i go lucid, and that doesn't over excite me, because i am sort of used to it now...but then i start controlling my dream, acheiving my objective, and then when i've done that, i go a bit crazy...
can anyone give me some tips on remaining calm in a dream, so that i can carry on?
Okay... you get very erratic once you achieved your objective. sounds to me, then, that your objectives have been too easy. Try hitting some curve balls with a little bit of speed on them, and maybe that will keep you a bit longer in the batters box.
I've noticed that many people are treating Lucidity like a parlor game, or worse, like a child's clown party with its balloon animals. It all can be much more mature than that. Think about it. What have you really done that you should be all that excited about? "Control". that is all I hear about. What about "Content"? The True Goal of dreaming is in persuading your Higher Dream Self -- the Creator of the Dreams -- to deliver successive tiers of ascending Content, to raise your Dream Self to higher levels of Spiritual Being. There would be Obstacles and Tests that will be failed the first time, or the first several times, but then the trick is to persuade the Higher Dream Mind to show you hints and to send you Guides. But instead, all of your people are fixated on pulling ballon rabbits out of your... hats.

To get back on the topic, I think that I have one tip for you that I read from this forum.
It's quite simple actually. Just look at the ground(stare) you stand on when you begin to feel too exited and might wake up because of it.
You can eighter stand, or like some people, to sit down on the ground. The main thing seems to be the staring part of the method. I would think that the effect comes from the fact that you just clear your mind and consentrate on the staring and before you know it, you're calm again.
Just don't lay down on the ground. That seems to cause eighter actual awakenings or the false kind. Anyhow, the current 'scene' could be gone because of it.
I hope this helps...
