This dream is from the morning of 1/1/2014.

    Lucid #178: Syrian Reading

I'm walking through a bookstore when I become lucid. I stand there for a moment, letting DCs pass on both sides of me. A short woman with dark, curly hair approaches me. She's oddly dressed, with huge glasses and a flowy, ankle-length skirt. She seems overjoyed to see me, and we make out for a moment.

There’s a sudden transition and now we’re walking together through the bookstore. She tells me that she’s from Syria and that I have to come back with her to Syria and do something there to help her. This is interesting enough, so I follow along as she leads me down an aisle.

As we walk along, I see a series of books scattered around on the floor. They’re all historical fiction novels with a mustachioed Tom Selleck dressed in World War II garb and standing in various dramatic poses. Each one's different and they're all kind of cool. I think about picking one up but let it go so I can stick with the dream plot she's leading me toward.

We make a right turn and she says that “This is the travel section.” She walks a few more feet, pulls a book from the shelf, and hands it to me. It’s another book about war, something about the history of warfare in the west, and it’s by a man named something like “Bernard Franks”.

I think that this can’t be the right book, but she assures me that this “This is the one we need.” I’m confused by this but before I can think too much, she grabs my hand and starts running back down the aisle. We don’t really get anywhere before
    the dream ends.

Nice pair of lucids CL! Tom Selleck in various dramatic poses, that must have been hilarious! Of course I am imagining silly faces from him at the same time!

Ha ha, thanks fogelbise! Yeah lots of "Tom Selleck looks off into the distance" kind of faces on those. I'm trying to remember whether he was in some World War II movie that I can't remember or where I could have possibly gotten the idea. I can't tell you how long it's been since I saw an episode of Magnum PI!

I haven't been on much lately (super busy with my new business and everyone in the family got sick over the holidays!) but I'm really glad to see that you've been getting lucid this whole time! Looking forward to getting caught up on your DJ!

      Congratulations on the LD Canis.

I guess looking through books could be a good way of gleaning (subconscious) information?

Thanks, Highlander! You know, I bet that they would be! Man, I had a lucid dream last night (not written up yet) where I encountered a very interesting book but didn't pick it up to read through it. Should have, but didn't! That being said, I do tend to suffer from the trouble reading text that so many complain of.

It's awesome going through books in a dream, especially if they are nicely illustrated!

Hey, have you ever been able to flip through a book and read it in depth? That's still not something I've been able to really do without getting a bunch of text-shifting and confusion. I swear that I can do this easily in waking life!

It works better in non-lds. I wonder if our rationality (i.e. trying to reason out the contents perhaps), might be causing additional thoughts and hence the famous text instability? I don't recall reading a book in an ld, but there have been semi-lucid instances where I have skimmed through books, newspapers. Unfortunately, the book I remember reading was a business textbook, and while it made perfect sense, it wasn't something I look forward to reading in my dreams.

Your reading adventures got me so excited, I was close to suggesting this for TOTM. Checked the thread and there are lots of suggestions already so maybe it's not going to be selected. That won't stop me from going for this awesome task! I really want to spend some ld time browsing through books now! Altenative inventions, physics, meta physics, I wonder what my mind will come up with!

That theory makes sense to me! The process of reconciling all of these different expectations leads to shifting images in dreams very often (as the appearances of places and DCs shift here and there) but this kind of morphing would make text super hard to understf and. With images we can much more easily go with the flow.

I've definitely read successfully in NLDs, although sometimes I get confused because the text is "hard to read" and I wonder what's wrong. (Dreamsign!)

Your reading goal sounds awesome! Can you imagine picking up a book of inventions with your name on the cover as the author?
