      playing in the hypnogogic state

so for the past 5-6 months or so i've been on a steady grind for attaining both lucidity in dreams, and also attempting OBE's. while attempting the induction of OBE's, i will often catch myself doing some strange things in the hypnogogic state. such as half-subconsciously holding conversations with people, seeing my arm through closed eyes, viewing both my room and outside with my eyes closed, and waking up with the intense feeling of being thrown back into my body. also some common things such as, feeling of vibrating, tingling, visuals, ears ringing extremely loud, and mild body convulsions.

basically i was just wondering what if any, out of the ordinary things have happened to people in this state. now i know saying "out of the ordinary" is kind of counter-intuitive when it comes to this kind of stuff but... i think most of you will get what i'm saying. for instance vibrating for me, would seem like a common thing.. and being able to see my hand as energy through a pillow and my closed eyes would be a little less common.

      thank you

Everyone has different experience so nothing can be deemed normal or regular. For instance I got to this state last night. I heard a mans voice but it was more radio/electronic than human. He said LEAVE, LEAVE, and he screamed FIRE. but after I just fell asleep. It wasn't a dream because I was funny aware.

I often see wonderful visuals that will disappear if I LOOK at them. That is one way I am able to tell it is still HI and not a full dream. For example if I stay passive I can notice that intense blue waves like the surface of a lake have formed. I am in a passive non focused (diffuse viewing) state. But, if I think to clearly and try to focus on it, then it fades.

wow thats awesome.. almost the same thing happened to me but i couldnt understand the first time. and yea i understand thats why i said "now i know saying "out of the ordinary" is kind of counter-intuitive when it comes to this kind of stuff but..." i understand.

basically i think we all have a grasp on some of the more common stuff that goes on in this state. i was just curious what some peoples most interesting experience wielded.

and savason thats cool =] i love the imagery and i can agree with you for sure on the passive viewing idea. i have this white dot or star that i see when i close my eyes some of the times. usually when i try to see it. but anyway i'll use that "star" as a reference point and stare at it passively. often times before i know it i'm seeing awesome patterns, strange geometry that involves vortex type shapes.. bunch of stuff. i really enjoy it.

I only recently started to be more aware of the 'between' state. When you already dreaming, but you still aware, and you have not entered LD yet.

Today, first time, I consciously lifted up my dream arms and looked at them, while still laying on my sofa WILDing. They were beautiful, black shiny swirling and moving fog, with different shades of black.

Few days ago I was able to enter LD when I watched a little animal walking on the carpet next to my sofa and I decided to pet him. My arm had to stretch so I can reach him. And one other time entered LD when I reached out to feel some papers I saw nearby. I enjoy this 'between' state.

I love the 'in-between' state. Infact, that's what made me want to WILD in the first place! I love when I start hearing stuff especially when it is something out of this world, it's awesome to be fully aware of it and at the same time know its not real.. I don't known, something about HI just draws me in, it also fuels some of my art, if I see something cool I will memorize it and draw it up

The other day, while still lying in bed and not fully awake, I felt that I was moving my right arm, but I doubted that I was physically moving at all. Then I opened my eyes, or at least, felt like I opened my eyes, while continuing to move my arm in front of my face. My room, bed, and position seemed normal, but the arm I felt that I was moving was completely invisible, because I wasn't physically moving anything.
This was a new experience for me that I thought was pretty cool. Although I did have a similar experience once when I felt I opened my eyes in bed and the arm I was moving looked like a staticy sort of ghost arm.

I can't be certain if I actually, physically opened my eyes or if that was just part of the dream/hallucination.

i had a wonderful experience the other night. it took me about an hour to let my body fall completely asleep. i focused on the same point i always to and tried to clear my thoughts.. using a self hypnotic breathing technique i was able to induce amazing visuals.. at first the small speck or "star"( as i like to call it) was stable and didnt move. i always use this as sort of a focus point during meditation. then after a while i noticed more and more of them enter my vision. they were like little static specks of energy moving at an extremely fast rate in all directions. after about 30 seconds of watching this i noticed the outline of what looked to be someone sitting down in the lotus position. the small "star" i use as a focus point was right at the center of the four-head of the outline. that was the only light inside of the outline. it was larger and brighter then all the rest. the outline and the one light inside of the outline were all suspended in what looked like a sea of of every changing energy. i felt a wave of ecstasy flow through me and woke up with a smile on my face.

Usually inbetween 3-4 AM for me, that's generally my WILD Time so, that's when I have those experiences. Never tried with an after noon nap but it could work, for sure.

I WILD exclusively in the morning. If I happen to wake up at 5:30 - 6am and I feel like it, I stay up for about an hour and go back to sleep. Other times, I get up at my normal waking time 7am - 9am, stay up for 1-2 hrs and take a nap.

