    1. Reflections, Glitches, and Fixes

      by , 04-01-2015 at 02:32 PM
Morning of April 1, 2015. Wednesday.

My dream starts with continuing concerns and focused computer-related ideas from my waking life, though I am not lucid at all. It concerns one of the real and weirder flaws in the Internet, primarily Google in this case, which astoundingly, no one at all seems to have noticed over the years. It concerns some sort of inversion glitch, whereby what you search for displays the opposite data depending on how it is done, with incomplete listings. For example, Google will claim that, for a particular newspaper, certain editions are not available and with access to the ones that are. I took screenshots of this since I doubt most people would even be capable of believing this. If you go into the same archive with a different method (or link), the opposite of what was previously claimed (in every case) will result. This remains in my mind just prior to sleep for a few reasons; one reason being that I had forgotten the exact method to reverse the inversion error to the opposite listing and one method was no longer viable; the other reason being that it is hard for me to believe so many thousands of people are so lacking in awareness over such a long time. However, the newspaper archive itself is much a mess, with random pages of newspapers within other editions and wrong dates often being listed. Still, with close attention, it is useful for my research and dream work documentation to a point (relative to my earlier childhood work).

Later on in my dream, an unknown female from the department of education visits us. The house seems completely unfamiliar though is possibly some sort of composite with rotated room layouts. I go into the room where my computer is and notice that it had seemingly been left on apparently overnight. Its appearance is quite different and it is a desktop rather than a tower. The front of it is some sort of transparent corrugated-like reflective surface which seems to light up (from the inside) with orange bars if it is on. A bright green light also supposedly indicates it is on (as in reality, though it is smaller and square and higher up - on my real tower it is near the bottom). However, after looking more closely, the power light is never actually on. The appearance of the light being on has to do with where I am looking at it from a particular area of the room. Regardless of the brighter light, walking about into different areas seems to make it go on and off, but what I learn is happening is solely related to reflections from another light source, possibly outside sunlight (though I am not sure). This scene is very vivid and rather strange because it really does seem like the power light is on at times. After playing with this apparent illusion for a fair amount of time, I leave the room.

The female from the department of education has my form templates and some apparent worksheets but when I go to look at them, it turns out to be a clothing catalog (with a few smaller pages within the normal-sized pages, one featuring a girl playing on a swing in blue jeans). Not all of the pages make sense as it is. Because I “must” use this as part of the education progress report, I contemplate how I am going to arrange certain sentences and such between different scenes that feature different clothing, some outside.

Soon after this, a rear column for the (fictional) canopy that for some reason is over the sofa she is sitting on starts to buckle. I go to check what is wrong, but she gets up out of concern for heavy weight falling on her due to some books and board games on the top of the canopy as well as some on a higher shelf on the wall (though I believe someone else warns her about it, possibly my youngest or second-youngest son). I notice fancy curtains hanging from the canopy (like on a canopy bed) and hanging down (but tied back to each column, looking rather regal) at the sides and front of the couch. Looking closely, I see that the column, which is mainly a hollow plastic beige cylinder, is both warped (as they are in reality in almost every cheaper bookshelf) mostly at the top and becoming smaller, tapering off to about half the diameter and oddly bent near the end for a short distance. The column is so warped, a part near the top is almost L-shaped, yet I still somehow manage to fit it back into the underside circular recess of the canopy (which would be impossible unless I somehow bent it back - yet it somehow seems to work as is regardless). By that point however, my two youngest sons are climbing over the couch and are taking down heavier books and board games to lessen the overall weight even though it is probably safer for now.
    2. Sorting

      by , 01-12-2015 at 05:35 PM
Morning of January 12, 2015. Monday.

This dream was of not much interest to me. I am still “going back to King Street” after over twenty years. It is always different, however. This time, my apartment (or the pinhead’s apartment I may be visiting at the time) is near the space which the large bathroom was in reality but farther southward. The pinhead (Leonard S) is present and mostly stands to my left without doing or saying much and there is seemingly not much furniture in the large room.

The activity is somewhat unclear - though it is related to an apparently important task involving sorting. There are several low stacks of folded newspapers (from different time periods, possibly relative to a ten year time period) over the floor in at least six or more piles to my right and at least four or more to my left. It is possible that they are only about two or three newspapers high or there may in fact be only one newspaper in each position. I am aware that there are many more newspapers to go through in whatever activity I am involved in. My landlady (who lived to be over a hundred in real life) comes in, seemingly slightly annoyed, but I do not think I am doing anything wrong.

It is possible that I am involved in scanning all of the pages or certain features of them - such as the comics only (or at least sorting them more precisely somehow, though by what relevance I am not certain), but if so, it seems I am doing it mentally - yet still possibly sending it to a computer file somewhere (apparently to save space). I notice that some top pages are showing typical clusters of paragraphs related to actual news (with some black and white photographs here and there) and other top pages are mostly showing columns of daily comic strips (I notice a “Wizard of Id” strip featuring Spook, the hairy dungeon prisoner). This is in about a fifty-fifty proportion overall. Not much else happens. The floor remains covered with newspapers as my dream loses cohesion.

