So you're saying it was a certain kind of mental tension, not relaxation, that helped your recall on that occasion? That is very interesting... worth experimenting with to try to develop the technique!

To date, relaxation has worked best for me (sometimes I get a burst of dream memories unexpectedly when I'm in the shower) and when I try too hard to remember I tend to feel like a dog chasing its tail. But maybe if we can learn to flex just the right mental muscles... it would be fantastic to have a technique like that.

Good job bringing those memories back! Love your thoughts on the process of recall and experiences during the day.

About a month ago, something similar happened to me. I woke up with absolutely zero recall, and contrary to other times I couldn't reach for anything - no image, no feeling nothing. It was one of the days for the DV competition, so I needed to recall something to get points, so on this occasion, instead of relaxing, I tensed up mentally. I wish I had taken more notes then about the process. And suddenly the images started coming. But this is not all that happened. This extraordinary amount of effort in that morning had repercussions the entire day. I was getting dream flashes and memory flashes throughout the day. It was amazing.

Alas, I was not able to recreate the precise procedure - the particular effort I exterted then. But hopefully one day will do it again and explore those memories.

I'm definitely planning on trying again, with variations on bedtime, dosage, and when I drink it. Last night I mixed a tablespoon of the powder in eight ounces of cold water and put it in my fridge to play with. I tried mixing just one ounce of that solution into a mug of chai and even that was enough to feel mild effects. One of the more noticeable effects with this microdose was that my breathing became slower and deeper, in the same way that it does when I'm meditating regularly (which I haven't done in a few months). I definitely dreamed all night, but again it was most day residue with poor recall. I'm just hoping the latter is not a consequence of the kava!

Interesting experiment. Perhaps isolate the Kava alone and try for a more normal bed time unless this is normal for you. Maybe try Kava as a WBTB supplement only? I'm super interested in new herbs. Are you planning to try again?

Thanks! I haven't been able to stop thinking about this dream because it turned out so different from my usual LDs. I would love to gather enough material from dreaming to write fiction based on some of these encounters, but unfortunately my waking mind isn't much good at making things up... so unless I can dream the whole thing I'm stuck!

Fantastic dream, Verre! Felt like I was reading the first chapter of a really awesome book.

Great dream control and amazing recall!

And those elves are really evasive but what an adventure!

Oh wow, that was very interesting to read! It really is interesting how the subconscious can just come up with something like that. I once had a lucid dream while sick and I had to wake up from it because I couldn't breathe (I had a blocked nose).

I would love to find a way to write dream-inspired fiction but I'm not good at thinking up plots, and the dreams rarely have all the necessary moving parts (like beginning, middle, end) of a proper story!

I don't recall the specific words now although I could hear them clearly at the time. I recall how spontaneous and random the conversation seemed, with no relationship I could discern to day residue, my own memories, or even the earlier dream. I listened carefully to try to figure out what was going on. A younger girl who sounded like a teenager was arguing with an older woman about something she wanted to do. At first I assumed it was her mother but then decided it must be a caretaker after she called her "Nanny" at one point. I was not involved in the scenario, I was just listening in the dark.
Yes Verre, It appears we're experiencing the same thing, and we're able to able to interact in a dream state without vision. Cool! This means there's something else to do while waiting for the dream to start. More opportunity for enjoyment.

That was a great read, you're a really good writer!
      Do you write professionally?

Aliens, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Mass Effect 3, I like your style

I have no idea why I dreamed this. I'm well aware of NKT and the whole Dorje Shugden controversy, but it doesn't have much personal relevance for me. When I woke up I even had to google "Kelsang Gyatso" to see if I'd gotten the name right, and was a bit surprised that I had! And it was amusingly awkward to find myself inadvertantly offending the Dalai Lama.

Cool dream! I like how thought about coming back at the Dalai Lama, but then just accepted it. It made me laugh

Congrats on breaking the dry spell, Verre! Nothing like an undead triceratops to complete the experience.

You're very generous! But I don't want to count it just yet, because then I might lose motivation to keep trying for better results. It's not my fault if the elves are shy (okay, it kind of is, 'cuz they're in my own mind), but I want to meet them, damn it!

Finding specific DCs that I'm looking for has always been my biggest stumbling block in lucid dreaming. I used to make a special point of trying to summon or seek out particular historical figures or movie characters and I can't tell you how many obstacles I've encountered. With the exception of a couple semi-lucid fragments I have yet to succeed in either task, and have racked up a whole lot of failed attempts.

So I'm hoping that the fact that I'm looking in general for "some elves" and not a specific person like Legolas or Orlando Bloom will make this easier... but I can't just let them get away with being invisible!

That "constant vibration" was an illusion, it turned out! Or so I assume from the fact that everything I did in reaction to this "malfunction" (such as removing the device from the pillow and putting it back on my bedside table) turns out to have been part of a false awakening. When I woke up for real it was still in the pillow! So my best assumption is that it worked perfectly, but in the dream my perceptions of the vibrations was "stretched" somehow.

That's a good use for the MotivAider. It's a really solid device. I've had mine for about 7 years, and abused the crap out of it with no issues other than the occasional constant vibration like you had. I'm sure you figured out what caused it already. For mine, if I managed to flip the switch when I bumped into it or something like that, it would go into the settings mode, and a few more bumps later, the vibration intensity setting - where it continually vibrates...

Also, it's interesting how you woke up after asking to be taken to the enchanted forest of dream!

Awesome dream verre! Growing trees around you to get to the forest is cool idea. I wonder if a single tree might be enough for a scene change too, if we get lost in its detail for a moment and allow the dream to change in the meantime.

Also, loved the rl story about your tree.

No idea about the Greek restaurant, though if I had to guess, it might be because on Facebook the other day I read about a friend who was making stuffed grape leaves. It's a weak link, but day residue often seems to recombine in fairly random ways.

I'm a fairly unemotional person in waking life, and it's striking how much that trait even carries over into my dreams, even non-lucid ones, though most people describe that their emotions are more intense in the dream state. I kind of feel like I'm missing out, but at least it's good insulation against nightmares.
