Unless you're aware enough in your dream, you'll just end up doing reality checks over and over again without actually realizing that you're dreaming. So try to genuinely be aware and skeptical as to whether or not you could be dreaming. I base my awareness on the following, which might help you too - real life feels real, but so do dreams, unless we question them. So what's the real difference between waking life and dreaming if you don't question things?
Since you've clearly realized that you're dreaming before, though, I would say you're on the right track. No matter how long or short the lucidity lasts, it still counts as a lucid dream!
About the roleplaying, yes, it's completely possible. I've been many different characters and people in my dreams. You just have to "know" that you're them, and get into the mindset. When you hold your arm out, expect to see the character of your choice's arm and not yours. That part can take a bit of practice to get right, but it's easy once you get the hang of it.
