Portals and Going to a Familiar Location

One of my dream plans is to go to my mother-in-law's house in Japan and have lunch with her. Today I had two FA MILDs and attempted two different portals. The first portal was my window, and I tried sticking my head through it, but I just "woke up" into another FA. In the second FA I used a door and as I was opening the door, it was like the location was still forming and I could see it through the crack. I thought about going to Japan, and reminded myself, not just Japan, my mother-in-law's house, and tried visualizing it, but the door just led to my hallway. The last time I used this door as a portal, it also led to my hallway, and then I went through the hallway and was able to go to the field I had been aiming to go to to practice flying for the first time and it worked. This time when I ended up in the hallway I remembered I had to go out to the second door to get somewhere but then I just woke up. Any advice about going through portals and summoning locations? This is my first time trying to trigger a location I've been to before (besides my apartment), as opposed to a made up location.

Assume the first door led into a room of her house. Go through and call her name. It does not matter if the new room looked correct, just pretend it does.
