Not my best dream control, but hopefully I can learn from this!

    Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

    Lucid #218: Empty-Handed

I hear my oldest son E calling for me. It feels like it’s very early morning and the sun’s still not up yet. I walk through the dark hallway into his room to find him sitting up in his bed. “Daddy! I’m up!” he announces and hops off of the bed. “I’m going to go tell Mommy.”

I follow him back down the hall, feeling disappointed that the morning’s starting so early and that I missed my chance to have a lucid. As E starts climbing up into bed to shake Wife awake, I’m hit with a huge wave of regret to have missed out on having a lucid dream. I decide to make one last desperate move and try to phase through the wall,
phasing right through and falling into the void.

I’m floating through the darkness now so I just relax, rubbing my hands together and repeatedly muttering to myself that “I’m having a lucid dream...” It takes an uncomfortably long time, but after maybe 30 seconds of this, a bright new scene forms around me.

It’s mid-morning and I’m outside, standing by the exterior of what looks like a movie theater. I look up at the bright sky and notice that the clouds are moving across each other in all kinds of odd, crisscrossing directions. “I like that!” I shout, pointing up to the clouds. “Very nice!” I experimentally drag my right foot along the pavement and it feels like I’m wearing running shoes.

The dream is feeling really stable to me now so I decide that it’s time to summon Dreamer and earn some challenge points. I reach my right hand behind my back and say, “[Dreamer], grab onto my hand!” Nothing at first… then a slight prodding feeling on my hand!

I turn around to find a brown-haired woman in her late 30s, hunched over and poking at my hand with her index finger. (I decide that this is definitely not Dreamer.) She’s up really close, staring at my hand like it’s the strangest thing she’s ever seen. I feel frustrated and annoyed that she’s messing with me while I try to summon. “Cut it out!” I say, and she hurries away.

Something bad has happened to my confidence at this point, though, and I feel this combined surge of self-doubt, disappointment, and anger, and in a few seconds I
    wake up.

Haha. I chuckled up about the woman.

Did you know it was a false awakening, or did you just simply want to do a reality check just to see if it was a dream or not? I would say you were extremely lucky just by phasing through

      Heh, a pain, wasn't she?

The false awakening was quite realistic and I was so wrapped up in the story that I wasn't really questioning things. I had a vague suspicion that something might be off, so I just decided what the hell and went for it. It would have made way more sense to reality check than to go for a phase at that point, but my non-lucid decisions aren't always my best!

      A suggestion for next time:

"Hey Dreamer, you look funny today! Let's go on an adventure!"

Perhaps she would have morphed into me, or at least taken on my persona if you decided that's who she was.

Bad luck this time, but I know you'll get it next time! Don't let this one psych you out, it was a once-off. Your summoning tech is sure-fire!

I completely agree, great advice! Once that negativity, frustration and self-doubt sets in, it makes everything such an uphill climb.

If I had instead been able to channel the situation into a positive, I'm convinced that the nameless DC would have quickly swapped herself out for you. My mistake here was comparing this to my past summons which had given me a DC that was obviously you. You could say I was spoiled!

I should have done it exactly as you suggested. (It's no coincidence that this is the style of dream control you use to get such good results.) Since a lot of lucid dreaming is built off of emotion and instinct, I think it's all about positive thoughts and positive energy! Next time!

Hey, congrats on the ld! That challenge is really working wonders for ld induction.

Though you didn't get Dreamer, you're getting really good with this technique. It was funny to read about the frustrated DC too!

Looking forward to the next one!

Thanks, you're right about the challenge! I think that it helps so much with focusing intent, and that's a big part of lucid dream induction I find.

I appreciate the compliment on the technique since I allowed my confidence and composure to take a blow in this dream, with predictable results. I just have to remember that if I know it'll work, it's going to work! It can't be any other way.

I agree, on the mental front I think this is one of the keys to lucid induction. Even if your brain's in good shape if your mind isn't properly focused and intending that ld, you may not get the desired results. Thinking of excellent intending reminds me of your awesome pre bed mild successes. If our minds could be as focused everytime we drift off to sleep, we'd be dream yogis.

I just have to remember that if I know it'll work, it's going to work! It can't be any other way.
Right! You've done some really fantastic totys with that super attitude of yours. I know you can do it!

A nice string of lucids I see! Congrats CL!! Great patience working out of the void. I have been largely absent lately but trying to be more regular on DV again. Hope to see you around more!

@Nyx - Thanks for reminding me about pre-bed MILD!! I need to re-read those journal entries because I'd love to have another crack at the early LD again. The more chances I give myself to land one, the better!

@fogelbise - Hey, fogelbise, thanks very much! I've noticed you doing a great job helping students in the DILD course -- good work helping raise the next generation! I will need to catch up with your DJ and see how things have been for you lately!

Thank you CL! I do try to help. I have been slacking in my own LD practices though and my frequency is showing that as well. I do have one recent LD at the end of June that I haven't posted yet. I will probably combine it with my next DJ posting.
