      Testing Dream Consistency

Some reality checks (specifically looking at text or numbers and making them change as you look away) are based off of the fact that details in a dream can change when you do not pay attention to them.

This certainly isn't always the case. It is not uncommon in an exceptionally stable dream for the world to seem quite consistent from one moment to the next. Even if you are not directly paying attention to something, you can still know exactly what is there (more or less subconsciously) and when you look back, the area is unchanged.

So here are some dream tasks which range from simple to potentially insane (not necessarily in order because difficulty can be highly subjective). They are not supposed to test dream control in the traditional sense of being able to manipulate the dream. Instead they test your ability to simply leave increasingly complex elements of the dream unchanged. Focus will be critical to all the following tasks:

      1. Look at a clock and read the time (or whatever crazy stuff is on it). Look away, but remember the way the clock looked, then look back to see if it is the same clock you saw moments ago.

      2. Walk into a room. The more cluttered the room is the more difficult this will be. Observe the room carefully and notice all of it's colors, items, and textures. Walk out of the room, then walk back in. If you are successful it will look exactly the same as you remember it.

      3. Play a dream character in a game of chess (or any similar game). Looking away might result in a change in the board so it is critical that you focus on the board at all times. Try not to consciously influence the moves of your opponent.

      4. Solve a rubicks cube. This one will be pretty easy to cheat on. Remember that the whole point is to not simply change the cube's colors so that it is solved, but instead to keep the cube consistent from start to solve and to have the colors move as they do in real life. Bonus points for solving a 7x7x7 :p.

      5. Solve long math problems that you could normally never be able to do in your head. Get a piece of paper and make sure that as you are solving none of the numbers change at all. Have multiplying 4 digit numbers be your goal. If you can (will probably be very difficult) try to remember the numbers and your answer to check in real life. maybe you could just do something like 1234x1234 so that you only really have to remember the answer.

These tasks may be boring compared to normal lucid dreaming tasks, but I am interested in how much consistency a dream can really have and whether or not it is something which can be improved upon with practice. Good luck

That's a great idea. Perhaps the individual's memorization skills factor into the results? I'd love to see this experiment take place.

It should probably be moved to research...

Actually, I have done all but 4, since I can't even do that in waking <.<
My dreams tend to be pretty stable, and I have even read dream books.

Wow, that's awesome, Hukif. You must have incredible dream control/stability.

Something like that, guess it comes naturally. Will try the cubic thing, though.
