well our dreaming self is, in my opinion, our "true" self or our true desires... for example, i'm not the wild type, but i am outgoing. in dreams though, i am very outgoing and blend easily with everything that is going on around me. also in non-lucid dreams, since everyone believes that it is real life, they will be acting as though it is real life in the dream. with the exception of those who act crazy always in their dreams, which is most likely how they act in real life, or how they would like to act.
but i dont think anything "takes over" the body per say, i think its more psychological because it may be your unconcsious mind controlling your body when you get drunk ect. and to me that would explain why there is a feeling of being on auto-pilot; since that person is not conscious, their unconscious mind is controlling their body for them.
and also, i think our unconscoius mind is what controls our non-lucid dreams, so if there comes a point in real life where our unconscious mind is in control (drunk, not ourselves ect) then it would be acting on desire, rather than thinking of embarresment, or safety as much. if we think about how people act when they are drunk, sometimes they mistake someone for someone else, and that might be because they desire to see a particular person. like, they say someones name because it looks like its them, when its really not. something like that.
