electronic pulses of energy coming from the pineal
I think the main idea linking 3rd eye meditation and the pineal gland is light.
I read somewhere that the pineal gland senses light, and with 3rd eye meditation bright light is seen.
Blarg blarg.
Eos: can you tell the difference between openning of the Third Eye, disfunctional flow of Kundalini or having an astral parasite?
People, read, please. It's obvious that at least most of you just don't know what you are talking about. Doing unknown practices without a guide, from suspected sources, without a good reason to do it... It's just asking for trouble.
This thing about hallucinogens being the only way to open the Third Eye is just wrong and proves nothing except deep, psychological drug addiction. I've a good deal of my own experiences, both drug induced and non-drug induced and I'm sure that those second yield long-term results instead of those first.
Okay. Although I'm fairly certain the pineal gland doesn't sense light, I know that it does have cells that are similar to light receptive cells. I don't really take issue with the pineal being related to the third eye (aside from the fact that there is no real evidence other than that the endocrine system seems to line up with the positions of the chakras), what I take issue with is focusing on the middle of the forehead in order to produce a sense of pressure somehow being connected to the pineal gland. This relates to my much earlier statement that one can focus on any part of the body during meditation and produce a sense of pressure; it isn't significant.
Some people in this thread are reacting to me as if I'm a trolling skeptic and that I don't know what I'm talking about; I do. I have studied third eye meditation (specifically trataka), and imagining a sensation in the middle of the forehead isn't part of it.
There is some controversy about the localization of the Third Eye. Physical plane and other, subtle planes are not the same things, so Ajna isn't pineal gland. The other issue is if Ajna is inside your head or on the forehead. This picture should make it clear:

I believe it worked for me. Although I'd attribute that to the serious emotional and mental strain I put myself though *massive facepalm* with hallucinations where I believed I was seconds from death. Needless to say, since then I've stayed well away from that particular substance.
