I considered responding yesterday, then considered sending a private message, then decided not to. This thought contributed to an unusual dream sequence this morning though, so I'll start with that, even though it goes off topic.
My dreams this morning were a series of false awakenings, during which I was unaware I was still dreaming. I realize this is common for many other people, but it doesn't happen to me. At each step, I was thinking about the previous dream, and how my ability to distinguish between dreaming and being awake had been blocked by my subconscious, without being aware that it was still being blocked. Now, after having gone through several iterations of my attention being drawn to the dream-like quality of my experience, my current state still feels a bit surreal.
On thing I take away from this is a hypothesis about why other people are often unaware they are dreaming. When they become aware that they are dreaming, many people are inclined to take control of the dream and do what they want with it. So if their subconscious has something that it wants to work through in a dream, it has to block that kind of lucidity. As an experiment to consider, if you may be one of those people, you could try making a commitment to yourself before sleep that you're not going to try to drive your dreams this night, then see what happens.
In my dream last night, I 'awoke' with a vague awareness of a girl I had known as an adolescent who had a crush on me for a while. On a whim I thought to myself "maybe I've awoken in a universe where I fucked her". As soon as I thought that, the lighting in my room changed, as if the weather outside had suddenly changed to a different day. (I've had sex with few women in my life, partially because I'm a dork that nobody wants a piece of, and partially because I've been unwilling to treat people as playthings. Now that I'm old and married part of me regrets this, even though the adventures I did have previously turned out to be mistakes.) I'm no longer sure of all the steps in the dream sequence or the order, but here are a couple that stand out. I am sitting on a bench and a guy with a colorful parachute lands right in front of me and goes into a building. In another scene I wake up after having fallen asleep on what I had intended to be a short bus ride, and now its hours later and I don't know where I am. The driver is sleeping also, the bus seems to be self-driving. In both cases I'm aware that I was previously dreaming, and am thinking about the previous sequence in anticipation of describing it to somebody. Neither dreams have any obviously 'shared' element to them, though there is a sense of being at university that I don't think is entirely 'mine', and it would not surprise me if someone else dreamed about the parachute scene last night.
I was going to conclude by running through a precognitive and shared dreaming 'best of', just to stay on topic, but I guess I'll just stop there instead.
interesting shadowofwind. thanks for sharing that. interesting to hear you say "maybe i've awoken in a universe where..." as i've often found myself thinking that. i'm still not quite sure what to make of all of it. sometimes i feel very skeptical and then other times i feel like there can be no denial that something real and important has been witnessed and experienced. sometimes i wake up completely blown away at the level of detail presented in these experiences. i often feel very surprised at the scenery and experience as it's nothing that i have thought about before consciously or been thinking about because of tv or reading or anything. these are the moments that i most feel like something important is happening and being shown to me.
Glad you found it worth reading. Just for possible clarification....I have no reason to think that I awoke in a different universe last night. I've had a couple experiences in the past that I found convincing, but they did not occur in dreams.
