    Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

    Lucid #127: Hagia Sophia

I'm touring a new school for my son "E" that's exclusively available to children who lucid dream. E is in his "level 2" class, and his teacher, a short, friendly, gray-haired lady is showing me around the room. It's a large classroom with basic carpeting and lots of little beds and sleeping nooks everywhere. All of the kids are running around, and I remark that if I had the opportunity to just sleep all the time for school, I'd definitely do it. It occurs to me that I might be dreaming right now... and it turns out that I am.

"I'm having a lucid dream right now," I tell the lady, and head for the exit door without waiting for a reply. I phase through the glass to find myself standing by a harbor in the early morning. There are two amphibious helicopters floating idly in the water, pontoons on their skids. I wonder whether this kind of helicopter really exists.

I remember that I want to find the Colosseum, so I start flying to get high above the water. I emerge from a light covering of fog that I hadn't even noticed, finding myself in a landscape of gently rolling hills that are covered with tightly packed buildings. I tell myself that the Colosseum is one of these buildings and that all I have to do is find it. I see a building that catches my eye, but instead of the Colosseum, it's Hagia Sophia.

"I know the Colosseum is here," I say, expecting it to glow (a trick I've used in the past.) "Show me where it is." A small site off to the side of Hagia Sophia starts to glow. It looks too small, but I fly toward it anyway. A sudden gust of wind starts pushing me in the opposite direction and turning me away from the glowing site. I decide that this wind is trying to carry me to the Colosseum so I won't get lost. It turns me all the way around so that I'm looking out over the endless ocean. I'm worried for a second that it's going to leave me facing out to sea, but it dutifully turns me around and starts moving me back toward Hagia Sophia and the glowing spot nearby.

The wind carries me all the way to the spot, and it's nothing more than a tiny plaza with a small raised platform of stone. I land, and when I examine the platform I find a small button with what looks like a glowing, golden bear's paw on it. Okay, hopefully this button will take me there. I press the button, and my vision is covered by a pop-up message like something from a video game.

The message contains two lines of text and I feel really intimidated at the thought of having to remember it. I try to lock the words in place but I feel like every word I'm not looking at is trying to change. Keeping them all steady feels like playing Whac-A-Mole and it's dawning on me that I should stop obsessing about this. As best I can remember the message says: "Use 4 parts of Vendarite to increase strength"

I'm not sure what this means, but I figure that in a lucid dream I can be as strong as I want to be (and have as much "Vendarite" as I like, for that matter), and will the message to close. I feel like something is happening to the plaza and that it's shifting in some way, but the dream soon ends.

In case you have not googled it yet, Vendarite appears to be a valuable mineral that caused the Federation to attack the planet that had lots of Vendarite, and enslave its population, according to the Memory Alpha Star Trek wiki: Vendarite - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki

Nice Hagia Sophia, btw. One of my dream goals is to go to the Taj Mahal in a dream. But I would take the Hagia Sophia instead, that would be fine.

Hey, cool! =D Thanks, JoannaB! It just so happens that I was in a bit of a hurry this morning and only had time to journal, then run. I love that this matches up to something from the (fictional) world. It's interesting, too, because I haven't watched much Star Trek at all so I wonder where I might have picked it up! I guess a random crawl through the internet must have passed it through my vision at some point. Or it's just a cool coincidence.

You know, the Taj Mahal is one of my long-term LD goals as well! My idea is to fly up to one of the minarets and just sit and observe everything for as long as I can. Try doing that in waking life! I'm looking forward to when we make it!

Congrats on yet another amazing ld! Looks like you are going to tour the entire world this year! I love to travel and explore new/old places which is why I like this year's TOTY so much!

The ld school for kids is also very cool! Maybe one day they will offer ld classes in school, telling of the adventures of CL!

Very good idea to make the place glow so that you can find it, and also about using the wind to your advantage. And I absolutely adore the golden bear paw button!

Thanks, Nyx! I'm like you... I love the idea of traveling the world and seeing all of the incredible sights that it has to offer, even if only in a lucid dream. (I mean, I'd love to crawl through the inner passages of the Great Pyramid, but is it more likely that I'm going to physically do this or more likely that I can have a nice LD about it? )

LOL. Hopefully this means that my future entries will demonstrate greater skill or I weep for the future. Seriously, though, wouldn't that be cool?? I got quite a smile out of this after waking up. In the midst of the LD I didn't think about how cool it was for E to be attending a lucid dreaming academy but looking back that's one of the big things I think I'll remember about this dream.

Thanks, glad you like the glow idea! That is one of my old, very reliable tricks. I was doing that pretty early on, just for some reason expecting that whatever I was looking for would glow to signal me how to proceed. I'm sure it's a video game trope of some kind that my mind reworked for its own purposes. =) It's nice because it makes you feel like you're heading in the right direction. And as we know, in dream world this means that you really are heading in the right direction.

