Terry Pratchett's "Hogfather" on HMC tonight!

At 10:00 PM EST the first part of the movie/miniseries version of Terry Pratchett's Hogfather will be on Hallmark Movie Channel (channel 187 on DishNetwork). Tomorrow night at 8:00 PM EST the whole thing will be on. I still haven't seen it, so I'm excited. I heard it wasn't that good compared to the book, so I've been purposefully holding off on reading the book until I've seen the movie, so I won't be disappointed.

Call me a Discworld geek, but I'm excited to finally be able to watch this. I thought I'd let y'all know in case there was anyone else that hasn't seen it yet and wants to. I know there are quite a few other Pratchett fans around on here.

It was disappointing. Which is a shame, because it does look like some effort was put into it.

Possibly the book created too many expectations. Possibly it simply wasn't very good as an adaptation.

Your thoughts on it, having seen it now?

I'm about to watch the second part tonight. So far, I'd say it's 'decent'. Certain things I like, such as the choice of actor for Mustrum Ridcully; that's exactly who I'd imagined him as, believe it or not. The actor cast for Nobby is just terrible though. He's too obviously human; Nobby has to carry a paper saying he's probably human.

I dunno, I think Ankh-Morpork should be more dark and violent. And Albert is not as I'd imagined him. But Death's domain is perfect. So all in all, it's not bad for a TV adaptation!

I look forward to The Colour of Magic.

This was actually the most terrible piece of TV I'd ever tried to watch ever. Here in the UK it was broadcast at Christmas I think... so incredibly bad.

Since then The Colour of Magic was released and it was incomparably better, although still not that great.

Paul Kidby's illustrations are almost so definitive in how I picture the Discworld that any adaptations on film that deviate from that tend to lose me.

Kidby's Sam Vimes is almost perfectly how I imagine him to be, and it's one of the rare occasions where my vision of what the author writes is almost identical to how the illustrator depicts it.

According to Terry Pratchett, he's always imagined Vimes to look like Pete Postlethwaite (the big-game hunter guide in The Lost World). After reading Night Watch, I think that is a more fitting portrayal than Kidby's more Clint Eastwood/Bruce Willis depiction.

All in all, I was extremely pleased with the acting and the characters in Hogfather. Some of the more atmospheric stuff was off, and there were a few areas that were 'meh', but overall I thought it was quite well-done for a TV adaptation. Death's character was pretty much spot-on, and since he is my favorite character, I was pleased.

I liked the movie. It didn;t quite do the book justice, but it was still a pretty good movie in its own right. some of it, such as the lack of an outdoors to the Tooth Fairy's home, and a few of the characters (Arg! Nobby looks nothing like a monk- dwa- whatever he isn;t), but it was fun to watch. Still waiting for Colour of Magic to air in the U.S.

(on colour of magic: Previews didn;t make it seem very good, but reviews did, and as for the Pete Postlethwaite Vimes, well, that is pretty much how I imagined him since I read 5th Elephant (first book read containing AMCW), Night Watch, then went back and reread earlier AMCW books. (he and detritus were pretty much the only ones I didn;t like the Kidby representations of)
