      The Shadows

This may seem odd (maybe not) but when I have tried lucid dreaming, other people show up (usually in child form). When I ask them who they are they say that they are "the shadows". To make a long story short, they act like omnicient observers of our dreams and make sure we don't step out of bounds. Was my mind making this up or has anyone else had this experience? Sounds screwy, I know, but it was strange and made me think. They usually appear when I try to do something over the top, like go into a friends dream, and then tell me I'm not ready yet.

I have never had this experience before personally. However, I would recommend that you try and get to the bottom of it in order to be able to move along. Ask them who they are, why they are there, what they represent, etc. Basically, converse with them and try to connect with them and ask them for help or wisdom or whatever you need to actually be able to do what you want to do (enter friends dreams or such). I think that whether they be representations of your subconscious or whatever, it is still worth a try to dialogue with them and find out what they have to say....
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

      I second that

I feel that they are just figments of imagination, however it is still important to deal with them.
Nightmares and paranoias are also 'just figments of imagination', but they hold you back

So talk to them, and see what they say, IMO

      Shadow People

Wow you post reminded me of a dream I had a really long time ago as a teenager. In the dream I was being chased by a shadow of a man. As I was running away I looked back in horrible fear and saw him jumping the fence behind me to keep chasing me. I was so scared I scared myself into a lucid state and woke myself up.

As I became lucid I had the understanding I had come into a part of the dreams worlds where I wasn't sapposed to be. Wow you post recalled a nightmare long gone and almost forgotten. I'm sure the shadow probably symbolizes some sort of negative energy brought about our fears.

My mom, brother and a girlfriend of mine all have dreamt with shadows chasing them at one time or another. When I heard they had similar dreams it made me feel better as a common nightmare symbol and since then stopped dreaming it. Why I felt better about them dreaming with it I don't know.

      Peace :-)
