Photo Gazing to Dream About Specific People

      Hi,

I've been practicing with ways to dream about a specific person. Mainly because I like to dream of my mother, who passed away.

This is what I've been doing for about 3 months:

I begin WILDs, but stop after the progressive relaxation. What I do next will seem to interrupt the relaxation, but not so much that it's bothersome.

I take a photo (black and white - seems to work better than color photos). The photos I use are small, approximately 2 inches x 2 inches. They are small, in order that my eyes do not have to move around a large surface area to absorb the contents of the image. Also, the photos I use do not contain much background area. Meaning, the person's face in the photo fills the majority of the positive space.

I hold the photo about 12 to 18 inches from my face (sometimes closer) laying on my side so I don't have to hold my arm up - I rest my arm on the bed.

As you know, staring at anything long enough will bring on some form of HI. This is why I initially began this experiment. So, after staring at the photo for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, without allowing my eyes to stray, the photo will appear to "morph." Sometimes, as odd as this sounds, the photo will animate like a movie clip.

When the HI becomes intense, I just close my eyes and move on with WILDs. The gazing gives me a "jumpstart" on HI, so as WILDs "re-begins," I'm in full HI very quickly. So far, I've managed to dream about whom I want with consistency. Though I've only tried this with 2 people thus far.

Interesting.. I assume you do this after 6 hours sleep or so (as usually done) ?
I wonder if this technique might be useful for continuing a dream. Draw the dream on a small piece of paper as best as possible, and use this technique on it.
Not sure if it would work as I expect though - the dream would probably have a different feel to it.

Thanks for that though - I'm sure it can help someone wanting to do this.
Anyone keen to try it ?(besides me when I get a chance)

That's an interesting idea - drawing a dream character or scene. If not for the fact I can't draw a stick figure to save my life, I'd try it

I should add that it took me several attempts before I attained HI with a photo. It wasn't until I used a black and white - and changed the size to small - that it began having an effect.

Actually, I rarely use the WBTB method with WILDs. For the photo technique, I've practiced during the mid-afternoon with results.

Actually it's a very similar idea to a VILD.
Perhaps drawing your dream sign, and using that as a method to get lucid could work quite well?

      [EDIT]
I just posted in 'What can u do to increase errotic dreams?' that this method may actually work for encouraging dream themes too (eg sexual ones)

That is very interesting, because so far there are only two successful dreamsigns that have let me known I was dreaming and one was coming in contact with a dead person (which I have on several occasions in my dreams, so much so that I always instantly know it's a dream when she appears) so if I use a picture in a WILD or even VILD technique since I'm not quite up to WILDs yet it would probably increase my lucid count.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

This sounds like a great idea. I think I might try it to see if I can dream about my grandfather on my mom's side, who passed away 10 years before my birth, and I have always wanted to meet him. Or maybe my mom's grandmother, who passed when I was 2. I heard both of them were great people.

Your Photo-Gazing Technique is really very interresting since it is some form of Dream Incubation. You insert ''someone'' into your dream.
The idea of DRAWING dreamscenes or characters you wish to incubate into your dream would be a great thing.

Now I almost DRAW as much as I breathe, yep I'm a Pencil Junkie I draw alot of LD and Broadened Awareness-themed drawings.

You have brought me on an awesome idea. I will draw small images of scenes and characters and I'll try the gazing technique on them. And REALLY trying to ''place'' myself in the scenery as I look at it. To see it as a real place and imagining clouds flying over and walking there so that when i close my eyes I can really relive the scene in my head so my HI will pick it up. If this will have any success on me remains yet to be seen. but I'll defenitely be drawing handy things ( YOU ARE DREAMING-signs), nice scenes and characters I want to incubate in my dreams.

PS: The HI technique you were after at first is also very interresting: Activating your HI while still awake: many people will have experienced it but are unaware of it.
Does this Ring a bell for anyone?:
You lay in Bed, tired and in complete darkness, just enough moonlight to see the walls and ceiling of your room. And you stare in the darkest shady corner of your room and you gaze into it. After a short while I will always find the black ''spot'' of shade expanding out of the corner and ''guzzling up'' all surrounding light eventually totally blackening my vision while my eyes are wide open. It's like Watching without Seeing anything.
These tricks your own imagination play on your eyes are the same that cause Hallucinations and Optical Illusions I believe...very interresting since it is always active. Also in waking life all day.

Great Idea. I have seen photos morph like that while trying to fall a sleep at my sisters house. We were sleeping in the living room and she had all these pictures up. I had to ask my wife if she saw it too. I thought I was losing it .

Do you ever try that while falling a sleep for the first time at night? I dont do the WBTB method very well and I dont get very many chances for afternoon naps. What would be the difference between naps and first falling asleep at night?

Man I just love ''losing it'' . Basically you don't really lose it but you experience altered perception. Sleep is a very good Hypnotiser. When one is very very tired and sleep deprived due to months of Insomnia ( Unluckily like Me -_- ) these Hypnagogic Hallucinations actually seem to appear more and more during waking life, Especially before bedtime, when I'm very very tired yet still inable to sleep ( Insomnia is Hell I'm telling you ) However I find this most amusing and awesomely Interresting. How altered perception can toy with your eyes and ears. By many people this is simply reffered to as ''insanity''. Well even if it was, which it is not, it is a very pleasant insanity. Yeah I'm pretty much a dreaming person all the time so if Hypnagogic Hallucinations manifest themselves outside dreams in waking life I only enjoy it and take the time to conciously observe it.

Now I haven't tried the gazing technique yet. But I shall have to draw a desirable dreamscene and see if I could Incubate this scene into my dreams using the gazing technique.

Sounds like an excellent idea. Maybe I can introduce my favorite character at will with this method. I'll have to see.
