I'd say the best way to define it, I think, is that your consciousness leaves your body and can explore the Astral world. It's mostly the same as the waking world except you percieve things you can while awake. Think like sound waves. Just as some sounds are beyond human hearing, some things are beyond human perception. Going Astral helps you percieve them. Does that make sense?

I had friend who used it to explore haunted places, find out the nature of the entity and either reassure or warn the residents.

I induce it by becoming still, relaxing, and waiting until I get a flying sensation. Don't be forceful or you'll lose it.

Astral Dynamics , by Robert Bruce may be an excellent place to start.

I think its quite possable that people mistake LDing for APing.
Meaning that they are actually LDing instead of APing.