Ahhh, you were really close this time! I remember running around on the Hagia Sophia in AC2, the Colosseum was just a short parkour run away. Must have been absolutely stunning. Have you been IRL? And I really like the idea of a physical LD school. And the glow trick! Smart. Next time I'm in a lucid and need to find something, hopefully I'll remember that.

Sweet, I'll have to try out AC2! I only got to play the first one. I have not been there in real life but the pictures of it just floor me.

Yeah, I hope that the glow trick serves you well! It's one of those that has always worked for me if I focus on it. It goes way back close to the beginning of when I was trying to LD. I want to say as early as my 10th or 11th lucid.

Hey, I know you've been jamming on Tomb Raider, so you'll get this analogy, but the Survivor Mode (or whatever pressing "Q" is called) is such a similar effect. Eerily similar, actually!

I think lding about a place can be as good as going there for real. There are many constraints to proper sightseeing, which we don't need to deal with (unless we summon them) in dreams. Also the feeling of excitement is there in both experiences. The great thing about lds is you can go to places that may be hard to reach or no longer exist. A time travel sight-seeing tour that you can do five-fifteen times a month, no tired legs, no reservations and visas needed.

For sure! They are absolutely awesome now and you are gonna keep cumulating great lucid experiences that make all of us smile. In a way kids are already reading a part of this practical book " The adventures of CL", just this is the online version. Haha, I just thought that some ld adventures may have to be edited for younger audiences. Lol! But jokes aside, you never know what kind of syllabus they may have in 20 years, having an ld class would be really cool!

You're right! And it's kinda nice to be able to do the whole thing in perfect safety. Yeah, you have to pay for your menthol, galantamine, and B-vitamins, but I'd say you still can't beat the cost compared to most methods of travel. =)

Have you gotten to do much exploration of the past? My few experiences have been accidental but they were really cool. (Brief, unintended trip to the streets of ancient Rome.)

It would really be something if this were more widely studied, wouldn't it? I'd love to see what serious research scientists might come up with (pharmacologically and otherwise) for helping extend and induce lucid dreams. Maybe the next generation will have some awesome brain magnet helmet thing that you just switch on for an instant jump into a nice LD. =)

Fantasies aside, I hope that the study of lucid dreaming continues to advance! If a guy with my attention span can get into it, there's always hope!

On top of my head - a little bit of Titanic, flying over ancient Rome before it turned into a model, and the streets of that medieval city where I kissed a peasant, which was really cool, the city was very realistic and people were dressed with what looked like medieval clothes.

Also, I've had some interesting non-lds in different times (Egypt in the past, medieval) and a few strange memories that feel like past life but may have been very early childhood dreams (medieval again). I really have to sit down one day and try to remember as many cool dreams as I can (especially the ones that are not in any journal) and then review them pre bed.

Maybe the next generation will have some awesome brain magnet helmet thing that you just switch on for an instant jump into a nice LD. =)
I guess you probably have heard about this from somewhere. They used similar devises to cause people to hallucinate. The short documentaries I have watched used this as evidence against any spiritual experiences people had, saying it was all in their head, caused by the electric/magnetic device. Anyways, this shows that technology may be heading that way. I just don't want it to be patented by google, where they would upload all your dreams to a government server.

There is always hope! What attention span CL? You are doing great! But yeah, I am very impressed how you increased your overall dream recall over time. I think it is because you are a very persistent and dedicated person. If there is a magic formula to ld, it includes these two qualities (and caffeine, of course!)

That school you imagined, would be awesome...if only! Does your son lucid dream, too? Fun, if the whole family does ! I always thought it would be cool just to take a year off of everything and meditate and lucid dream and what would come of that. If the children could all start so early, I wonder what great things might come of that? Vendarite: I have a hard time concentrating and remembering words and messages, too (I once had a dream where an address turned into an ever-changing binary code...couldn't remember it for the life of me!). I have had things glow in a dream, too; but I never thought of using that in a lucid dream, great idea! I have to try that.

I know, I really loved that school idea after I woke up! My son has had very, very occasional lucid dreams, but it's been a couple of months now. When I talked about the concept once to Wife when he was within earshot, he got really interested. His lucids were brief and he mostly played around with his ceiling fan and some of the trees outside in our neighborhood. Kids have that generally higher level of awareness and are a little bit more "open" to the world, I think. I feel like that makes them well-suited for having LDs.

I also love the idea of being able to just focus so intensely like that on LD! Meditation and LD go so thoroughly hand in hand that the level of daytime self-awareness you'd build with frequent meditation would surely carry over to nightly dreams. Hard to slow life down enough to make it happen. Hard not to envy the Tibetan Dream Yogis a bit. =)

I hope that the glow trick works for you! That's one I've used from way back and it's an old favorite. Plus it's just kinda fun.
