      Humans and cats alike?

ok, I'm a 4th year biology student, and the other day, my vertebrate zoology prof said something interesting. He said that cats are the only animal on the planet that dream (besides us). Apparently they are the only other species that "dream" like we do, they have very deep sleep like humans. So your dog running in the air on his back- isn't dreaming. I found this very surprising. Now, I'm not sure what this means, but it makes you think. Like if you think back to the Egyptians that treated cats like gods, I wonder if its related... probably isn't but, just felt like sharing this and to see if anybody else had heard of this before.

Thats what I thought too, my prof could always just be full of it. But he did seem pretty sure of what he was saying. Maybe he's up to date on something that's not part of manestream science yet?

Dogs dream for sure. My friend has a dog and they can tell what he's dreaming about by how he moves. For instance, it's obvious when he dreams of catching a frisby. It's funny to watch actually.

I'm sorry, but I think your professor is wrong. There is no reason a cat should be able to dream, and a dog, or any other mammal besides a human cannot. I would be interested to hear his logic behind that statement.

I don't think I'd believe a word he says about anything else. I think you should drop that class.

actually, there was a study done on cats showing that when cats jerk in their sleep - as if they were chasing a dream mouse - they aren't actually dreaming. It's just a day dream of chasing something, they aren't in deep sleep or REM.

however, cats do reach REM and when they do they look dead. motionless and still, just like a person sleeping. The sleep paralysis preventing them from acting out a chase. So when a dog is kicking about in his sleep, he might not be in a deep stage of sleep like REM. But a lighter stage of sleep like day dreaming.

considering that most mammals are on the alert even when asleep, sleeping like a human is costly and can be dangerous

Interesting. I thought that their sleep paralysis just didn't work as well or something, that's why they twitched so much. They really look like they're asleep then; and it's kind of hard to imagine a cat having a day dream, but if they did the brain-wave thing, I guess they know. I'll have to watch mine's eyes when they look like really deeply asleep.

      Oscillations?

Both EEG (in cats and humans) as well as single-unit recordings (in cats) show synchronization in the gamma frequency band (broadly 30-70 Hz) during both REM sleep and waking. Hobson interprets these oscillations as a reflection of our cognitive processing during dreams and during the awake state .

      Hmmmm

      Sweet dreams.

Dogs dream, my dog i had always made weird sounds like wimpering, growling, crying, etc and moved body parts while the eyes you could see were in REM sleep. Then again she could have had these violent looking/sounding dreams because she was hit by a car when she was 2 and got brain damage from it.
