraid that i would wake up. So i thought that maybe my dream was not fully created and decided to give it time. So, what did i do? I put myself into a meditation position (lotus position), looked at my window and waited. As the seconds went by, i saw buildings start to form, little lights lit on the apartments and then the scenary was created. Then, the dream took me outside my house and to space.

Meditating in the dream is good for we to calm down if we are afraid of waking up or don't know what will happen next. We then stand still and wait. Interesting things will happen.
The funny thing is that, when i medidate, i don't sit on the floor. I'm always standing up and i cross my legs in the air, always hovering. This releases me from any contact to the floor and makes my dream taking me wherever it wants.

What you speak of reminds me of the fourth and final stage of 'tibetan dream yoga', where you lose all attachment to the dream world and exist in a state of 'clear light'. I think it's supposed to parallel attaining a similar state in the waking world, completely and truly free from attachment to the dream around us. Seeing the world without weaving our own reality over it.

I try this all the time, and it is blissful when I can somewhat experience it, but I always seem to get pulled back.

Yeah... Try to clean your mind more thoroughly before going to this state of mind, because when feelings start to concentrate into thoughts, the pure being only vanishes.

Oh man, I think you hit the nail on the head. One of the biggest problems that I encounter too is this overwhelming fear of death when I reach a certain point. It's like I need to be absolutely ready to die to go further. Ready for the world that I once knew and have grown used to, to never return.

Well- experiments and experience :) Since I do OBE, I lost fear of death... I fear of process of dying... It could be very uncomfortable. Painful... I saw that.
But when I'm closing normal sensors of body, when I'm loosing connections to this world, there is no fear. There is balance of mind. Peacefullness. I never wanted to return from that state. Even if I have things to do in this physical world. I believe, if there is nothing more to do here, body could die.
You don't need to be ready to die. You have to be indifferent about living or not living. To be in balance(of mind) means something like to be indifferent... Even if you care about something. It's little hard to describe the feeling. To let things go of their own way. Now, it would sound contradictory, but even in that state is possible to affect something. Only it is different process... Something like let things do your way... at the same time to let them go of their way... If you use the right "wish(for lack of better word)" things will happen.

I have heard a couple people mention how meditating during lucid dreams can be an awesome experience, and I've wanted to try it. I have frequently lucid dreamed naturally my whole life, but for the past while I haven't been much, for some reason. Recently, I've wanted to start doing it again, and with that desire I've began lucid dreaming a bit more frequently, and the frequency seems to keep increasing.

I haven't gotten as much as I could out of lucid dreaming, or meditated during them, because, to be honest with you, as soon as I get lucid I just start looking for hot girls to have sex with. lmao. I don't know, it just seems like the obvious thing to do. Like, as soon as I realize I'm dreaming, that's what I start doing. Lol. Not always, but most of the time.

But earlier today I took a nap, and I became lucid. This time, after becoming lucid, I decided to relax into the experience. I often simply act on impulse once becoming lucid, and that's why I go for sex. So I decided to just relax for a bit, and settle into knowing that I was dreaming. After that, the idea of meditating occured to me. I sat down, and started meditating. WOW! It was an amazing, and incredible, experience. I sat, and closed my eyes, and almost instantly my sense of having a body went away. From there, I felt like I was in a vortex. I was chaotically and rapidly spinning around, in a good way. Sometimes I would settle and I would feel like I was laying down, like when I had the sense of a body, it could be in different positions, not necessarily the one I was "really" in. A couple other awesome things happened too. There was music playing in my head. It was very beautiful and amazing music. It wasn't music from the real world, but it was beautifully composed, and even had amazing lyrics and everything. This brought about an ecstatic bliss. At another point, I felt something like a spirit enter into me. It spoke to me, in a divine and beautiful sounding voice. I seem to remember that the way in which it/he spoke to me resembled english, but it wasn't completely english. I couldn't exactly make out what it/he was saying, but it sounded beautiful and I felt like it was probably important, and I was getting a lot from it deep down.

So yea, that was an amazing experience, and I definitely want to do more experimentation with it. I would definitely recommend it!

Wow. Excelent experience. Congratulations. In my lucid dream meditations, i never close my eyes because i'm afraid of the dream fading (it has happened before). But i will try again.
Funny enough, today i meditated also in the dream. The dream had me flying over a street, showing me buildings and putting be near a person that was talking about my work.
