waking up 3 times a night

How long am I going to keep waking up three times a night? I just started a dream journal, 11 days ago, every since I have woke up three times every night. Its starting to drive me crazy. I stay awake for 45 min - 1 houre, from Threeish to fourish. Why does my mind wake up after every dream now, and how can I stop this?

I've had similar problems. Every fifth day or so, you will be really tired and sleep right through the night, probably. Don't drink too much water, that can wake you.

You mentioned you wake up after dreams, so do I. I don't know what to tell you other than to just deal with it. I guess you could stop paying attention to your dreams, but I'm not sure that's what you want to do.

Its probably out of excitement of the ability you've found, but theres nothing really wrong with staying awake (other than the aggrevation of sitting there out of boredom), as long as it doesnt affect your daily waking life. Try reading a book, or listen to music to get back to sleep. I have slept an average of 4hours a night since middle school (10+ years). Just try and find another way of getting your energy for the day; meditation, nature, etc. As an insomniac, I have found outside energies to be a great help in sustaining me in my waking hours and possibly a cause for my insomnia but I would have it no other way. I get some of my best thinking done, and music made during the night when everyone is asleep, not to mention my best dreams come out of sheer fatigue sometimes.

Anyway, weigh the pluses and the minuses, if you feel waking up 3times a night is overall not worth having the ability to recall your dreams then stop your dream journal. If you feel this new world you have opened up is a fun an interesting one continue your journal and hope you eventually fall back to sleep easier (which Im sure will happen). Its up to you what you value, more important

Try learning to put yourself to sleep. If you're relatively tired, you can use various techniques to quiet your mind and body. The biggest thing is to relax your muscles; because as long as they stay tense you will feel restless and be unable to go to sleep.

If you can observe your body and mind while you're going to sleep, you've got halfway there already... but it takes practice.

f your dream is lucid, you could probably tell yourself to just fade out of it rather than waking. I've not tried this yet, because I would rather write down the dream than sleep more and run the risk of forgetting it; but it should work.

      interrupted sleep

I agree that you are waking up because you have just begun dream journalling and you are concious to the fact that if you don't wake up after each dream you run the risk of fogetting them altogether. You should practice re-entering your dreams quickly (make short, unedited journal entries...don't proofread....just the main points) as the same consiousness that signals you to wake and record in your journal will need practice to guide you back into the dream world.

I have a similar problem as does my twin sister, where we sleep so lightly, we wake up dozens of times in the night. This means MAJORLY disrupted sleep. I'm often tired during the day and need to work in active jobs just to stay awake all day. The only plus is that I have learned LD and dream control and can re-enter quickly back into dream mode. I am wondering about the fact that I do this so often throughout the night (and through a sleep study learned that I go into REM sleep in 30-120 seconds, instead of 1 hourish +) and so I rarely go through the normal 5 stages to get to sleep.

This sleep pattern has seriously affected my life and my daily energy levels. Does anyone have any insight or similar experiences?

I know that this site provides info for people trying to dream....dreaming is the easy part for me, it's staying awake that is the problem.

      help.

Hmm, not sure if this belongs in the "beyond dreaming" section...

But, how long are you writing in your journal for the time you're up? When I keep a journal for more than a week straight, I often stay up a half hour to an hour just writing down my dreams! They end up becoming so long and detailed...

There's no question for me that getting up in the middle of the night to write is the hardest part about all of this. Losing sleep is a necessity, but what is gained always makes up for it.

Yep, like Nine says - what you lose in sleep will be made up for by your results.
I usually just take down key points, perhaps no more than 5 mins of writing at the points in which i wake up. Then i usually sit down for a hour in the morning to review on what i have dreamt.
In response to when you will stop waking up 3 times a night, You should be able to get back into your normal sleep pattern after your excitement calms.

Maybe this thought will help. Remember, when you wake up in the middle of the night, it is much easier to WILD. I've started doing that again.
