Last Night I Learned A Great New Control Method

Ever since I got back into playing Oblivion a week or two ago I though it would be realy cool to have oblivion lucids. I thought it would be cool to cast spells like bound weapons and armor along with unlimited flight. Finaly last night when I got lucid I cast bound weapon and armor and it worked perfectly, normally I can spawn things out of my sight but I havnt been able to will something up right infront of me. Last night the sword magicaly appeared in my hand and armor surrounded my body. I woke up before I was able to try other things but next lucid I think im going to make huge progress with this. I'll post my results. I intend to try the levitation spell and also try summoning a portal to the moon. I think this is going to be my new method of doing anything.

So for anyone who is having trouble controlling their dreams try calling out a spell to do it for you. I do the same hand movement the character does in oblivion.

Pretty simple method. Instead of just trying to will something to happen by thinking about it, its made easier first by saying what you want to happen out loud which I have heard helps a lot but also doing the movement you do in the game to cast a spell.
Even if you havnt played the game just do whatever hand movement you think suits and cast the spell. Using magic to get what you want works well I think because it is magic and if you know it will work it will. Iv had trouble controlling lucids even when I realy know something will happen and it often doesnt, hopefully now try to cast a spell to do something should work flawlessly!

But yeah, in a broader sense it would probably be most effective to use examples from whatever fiction you're most familiar with - your favorite shows, games, movies, novels, etc - as a reference to bring about whatever you're trying to do.

In your case, spells from Oblivion... someone else might be more familiar using The Force Unleashed, or Harry Potter, or whatever.

i'm a noob so i don't know much about lucid dreams but i have been starting to work on it the last month. As you can tell from my avatar, i like oblivion :D and i've been thinking about how cool an oblivion lucid would be ever since i started researching this. please let me know how these go for you.

Yea I nearly got lucid in an oblivion dream a week or two ago but woke up from my flatmates alarm!!! I had nightly oblivion dreams when I was playing like 8-10 hours a day haha but I stopped playing as much and havnt had an oblivion dream since. Didnt manage to get lucid last night though but i'll keep you posted on how my spels turn out!

I think i will try a fallout 3 dream but I doubt I will be able to if I do I probably wont even remember it.

Hey, I had a Lucid after a day of modding oblivion, it was totally unrelated to it. Later in the dream when I wanted to become invisible I cast the charmelon spell on myself and it worked perfectly.....except...the goddam spell icon appeared in my field of view! As long as I was invisible I could see the icon for 'the active effect' - bizzare!

On a side note I found it really hard to 'summon' a dream character of my choosing using the standard techniques (behind a door/round a corner/etc) so in the Construction Set I made a new NPC with the name of the DC I want to summon in my dreams and made a summoning spell for them. After using it in game for a day or two I was able to do it easily in my next lucid. I think by appearing to be 'logical' in a game, the brain has an easyier time of making sense of it during a lucid. However I have also found that Lucid's involving Oblivion seem to turn into normal dreams more easily than most. Maybe my brain decides that im just playing a game and it causes me to loose concentration? I will let you know more of my experiements! Oh...and if you want to try something using oblivion but cant mod it, just PM me, I can whip up a mod no problem! :D

a fallout dream would be scary... oblivion would be much more peaceful.

Well my last lucid was not a fallout dream specifically but it was america after a second civil war that completeley destroyed the nation. So it was from the inside instead of china but still it was a cool enough dream. I didnt do things quite like fallout 3 though. Think free running in one of the deserted towns in fallout 3

After a day of playing Oblivion, I met my DG in a non-lucid and 'quest completed' appeared in my field of vision. :laugh:

Doing this is nothing new. People have suggested shouting out and casting out what you want for years. Hope you can try it again though.

This is yet another example of someone stumbling across archetype control, but failing to see the workings behind their discovery.

While it may be a great personal technique for you, it's not that great for someone who doesn't play that game of much knowledge of fictional spell casting.

Reliable dream control comes from using stable well established personal archetypes. Video games are good for creating these because of their repetitive nature. If you want good dream control, you just have to identify your own personal archetypes. A dragonball fan will have no problem fighting, a harry potter fan will be good with wands. Just isolate stable archetypes from your own personal experience and use those. Your dream control will become a lot more reliable.

On the other hand, if you try using techniques that are unfamiliar to you, you will get unexpected results. This is because you don't have the repetition reinforcing a particular outcome.

But with enough successful repetition, these kinds of techniques can become much more stable. A few of my staple tricks (namely Telekinesis and pulling a sword from my side out of thin air) started out with the minimal and weakest of associations, yet after sufficient use they've become nearly as reliable as my more ingrained archetypes.

True, but that takes up precious dream time to develop. Why waste time fumbling around with something that may or may not work when you can go with something that guarantees success. It doesn't really matter what you use, as long as you know the theory behind why it is or isn't working. Then you can come up with your own techniques on the fly.


On a side note, I've always maintained that the rules of dream control apply to real life. While we're on the subject of archetypal outcomes, I heard on Coast to Coast AM that there was a scientific study that shows that Californian Asians are more likely to die on the fourth day of each month, because the word Four sounds like the word Death in Kantonese and Japanese. Just a case of the power of personal archetypes in action.

so basically, theyre conditioned responses? how would you apply that to say, summoning something, if youve never read/played/watched anything that had summoning in it?

Well, the trick there is increasing your lucid frequency to the point where the amount of dream time it takes is irrelevant. And if someone can't pull that off, building up the proper connections IWL is always an option; one just has to be creative. The pay-off, for me at least, has been more than worth the initial investment, and when something unexpected does occur, it doesn't take much to direct your attention in a way that fixes the issue.

Like you said, if you know the theories behind what you're doing, you're pretty much set. However, I still prefer my style of archetypal control and am willing and able to put in the effort to make a useful technique instantly accessible.

There are lots of ways to get around that, like picking a spot that is likely to contain what you want to summon. For instance, swords are commonly worn on the hip, so jut reaching down to your hip while mentally holding the archetype of a sword in your mind will usually do the trick. Or could start doing sword swing motions. An archetype is nothing but a series of associations, so all you have to do is follow those associations to get to your goal. And it doesnt always have to be a direct association, sometimes it takes a few steps to get what you want.

You're absolutely right of course. Fine tuning archetypes is an important part of control, especially if there are techniques you want to use often.

Something I use that I guess is the same kind of control is I write a story with a character based on myself and in the story I give the character whatever powers I want in my dreams. Then in any lucid dream after writing the story I have the powers that I incorperated into the story. I have written a lot of stories or parts of stories in order to give me an almost unlimited amount of powers.

Oh but I dont have a lot of control over fire, light, wind, earth, or necromancy because those are the powers of my friends characters. bet you cant guess what my power is that they dont have!
