In my experience, it's possible to simultaneously believe you're dreaming and not dreaming in a dream. As impossible as it sounds, that happened to me once.

Well, REM periods are "supposed" to only last 30-45 minutes max, so you're bound to wake up eventually... hopefully.

      Hmm, wonder if I'm dreaming...

Put a sign beside your bed that says, "Are you dreaming? Do a reality check!" get in the habit of looking at it every time you get up and going a reality check, different each time (so you don't expect to do the same results each time, therefore failing when it actually happens) that way when it appears in your FA you can do an RC and realise you're dreaming.

blah, reality checks never help. i mean, i'm already in that mindset of always questioning reality, so reality checks are sort of redundant.

Well, I guess this isn't helpful to others, but I have a way of causing what feels like an adrenaline relase in my body. That wakes me right up in a dream.
Perhaps try to simulate how it feels to panic in a nightmare, or the sensation from a rollercoaster. Concentrate and imagine feeling like that.

I Think you are doing reality checks wrong. Recognize that your dream is a dream and then you will be able to get out it. I think a recurring dream is the easiest to become lucid in...

hey man, i duno, ive been stuck here my whole damn life

although recently ive found a focusing tool where i put myself in a trance and i can review over my thoughts and experiences and i can feel my emotional state and the emotional state of others... and time slows down a little bit (or my perception just speeds up, not sure)

either way, it seems to be expanding my consciousness into my actual dream state

but i will point out this dream doesn't work the way our dreams at night work, this one works on spiritual'ness rather than pure thought..... which for some reason makes me think my dream world is more real than the outside world... boundaries limit consciousness and consciousness is bored by the boundaries it set up for itself to view reality from a different perspective?

      so it seems

      Good luck sir
      Why?

      Other suggestions for waking up
      - Verbal commands. Scream 'WAKE UP!' loudly.
      - Force yourself to read something complicated, or do a complex math equation. If you can wake up all of your consciousness, you'll wake up.

As for being lucid - the fact that you KNOW you are dreaming means you're lucid. That's all it is. So perhaps the other posters are right - you aren't doing reality checks properly.
Usually the act of checking is enough, but I've had occasions where I needed strong confirmation.

Once you get to the point of controlling the dream, make things easier for you to believe.
For example, if you want to fly, then use the jetpack around the corner or in the box behind you. When you're in the air, you can remind yourself that it's just psychosomatic and you can throw it away. This is called a 'shortcut'
Always summon things where you can't see them, for greater chance of success.
And make reasons for things to work. Then simply expect them to work. Don't dwell on why it might not work or how silly it is - this will undo it all, and possibly make things worse.
Just expect. It will happen if you just shut up and believe it

      Press Alt+F4.

Nah, not really As a kid I once just said: Wake up, wake up, wake up! And focus and I woke up. Otherwise try to go to sleep in a dream? Kind of hard when you are chased by raping lizardmen however.

Alright this is what I do when I'm scared in a nightmare and I'm too stupid not to make it a good dream.

      1) I close my eyes
      2) I think of alot of things at once, like too much stuff going on in your head
      3) Believe and expect to wake up
      4) You're awake lol

It works 95% of the time for me. I'm not sure thats how I do it but I believe that's what I do. Anyway hope this works.

      waking up

what i do to wake up myself out of dreams is to simply visualize my dream ending, and me opening my eyes and waking up.

another thing i do, is waking myself up out of the dream, i visualize myself being "pulled" out of my dream back to real life. sometimes this just changes your dream to all white, a blank place thats no where, then i do that technique again and i wake up.

either way, just practice with trying to end your dreams.

lol i had a lucid dream once where i was driving a truck, and drove 50 mph into the side of a building, and i woke up. basically, i killed myself in my dream and the force of that (i felt the "pressure" of me hitting the wall, but there was no pain) destroyed my dream body which destroyed my dream. i think LaBerge said something about dreams revolving around your dream self, and that if something happens to your dream self, it affects the projection of the dream. so then, if you destroy/kill your dream self, your dream should end. either that, or you'll be taken to a dream version of an afterlife lol. i know that from experience...

What i say may help or not...I hope it does. When i first started LDing when I was young I use to test me dream state. I use to force myself to get up and walk around. It is a hard thing to do. Even dreaming you will hit the floor rolling out of bed and it is three times as hard to get up. Get up, walk around and explore. Don't just lay there or you may loss out. You may have touched a great LD minute. What is the worst that could happen? You are awake?

Oh god... I actually just posted in a different thread about the exact same thing. I feel like there is more for me to do in this dream though and that I'm not supposed to wake up until I've done whatever it is... It's like my subconscious or someone or something created a play I'm supposed to play out... And I lost the script. (even had thoughts comes to me of another person in my mind writing a play with me...)

e: On second (or rather something thousandth) thought I'm probably just crazy and imbalanced... Doesn't make it seem any less real though.

