Sure, by realizing you are in a dream, you could summon a dead person, however... There are many opinions on the validity of the person's identity.
Personally, I say that dreams are your mind. Anything that happens is because of something in your mind, so their spirit cannot directly communicate with you. Of course, I do believe that through your interactions with these dead people (when they were alive), you could accurately project how they should behave. Perhaps your mind may piece together some advice they gave you in a way that is meaningful. Although I don't believe you can connect with their current spirit, I do think that the experience with their image (projected by your memories of them) could be enlightening. In other words, seeing them in your dreams, although they are not really there, may help you understand the legacy and wisdom they left behind by resorting the memories they gave.
Other people will ramble about Astral bodies and ghosts and different realms and other pseudo-scientific, borderline religious spiritual new age junk. You may choose to believe whatever you wish, even if your choice omits all logic and sense...
Well, I partially believe in all the spiritual new age junk, but your conclusion seems much more possible. Either way, whichever is actually happening I'd tell myself it was him... much more comforting. Besides if it was just my mind that made the body, then my mind can tell its self the body was really his spirit.

I once met my stepfather's mother and grandmother (who both has passed away) in a lucid dream. In fact, they were the reason I became lucid. I thought "Hey! You're not supposed to be here, you're dead... I'm dreaming!" :dreaming: So I started talking to them, thinking I might sort out some unsettled issues with them or whatever. Even though I knew that they were just figments of my subconcious :hrm:
But if I was talking to their actual spirits, that would be awesome :cooler:
Once my little sister (when she was like 3) recognized a picture of my great-uncle who died before she was born. When my mother asked where she knew him from, she says "He comes to play ball with me in my room sometimes with grandpa". We were never really close to him so I doubt she ever heard his name mentioned in conversation or associated with a different picture or something. (its possible I suppose, but unlikely). It still gives me chills thinking about that, but just something to think about in favor of the existance of ghosts or the deceased in dreams.
I actually myself believe in neither and figure there has to be some explanation, but I try to keep an open mind :)
I had a lucid dream recently that was triggered by speaking to my dead grandmother. I remembered in the dream that she was recently deceased and that was my reality check. I still hung out with her for a bit though and said all the things I wish I had a chance to before she died. I will never know if she heard me :) but it gave me a little bit of closure.
I believe in SOME of the "spiritual new age junk." :D I believe in souls/ghosts. I also believe that the souls of my dead family, friends, pets, etc come to visit occasionally. I know that a lot of people look at such belief as illogical and crazy. I know it IS illogical, but I'm not willing to ignore the experiences I have had or the value of those experiences. Earlier this year I had surgery under general anesthesia, where the doctors knock you out. I had always heard that people don't dream during anesthesia. But it turns out you can dream once your body starts to come out of it. In the recovery room I had a dream where I talked to my recently deceased Granny. She had died about three weeks before. I was so surprised to see her (and thought it was impossible to dream under anesthesia) so I thought I had died!:eek: But I was just having an LD. We talked a little and she asked me about my health. Then I woke up.
As to techniques for causing an LD where you dream about a dead loved one, I would just suggest to try summoning the person you want to talk to when you realize you are dreaming. Whether this will be their soul you talk to or just a memory of them, I can't say. But when comparing an LD to prayer, I think the message could get through to them.
The thing is, you could always try asking them if they are genuine dead relatives or not.. I've done this a few times, and they've always answered "no", and that they are DCs doing a bit of impersonating.
