      Sleep Paralysis technique question.

Hey, I have a question to induce sleep paralysis. I'm about to go to bed and I read somewhere to induce sleep paralysis, just lie very still. Is this true, or do I have to go through the whole process of setting my alarm... staying up for a while.. etc etc. Or is there another easy way to lucid dream tonight?

Also, would FILD work at all?

Do you wanna induce sleep paralysis or a lucid dream?

Because if lucid dream, sleep paralysis has nothing to do with inducing LDs. You will be in SP anyway once you start dreaming. But by then you will hopefully also be in a dream and lucid. Here is a great WILD tutorial if you want to WILD WILD

But if you are just starting out oh your LDing adventure, I recommend to start with DILD (RCs+mantras) http://www.dreamviews.com/induction-methods-techniques/ and here http://www.dreamviews.com/dild/13212...ods-dilds.html

      Happy dreams

I don't mean to be rude but, are you sure you mean sleep paralysis? Usually that is associated with having very scary dreams. I used to have chronic sleep paralysis issues, had horrible nightmares that went along with them that someone/something evil was sitting on my chest and I couldn't move. I really don't recommend it.

Like gab said, sleep paralysis has nothing to do with lucid dreaming.

      Agreed, SkyeLovelock

Mhm, I think I should have added this.

SP is a big misunderstanding. Sure, there is SP and we all get it AFTER we start dreaming. We are paralyzed so we don't act out our dreams.

But when a lucid dreamer asks about SP, they generally mean sensations we can notice when we are falling asleep while keeping awareness. Those could be vibrations, movement... and many other. Those are signs of normall falling asleep process which we normally don't notice when we are not WILDing.

So for purpose of lucid dreaming, forget about SP. Just follow some tutorials we have here and have fun dreaming!

I see, my apologizes. I've never heard that term to explain those falling asleep sensations before. Thank you for explaining, gab.

Oh no! No need to apologise. You were right in both, I only added some more info.

True SP is when we start dreaming, our body is paralyzed so we don't act out our dreams. Actually then it's called REM atonia. But when something goes wrong and the paralysis kicks in before we start dreaming or it doesn't shut down on time when we wake up, it's called SP. And since we can't move at that time, it comes with all kinds of bad experiences. Such as seeing or hearing scary things. But if we know about this possibility, we can prepare and it will not be scary then.

But again, this has nothing to do with inducing LDs.

Both of you guys seem to know your way around lucid dreaming, but guys, I love EVERY aspect of lucid dreaming. Alot of people tell me "Oh I don't recommend it, because it's scary." The thing is, even if it doesn't get me to lucid dream or even dream normally, I still want to do it. I want to be scared, because I'm one of those daredevil people that like to experience scary stuff no matter what. But it is also a gateway to extraordinary dreams. It is because of the hypnagogia that forms up a dream, whereas you'll probably take note of your sleep paralysis and realize that you're dreaming. Sleep paralysis can help ALOT to lucid dream, and it's even better for me cause I want to get scared. ;3 And plus, if you actually were in your sleep paralysis and were lead into a nightmare associated with it, hopefully you will remember and realize it's all just a dream, so you could easily just chop up the scary phantoms and set yourself in an awesome mansion. XD

Anyways, thank you both for your answers.

There is a difference between scary and true, lifethreatening terror.

HH can get scary and even exhilarating. SP terror is uncontrolable fear for your life.

This reminds me of the debate about someone wanting to induce nightmares. Because of misunderstanding the difference between scary, adventurous, exhilarating dream situations in which you may be in danger, but you can use your wits and powers to save yourself and be a hero. After these you wake up and you feel energized and have a good feeling.

And between terror that you can not control. There is not much thinking involved other than primal fear from death. From these you wake up gasping for air, your heart in your throat and you are rushing to put the lights on. May be scared to go back to sleep for a few minutes or hours.

But HH can be scary and fun at the same time. That really depends on an individual. For example I never got a scary HH because I really love them all. Even a sound of chain saw coming closer and stopping by my ear. On the other hand I did have a true SP twice. Both times I was scared out of my mind. I don't think it's the things we see or hear during SP that makes them scary. But some kind of a primordial mechanism.

And once more, SP is not a part of lucid dreaming. It's pretty much impossible to induce. If we feel it, it's a disorder. By the time we may feel it, and only way to know is to try to move, by then we are already in a dream and lucid.

I just don't want this to become another "LD via SP" thread. Because people just starting out don't need any confusion about this SP that some mistakenly claim to be a step in inducing a LD.

This became a problem when SP was put in a same bag as HH, while they are something completely different.

This post is not entirely in response to your's, DreamDesire, and I hope you will not take it personally.

Don't worry, I barely take anything that's fun personally. But there's also a difference between scary and scary but hilarious. From everybody's view, they have different associations with sleep paralysis. For some people, they're paranoid of it and will forever be terrified. But for me, I'm just a hyper guy that wants to do anything I can to get scared or not. I guarantee you that even if I can't breathe and I get scared, I'll finally be like, "YES I DID IT!" You see, I've never had sleep paralysis, at least not in a long time. I used to be scared out of my mind, but now that I realize that nothing can actually hurt me, nothing can actually make me paranoid having to do with sleep paralysis. Sure, I will probably wake up from a nightmare and be extremely mind-boggled by the horror I experienced, but a few minutes I just try to poke fun at it and write it in my dream journal, realizing the amazing experience I had that might be something that some people would YEARN for. Hypnagogic Hallucinations never seem to scare me anymore now, since usually I just imagine them having the face of the guy that goes "WHY ARE YOU RUNNING? WHY ARE YOU RUNNING?" XD. Sorry if I come off as some guy that tries to act cool that seems to have no fears, but truly I'm just an insane person looking for adventure. Sleep paralysis isn't fear to me, neither are hallucinations or nightmares. To me, they are a mystical adventure through the great kingdom that is your mind.

Sure, I understand. I personally love all my HH for the same reason. It's something new and strange and crazy.

But since now it's clear we are not really talking about LDing technique, do you mind if I move this from LDing section into Beyond dreaming?

I have reached paralysis but then never managed to start a dream. It isn't the least bit scary if you know how to break out. Once paralyzed you can't move like a shoulder or arm or hip or leg etc. However, you can easily break out by just trying to barely move a finger. To properly WILD this way you should likely get like 5 hrs of sleep then wake up, and then remain still. When you are paralyzed you also shouldn't be scared because besides being able to break out with finger (toe) tiny movements you can control you breathing. So just focus on that, speed up the breathing, slow down etc. As for starting the dream I wouldn't know, I always decide to see how much I can move my finger before breaking out. "Oops, less than that I guess!" I think to myself as I break out he he
Sure LUCID DREAMS are all fun and games until someone loses a third eye.
