Controlling Dream Characters

I absolutely love lucid dreaming, but I also absolutely hate my Dream Characters. They are so boring. It's honestly at times as if they're just robots or something, typically they express no emotion, and often don't reply to me if I'm trying to communicate with them. When I do get a response from them it's usually me telling them they're not real (slip of the tongue) and them crying or getting all pissed off. When I tell them they're not real, I don't mean to insult them, I want to have lucid DC's. Do any of y'all have dream characters who know they're DC's, if so how did you achieve that? Also, is the behavior of a dream character entirely controlled by my expectations of them, or is there a certain way i should approach them?

I remember telling a DC that they weren't real, and they said "of course I am!". Then I continued to explain how I was currently dreaming and whatever. It was pretty funny; afterwards I left them behind and flew off. I always control dream characters through expectations. Expecting them to brush their hair or look away from you, things like that. Be confident that they'll do whatever you expect them to.

I never thought about choosing a role in a dream to effect how dc's treat you. You could fight them or you could have them back you up in a fight

In most of my LDs that I can remember, when I'm interacting with a DC I find myself trying to convince them they're not real either. lol... They always protest and tell me how they are real . Or I'll be with my dream family, and I'll be telling them how cool that this is a dream and they just blow me off lol...

That's not how my lucid dreams work at all, for me it's all about expectations. Every aspect of a dream has to do with it, actually. I think it's easy to confuse the two. Using expectations involves archetypes. But when expectations fail, archetypes usually explain why.
