      Advantages to sleep deprivation

Although it does not work well with Lucid dreaming . I have pondreded over my expieriances I have had when deprived of sleep.
1.Hynogogic imagery- Who are familiar with this, it seems to bring on more vivid images before going to sleep. (Problem -staying awake long enough to get anything out of it)
2.The few OBE's I have had have been in association with a lack of sleep.

      3. An altered perception of thoughts and reality .( without drugs) Which can be helpful for looking at the other side of things.

4.Damn does it feel good to finally go to sleep

I always have major sleep deprivation. Usually, I have been caught awake at 4 in the morning. Next day, when I have to wake up at 8:15, I walk into school trying to figure the heck out why the walls are melting.

It is not a nice feeling, trying to work like it. You just..want to fall asleep, no matter what the consequences are.

An experiment was carried out where somebody wasn't allowed to sleep for a week or so. After 3 days, they became paranoid and thought the two scientists were trying to kill him. When he had a good nights sleep, the scientists woke him up and gave him some tea and breakfast nicely. He wondered how he could of ever thought of them trying to kill him.

Lack of sleep does funny things, but only if you have a MAJOR lack of it.

I'm in a constant state of sleep deprivation. You think I'd have a rem rebound or something... but no such luck.

Actually I've had pretty bad issues with sleep over the past few years. I usually get 4-5 hours of sleep a night but at least once a week will be awake for up to forty hours before sleeping. I don't have any odd side effects other than being more proned to irritation once in a while, this is just how my body works naturally. I have noticed that this is actually when my creativity is at its peak, especially as far as comedic aspects are concerned. I have noticed that sometimes when I have been up for the longest is when I tend to sleep more deeply more quickly, especially knowing that my natural clock will only let me get limited sleep, and therefore hit REM much more quickly.

i sleep every other night, as some of you know...its fun...fun sleep-deprivation game: drink 2x the normal amount of nyquil, then try to remain awake as long as possible...try not sitting or laying down...if you're standing its harder to fall asleep...eventually you start to dream while awake...its really cool, and probably totally bad for you

i havent slept 4 comiing up 2 50hrs now, dreaming when awake is cool but confusing. my mind kind of like has full dreams whilst awake but without any images - its wierd when ppl try and speak to u and ask u sometihng when this is going on, im thinking that im doing something or somewhere im not and responding to them they have no idea idea what im on about and their questions get worked into these little dreams. its far too weird 2 explain properly (well i cant).
Im a bit like WindowsXP, I can sort of multi-task but every now and then I crash.

Are you serious? Do you sleep every other night?

If you had a chioce to hibernate or sleep every night (or every other as some would prefer) Which would you choose?
I wonder how long a Lucid dream could be then?

I went 48 hours once without sleeping.

Result: I didn't have dreams for a week! I think my brain shut down completely.

I think the lack of sleep and then finally getting some really good sleep will increase your chances of lucidity. Just a thought.

      deprived

I used to do sleep deprivation experiments in high school. I made it to 65 hrs straight once. I was an emotional wreck at around 60. The first thing I usually notice is that sound gets twisted. Then it becomes very easy to tune the real world out. I space out a lot when I'm sleep deprived. Like, not neccessarily thinking about anything even. Just spacing. I do also find creativity to be at a peak in earlier stages. But at some point, the brain kinda goes on meltdown mode and turns to slush. The hardest thing to do is to keep busy enough. After a while, reading is pretty much out of the question. Then even watching tv and movies becomes too tough. Here's an interesting thought for you to ponder. If we had, say, 3 suns in our system that were evenly spaced so that there was always light on our planet -- do you think we would evolve to never sleep? I notice that it's much easier to stay awake during daylight hours than night when sleep deprived. Even with lots of atrificial light.
Just a friendly reminder to do a reality check. : ) Are you dreaming? How do you know?

That's an intresting question 42. I always wondered about the purpose of sleep. I mean I think that there is a good chance that humans would not need sleep.

But then again almost all mammals need sleep and rest of some kind. (Kind of wish I was an ant or something)

That sheds a lot of light on this religion ive been reading about. Apparently some primitive civilisation (i cant remember their name) use to take their initiates into the woods (in a cabin) and for 7 days straight they just ring bells, no sleep at all. They go into the woods afterwards and if the initiate can hear the wood spirits he graduates, if he dosnt they start again. Now im not suprised the poor guys would be hallucinating stuff.

Oh yeah, fight club!!! I guess Edward Norton found advantages in not sleeping, by destroying the corporate world

I'm doing a variation of the polyphasic sleep schedule, sleeping about 3 hours a day spread throughout the hours in the form of naps. I actually find that I've been lucid dreaming a whole lot more on this schedule but it could be because I wake up more and dreams are more easily remembered if you wake up after your REM cycle.

haha, robotrip! I have done that twice... drink a 1/4th of a bottle of robotussin will make you trip if you don't throw it up first. very very bad for your body but hey, it's quite an experience.

I have noticed that when someone is sleep deprived (4- hours of sleep per night) that when they try to sleep, they often get sleep paralysis. I am not entirely certain of all the 'benefits' of sleep paralysis are, but I know that some people use this to initiate an OBE.

      3 suns.

someone earlier in this thread asked that if it was always light outside, do you think humans would evolve to not need sleep?

My un-professional answer to that is, no. We would still need sleep. Sleeing gives our brain time to go to work processing learning and memory without sensory input distracting it. Dreaming is thought to have evoloved to help us deal with our emotional lives, a system that is deeply more complex in humans than any other species.
      - what they can never know is what we do to them in our minds -

      - the premise that led to the war on terror is a lie -

Not to mention there are places on Earth that can see sunlight for months at a time. I don't believe that there sleep patterns are differant or are beginning to differ from ours.

Isnt bad sleep deprivation bad for blood pressure? and other stuff like that?

I wouldnt reccoment it for teens maybe it might interfere with growing if done all the time.

I agree. I am sure it is not good for you but as you said exisdence "if done all the time". But to expieriment with it on an occasion from time to time might be a learning expieriance.

i think sleeping evolved over time. cave men had no artificial light so they couldn't so anything during the night so they did nothing at night, which eventually lead to sleep. if cave men had artificial light they probably would not have slept. we would not sleep nowadays but we have been doing it for so long that it is essential in our everday lives. but im glad cave man had nothing better to do because now we can have LD's.