I'll probably sound completely crazy for saying this but I needed to share somewhere...

On Christmas Eve I told myself, with no prior thought or reason to really do so, that I was going to have a lucid dream right before going to bed, having never tried before. *Immediately after I did that I said "No I'm not..." and fell asleep. *Anyway, I didn't think about that again until I left to go back to school and I at some point remembered I had said that, and some things started to make sense. *Anyway, I spent some time meditating in this meadow next to the dorms (something I've never really practiced at all) and it a point where the whole world just started revolving around me... I got scared, not thinking about it possibly being a dream, and told whatever it was (my subconcious?) that I didn't want to be in control, and told it to take control. *Anyway, that incident scared me a lot and I ended up withdrawing from school and moving home, where things still get stranger... Without giving any specific examples it seems as if my senses are really all coming out of me rather than coming in through my eyes... for example, everything looked like it was in technicolor for awhile and I told myself time travel was possible for awhile and during that time I would have black and white flashes sometimes... Plus some of the things that happened at school sort of happened inversely here at home... Basically my point is it seems like I'm stuck in a parallel dimension where I feel like a ghost and just not knowing if I'm awake or asleep is confusing. *To add to it, last night one of my family cats was in my room and I could almost control how she acted by wishing for it... some times it seemed like she was teleporting or something... I sound completely crazy but while all of this is happening I'm still just living my life, it's just pretty scary any enough things have happened to make me doubt that the reality I'm in is real at all. *It seems like I was sucked into the movie It's A Wonderful Life or something a lot of the time. *Spirit of Christmas or something, I don't know... *A lot of the time it seems as if some game was set up for me and I forgot the rules.

A few strange things I can think of that were strange would be feeling breezes in my room while I concentrate on, cloud watching and seeing actual images similar related to my thoughts appear (like really appear), and while there are a lot of other things (stranger than I've mentioned but I'd rather not get into it) when my mom picked me up from school the night I meditated I said with full confidence that I thought this was all a lucid dream and she replied that she suspected as much... *The fact that my computer works fine boggled my mind for awhile after reading about electronics not working right, but I recall my computer's passwords and stuff not working right during the end of december and me having to sort of feel my way into making it work right again... I don't know...

Anyway, any comments would be nice... *Regardless this experience has made me incredibly interested in dreams.

Edit: It sort of seems like what happened is that if this is a dream I some how gave up control of my dream to the dream and I've been working on regaining it. *Oh, and I fell in love two days before the dream and mentioned I would have a lucid dream "with you" when I went to bed... on my sister's bed. *And since then me and my younger sister have had incredibly strange connections that change depending on wether or not I'm comfortable with them, like having conversations in our heads with each other. *We even acknowledged it. *When I brought up that I thought this was a dream to her she mentioned that I just had to accept it as real... *I'm just sort of rambling at this point but another strange thing is that I've been able to look straight into the sun without my eyes hurting, look away... and have my vision just return to normal almost immediately and if anything my vision is better than I remember it being several months ago.[/b]

whoamg, didn't expect this thread would get so many replies. thanks. that Willow person seems to understand what i mean the most.

i've never really taken life seriously. my attitude toward life is that it's just a dream or a game. but it sucks when you can see the game youre playing but still have to play by the rules. to paraphrase from Waking Life, i'm not living, i'm asleep in life's waiting room.

so what do i do? i'm thinking about giving up this whole sleep thing. really. as far as i can tell its the only thing that would make any difference in my awareness. i've had problems geting to sleep my whole life, especially in the past few months. i don't even fall asleep... i sort of go to bed and lie there for half an hour until my body passes out because of boredom. i wake up feeling dull, groggy and unrested even after sleeping ten hours. the most i've stayed awake is three days in a row, and on the third day i felt absolutely fine. in fact, i feel better with lack of sleep. my senses are more acute, i feel a little more alive. makes me wonder how long i could go without sleep, and what would happen.

actually ive had this idea for a while now, but the problem is i just get so damn bored at 4 AM. then i talk myself out of the entire thing. and even though i lie for half an hour awake, i'm too stubborn to just get up. its an endless cycle.

Sounds like we're experiencing the exact same thing to me. In my case the first few days after I said I was going to have a lucid dream I found myself listening to the lyrics of a lot of music, waking up at night with songs stuck in my head... Listening to this music again and really paying attention to the lyrics has made a lot of sense to me too. At some point in December I woke up and listened to the songs I Don't Love Anyone and Mary Jo by Belle & Sebastian. Now to me this seems to make a lot of sense in retrospect by looking at the lyrics for the two songs (here and here). Every line in those two songs applies to my situation... The second song might as well be about me over the past two months.

it sounds like you guys might be suffering from some sort of mental disorder and might want to see a counselor. it will help and you can know what's wrong with you. and whether or not you believe it, and i'm not shoving my religion in you face, but there is a God out there who loves you, and Jesus is holding your hand through all of this. Good Luck
