You need to write in your dream journal every day. Even if all you remember is one word or feeling.
If you don't remember anything at all, write "my memory is great and dream recall is getting better every day". Think positively, as if it was already true. If you believe in it, it will happen.
We all wake up at night several times, each time after the REM is over. We just don't really remember that. Just turn to the other side and continue sleeping. But if you think about it, you will start noticing it and that is a great time to get up and write down your dream.
If you wake up too long after the dream ended, you may not remember it.
What I do, is, I drink a little bit of water before bed. That wakes me up in 2-4 hrs to go to the restroom. Most of the time when that happens I remember a dream. I have a paper in pen in bathroom and I write down my dream, or at least a lots of words. Then I have another small drink of water to wake up again in a few hours.
In the morning, I write those dreams in a dream journal.
