Hey guys. I am 19 and I live in Washington.

I first learned about Lucid dreaming maybe a year or so ago while browsing the internet. This idea caught my attention immensely, but I would forget about it quite quickly. But for the past 2 or so weeks, I got into it very deeply again.

I started off trying to lucid by doing reality checks and writing down my dreams on my phone. Slowly, I would stop doing reality checks and forget about it. Also with writing down the dreams, I would start to remember A LOT of my dreams and it got tiresome to write so much in the morning, so I lost track doing that.

I started looking into WILD dreaming and got really curious. I found this one page on DreamViews with the "Free-Falling WILD" method. I started trying that for like 3 days or so, but I am horrible with WILD method because I get too excited when I see it starting to work and wake up. I ended up searching DreamViews forum some more and found Sageous's WILD tutorial. I realized after a day or so that its not the right thing for me. So I started reading up on DILD method some more today and I am sure that is what I am going to try to stick with from now on.

But yesterday, 22/01/2013, I had a very short lucid dream for about 20 or so seconds. I don't even know how I realized I was dreaming. Just out of no where, I though "oh I am dreaming". I was on a random street and I started looking at bystanders walking around near me. I noticed that they were normal, but they all had a dull face on, as if they have no emotions. It is something where you have to pay close attention to be able to notice that. I sat there for roughly the 20 seconds before I either woke up or had a dream I don't remember about.

And now for like a couple hours straight, I've been on DreamViews reading up immensely on the DILD method learning about Awareness and figuring out about Reality Checks and writing your dreams and such. I used to do the "poke your finger through your other hand" reality check and I started doing it for like two weeks, but that got no where.

As of now, I am trying to learn about Self Awareness, doing the RC where you look at your hand and see if its normal, seems to be the easiest and least obvious. Lucid dreaming has become a passionate "hobby", per say, of mine now and I really want to stick to it.

Though there are a few questions I have. Firstly, I seem to get too excited when I try to have a Lucid Dream. I never had any lucid dreams before except for this small short one mentioned above. I am worried that I will get too excited in the dream and wake up instantly. I know I am supposed to just stay calm and relax, but this is too exciting. Any remedies to this problem? Is it just something you learn to overcome through time?

Another question, well I forgot it. Two other questions I had actually. (not a good sign, lol).

But yeah, that is my story. What do you guys think? :D

Don't be discouraged with WILDs. It's a wonderfull technique, and as you gain more experience with LDing, I'm sure you will try again and will be very happy with the results.

But for now, I'll be happy to help you with DILDs.

Good job on your first lucid! Congrats!

1. Practice more RCs, at least 2-3. You never know, which one will your mind like and which one will show up in your dream. But without emotions, RCs will not do much good, so you are right to practice awareness.

Collection of techniques for DILD - awareness question +RC. This is a quick awareness training. You should always put emotions into RCs and when you doing awareness.

2. 20 seconds is lot longer than my first LD. Don't worry about waking up. If you worry about it, than you will most likely wake up. It will get better with more experience. You can check out some Stabilization tutorials.

I still wake up sometimes from getting too excited, and to tell you the truth, I love that feeling. But yeah, it will get better.

I am not necessarily discouraged by WILD, I just know that I need much more practice and mind control to accomplish that, so I will leave that for after I master DILD.

When I started doing Reality Checks, I never knew about having to do it with emotion so I never would. Awareness is definitely the path to go.

As for the waking up, I always wondered about trying not to get excited. Getting excited is why it is so exciting, per say.

But I am having trouble reminding myself to do reality checks and such. Are there any techniques to keep yourself doing it or do you just need to be motivated and work hard at it?

I understand, it's not easy to remember RC during day. If you don't mind, I copy this from a recent post of mine. Hope this helps.

You don't have to limit yourself when and how and why you do RC. Best is to use all possible reasons to better your chance that some of them will work.

1. Use an activity reminder - something you do often
- walking through doors
- using restroom
- noticing specific color
- get a phone call
- get a drink
- and anything else you can think of

2. Use a physical reminder - audio or visual
- set your watch to beep every hour
- set your timer
- put some sticky notes all over your place, school books, laptop, door frame, wall above you bed, first thing you see in the morning
- put a rubber band or bracelet on your wrist
- and whatever else you can

All these are just to help you get into habit of RCing. Pretty soon you will find, that you will start RCing even without them. And that's the best way to do it. Spontaneously. Whenever the feeling "OMG, what if this is a dream" strikes you.

3. Dream signs - anything, that occurs often in your dreams AND in your waking life.
You RC on these in WL every time you see it. Then, when they show up in your dream, you are likely to RC there as well.

4. When you notice something strange. It can be strange for real or you just pretend it is. Let's face it, our lives are not that strange, so we have to make up some stuff.
- a classmate shows up when you know he is at home sick
- you thought you still had some beer in your fridge but it's all gone
- it's lunch time, you should be hungry, but you not
- boy/girl that has been ignoring you is suddenly talking to you
- you see or hear anything and you think to yourself "that's strange"

5. At random
-every time you get the sinking/exciting/freeky/exhilarating feeling n your stomach, that what if this was a dream and you didn't notice


Just remember, RC by itself doesn't get you lucid, it only confirms.

Awareness does. The awareness question "what if this is a dream". And being aware of your surroundings, noticing details, changes, patterns, constantly questioning and knowing where you are, how you got there and what you were doing before. Walking through your life as if you were in some video game, where anything can jump out at you at any moment and if you don't notice where you walk, you will miss some cool pickups. Be alert!