Either way, when you do this, try not to wake yourself up too much. I get breakfast, check my email, but I know, I'm going back to sleep and keep that on mind.

If you going only for sensations, you may have some luck before sleep. But if you don't want to be disappointed, do it after at least 4.5 hrs of sleep.

I had one of the strongest sensations, but not HH before going to sleep. But I was doing some breathing excercises and I suspect, there were other factors at play, since I was not able to duplicate the experience since. But when I WILD in the morning, I get strong sensations and HH 6 times out of 10.

You do need WBTB. Your mind needs to be awake enough so you fall asleep immediately into a unconsious sleep, but sleepy enough, so you fall asleep fast enough.

I notice sometimes that I hear the voices and stuff and have "mini dreams" when i am falling asleep at night, but i know the REM cycles dont start till you have slept for a few hours. Is this normal?

We do dream even outside of REM. And if you are sleep deprived, or to the contrary, you woke up from a sleep just a few hours ago, you may be going into REM directly. Have you tried entering those mini dreams?

No, Whenever this happens I am either trying to remain aware, or just drifting off, and when I realize I am seeing things it always jolts me back into reality. I think this is the main reason I have trouble WILDing.
On a side note, I also have these when going to bed for the night. Not after a few hours of not sleeping but the whole day.

I had HH of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs having a rap battle before I saw the Youtube video....

It's nice to read how others use their HIs, sometimes, I'm like duh, okay, now what?

On a side note, I also have these when going to bed for the night. Not after a few hours of not sleeping but the whole day.
Personally, I prefer to HI as I'm going to bed for the night as that's the best chance for me to sit undisturbed for a period of time, but after a small amount of sleep seems to help with HIs as well.

I notice sometimes that I hear the voices and stuff and have "mini dreams" when i am falling asleep at night
I usually take that as a sign that I'm starting to get into the state that I'm looking for, that cusp of wake and sleep.

I may try to deep breath and relax if I'm too "awake/amped/hyper"(for lack of better term), but generally I alternate between listening in or focusing in, usually I'll listen for what it may sound like dream fragments....like a radio on a weak station, anyway, I'll move my focus around till I can get a clearer signal so to speak, then I start to focus in on the dream-like imagery. If I'm struggling or coming up dry, I'll just try another night. I like to use the states to explore my subconscious as well as learn about how my mind functions.

So for example, if I crudely sum it up, I found it highly effective in treating early childhood trauma....as some (HI)work took weeks or months to full accomplish, where I would locate a memory or all the better, in the midst of having a flashback at night, then, rather than replay the memory, I changed it. Although the past is unchanged, it really had a profound effect on my psyche. I actually stumbled across this by accident during a rough night where my sister had called earlier in the day asking about an early memory, for some reason she had to know the amount of blood spilled(my parents tried to kill each other and my older sister had to mop it up). That night was rough, but life changing. So in general, for a while at first especially, my HIs revolved around seeing myself as a kid or infant, family members, and a friend;...sounds of screaming, crying, gunshots, furniture breaking, doors slamming, etc.; occasionally I could actually feel the actions which jolted be awake just from the surprise of it. I just found it really interesting, and a cool tool for learning.(Plus more effective than years of therapy )

I'd say the coolest thing that occurred during an HI was looking at a family member who looked like they were just pure energy, glowing, swirling light but still a body shape/form. And my next favorite is "looking" around and seeing inside my hubby. As I was falling asleep, I listened in and heard an argument, I thought it was from me(HI), but when I focused in on myself I got silence, so I scanned the room for the disturbance, and focused in on the source; I "saw" several mini-hubbies arguing inside my hubby as he lye beside me, so I tried to focus on what they were saying, It was hard to hear clearly, but there was a heated debate as whether to try to go asleep or get out of bed. I laughed to myself about it, how funny(and seemingly random) HIs can be. Then my avatar pic is inspired from another HI, the pic is similar, but my eyes were open, and my HI was overlayed on reality, I decided to experiment with my HI, so I rubbed one eye, and the HI cracked and one row of flowers changed rotation, I rubbed my other eye, it(the HI) cracked in another location, and rotated counter-clockwise, I watched it for a bit and fell asleep, slightly perplexed.

when I was in my spiritual state, which ive lost atm because I stupidly gave up!

I started to have lots of Lucid Dreams and after a couple of months nearly every night I would get hypnogic imagery I saw my third eye open up which was amazing because just unexplainable colours appeard then I would like go into the future and see drawings like in a plan of UFO-Don't think Alien! lol

then after that my dreams just started getting more and more insane till the point I was getting sleep paralasys all the time and I started being able to force my self into dreams by focusing on dreaming but if I wanted to OBE I would wait for the Vibrations to get really strong! then wait some more, the vibrations would then sooth out and that's when you start floating and going off for an astral projection!! its so damn cool