    3. Dream Meanings in Full: Flipping Over a Strange Pill

      by , 06-12-1976 at 12:12 PM
Morning of June 12, 1976. Saturday.

At the beginning of my dream, I find myself walking north on a known back road between Arcadia and my home in Cubitis. It seems I am returning home from somewhere, possibly school, although it is the weekend in reality. (My dream self often does not know what year it is let alone the day, though walking home here symbolizes my imminent return to consciousness). It is possibly late morning or early afternoon. The weeds on each side of the road are higher and denser than in reality. The road seems older or less-maintained (which may be an indicator of the presence of prescient threads, of which there are two known of in this dream). I am walking on the right side of the road, close to the roadside.

Stepping out from the roadside and from my right is a hippie (at least two years older than me, possibly about seventeen) with long blond hair. He is apparently selling GRIT newspapers. He seems like an unlikely older hippie version of my otherwise soft-spoken friend Johnny C—-y, but the hair color is wrong. He is otherwise unknown.

Even though he is selling GRIT newspapers, he also seems to be selling illicit drugs (a very rare dream scenario). He offers me a free sample pill called “Snakeskin” (which I first also but only vaguely consider is a reference to American dollar bills, followed by vaguely considering if the pill is actually made of skin from a snake), which is a large green oval tablet. For some reason, I take it (which is something I never would have done in real life).

As I continue to walk along, I have a strange feeling of being pulled into the air and thrown to the opposite side of the road, which causes me to wake with an unusual but vague sense of motion sickness, though it is very brief.

Familiar dream state components and meanings:

RAS symbolism: A snake often serves as the main trigger of RAS and is likely the oldest biologically (and probably serves as such in the dreams of all primates, including lemurs, lorises, monkeys, apes, and man). Here however, the association is with its skin, for the subliminal realization of the shedding of it as releasing the fictional dream self to return to the conscious self identity. The pill, as an emergent consciousness precursor (in contrast to the alternate choice of reading the newspaper), symbolizes the shift in consciousness that occurs with waking. My dream self however, seems to subliminally perceive it as reinduction potential (though just as in waking life, some pills are known to bring one closer to unconsciousness, while this dream ultimately utilizes the opposite inference regardless of how my dream self views it).

Vestibular system symbolism: The rising upwards and flipping backwards to the other side of the road is the resolving of ambiguous vestibular system dynamics in rising from unconsciousness. This is the same waking symbolism as in dreams such as “The Pole Vault Event” from 1970, though in that one, the dynamics were transmuted to another dream character.

Premonitory hypnopompic precursor: My entire dream seems based on potential control (though based on passive choice in this case) of the waking transition and the nature of RAS. This is because I had continuously been working with dreams in this way since I was around eight years old (to induce apex lucidity). However, prescience always has curious potential despite the dream type or its core symbolism and inherent meaning. In fact, prescience seems far more likely to stem from known core symbolism, which has always puzzled me.

Personified preconscious: Newspaper boy. The personified preconscious is rendered for waking mediation of a softer transition than “raw” RAS, though often with conflict if there is real environmental noise (and a need to wake and identity it) or biological need (for example, a need to use the bathroom, drink water, or change sleeping position).

Emergent consciousness factor: The newspapers and the pill, relative to apparent choice. The role of the preconscious here is in making me aware of thinking skills (reading) that are only viable when conscious. Additionally, it introduces the choice of exiting my dream with vestibular system consolidation (the pill), of which I subliminally associate with flight and thus prefer in this case over the softer choice (though which sometimes becomes abstract and annoying since printed text is difficult to understand or stabilize in many states of unconsciousness).

Prescient threads: A boy (unknown to me) selling GRIT approached my mother after this dream. She purchased the newspaper for about a year and a half prior to our move back to Wisconsin. Additionally, I needed to take both penicillin pills and painkillers after the surgery on my right thumb about two months after this dream. (I had never taken pills on any regular basis before.) The prescient nature of the latter seems to be validated by the preconscious in this case having similarities (in appearance only) to my real-life friend Johnny. Although the pills in this dream are presumably illicit, Johnny had told me a few times in real life that he wanted to be a doctor after finishing high school.

Real-life influence seems to have come from a GRIT advertisement, though with altered associations.

Additional notes: In this dream, the original vague association of “Snakeskin” being a reference to money was probably based on the altered association with the GRIT advertisement. The waking symbolism is oriented to my right as is most often the case. The preconscious is rendered to my right as the newspaper boy, who steps out from the weeds from my right. This seems mainly due to sleeping on my left side (as real environmental factors are more intrusive upon my right side, which is more exposed to the real environment I am sleeping in, and its ambiance - whereas unconscious factors, even when personified, are typically oriented on my left). In contrast, flying and being suddenly aware of the left side of my body (on the left side of the road) is the final waking dynamic, as it correlates exactly with my real physical orientation and sleeping position.
